I just read an update from Sanrio (the manufacturers of Hello Kitty) that they meant she doesn’t act like a cat, but she is obviously the personififation ot a cat. Sorry Sam, I guess we’re back where we started 🙂
Does that mean Arthur the aardvark is a person too? I have always been confused by the apparent separate social distinctions between the sentient, bipedal animals and then their nom-sentient housepets of the same species.
In layman’s terms, how come Binky the dog gets to wear people clothes and go to school, while Pal, Arthur’s dog, is treated as a mere housepet?
Bookworm: For the same reason that Mickey Mouse has a friend who’s a dog (Goofy) and owns a pet dog: It’s a mystery!
Although seriously speaking, my guess is that they want to give characters pets, and what else could they do?

Bookworm, if you consider them a lower life form, then they should go down the scale and have plants for pets.
Bookworm: The difference is in that one word “sentience.” If you are sentient, you are a “person.” If you are not sentient, then you are not a “person.”
of course, defining “sentience” is a very….difficult matter. Once of those things where you can point to it and say “that’s sentience!” but giving an actual definition is much harder.
Interesting points, everybody. 🙂 I like your point, my own kind of jew, about sentience. That could very well be the defining factor between Binky and Pal. Binky and HK are, in some way, persons (i.e. sentient beings), while Pal and Charmy Kitty are not.
My next theory is that these are futuristic, mutated beings from the future, descended from humans or perhaps the subject of genetic experiments, trying to imitate the relatively successful culture of the late 20th to early 21st century in hopes that their society will thrive better. 😛

You are forgetting that Pal is a puppy. Always a puppy. Binky is a dog.

Same species as the rest of the family, so she’s not a pet. In the Arthur universe the pet can’t be the same species as the owner.
all my years, i was never able to figure out exactly what arthur is (what kind of animal)
@wannabechasidish – Arthur is an aardvark (aka “ant-eater”). He looked a lot more like the real-life long-snouted creature in the original Arthur books by Mark Brown. I think there’s a story about Arthur getting glasses where he frets about how the glasses will make his snout look long or something like that….
Aardvarks are similar to anteaters.
