People often use the term “a hechere neshama” complimentary, as in “the person was so great, he has a hechere neshama.” Yet it sounds to me more like an explanation. He was so great because he had a hechere neshama. We mere mortals who have lower neshamos wouldn’t be able to be what he was.

Look at the Sefer Habris who explains in great detail that in order to fight the Yetzer Horah we must have a hechere neshama. He is as great as the neshama can take. When he exhausts it as a tzadik a hechere neshomo is given to him otherwise he can not excel. There are twenty five levels of neshama נפש רוח נשמה חיה יחידה so you can have נפש שבנפש and רוח שבנפש etc. then נפש שברוח etc then נפש שבנשמה etc. similar to sefiras haamer.

Thank you. Who is the sefer habris? Do you mean that everyone starts off with a regular neshama and when they use up its potential they’re given a hechere neshama?
“You can have 25 levels…similar to sefiras haomer.” I always wondered what it means “yesod shebigvura, etc,” and so too I don’t understand it here. Does “nefesh shebeneshama,” for example, mean that the ikar is the neshama but it has a nefesh characteristic as well?

Just an addendum. There are four worlds where each one is more holy. The neshamas each come from higher worlds.
The Sefer Habris is a very interesting sefer written by Rabbi Pinchas Eliyohu from Vilna first published in 1797. It has no table of contents because he wants us to read it in order. The ideas build on each other.
It consists of two parts, Ksav Yosher and Divrei Emes. The first part discusses material sciences on fire, water, wind or air and earth. The second part is metaphysical, spiritual. The neshama discussion is in part 2 statement 1 נפשות ישראל, chapter 3.

Do you have a hechere neshomo like the square root of 2 having an infinte number of digits? See Tosfas Sukkah 8a ‘כל אמתא וכו

Rashi in parshas va’eira says that Moshe and Aharon were equal in righteousness. R’ Moshe Feinstein explains that although Moshe Rabeinu undoubtedly reached higher heights than Aharon, it was because his neshama was naturally more prone to kedusha than was Aharon’s. This seems to be not like what you said.

I don’t know if I have a hechere neshama. I am mortal which by default is finite. My neshama is immortal and I guess infinite (?). 🙂

SRQT2 – Look at the Tiferes Yisroel at the end of Maseches Kidushin about the story of the painter. I don’t know what Reb Moshe means. The only thing I can tell you כל הגדול מחבירו יצרו גדול ממנו. It says by Yosef ויהי כדברה אליו יום יום ולא שמע אליה the more Aishes Potifar talked to convince him, the more he did not listen to her. The Chasan Sofer explains that the yetzer hora operates similarly. Since he has nothing good to sell so he has to talk a lot to convince someone to follow him, whereas the yetzer tov has good merchandise so he does not talk a lot.

A Torah is kosher even if it reverses the order between Moshe V’Aharon.

laskern, the tiferes yisrael is not at all a contradiction to what R’ Moshe says. No one denies that Moshe Rabbeinu definitely worked on himself a tremendous amount. What R’ Moshe says is that his drive/ability to work on himself was stronger than Aharon’s.

SQRT2 – According to the Tiferes Yisroel, Moshe Rabbeinu was destined to be great. So he had a great yetzer hora and thereby having a hechere neshama and which increased his drive/ability to fight it.
