Make sure to remove the skins from the chickpeas. It makes the hummus smoother.

My wife makes humus weekly. I’ll see if I can get her recipe and post it for you.

Humus is dark, organic material that forms in soil when plant and animal matter decays. When plants drop leaves, twigs, and other material to the ground, it piles up. This material is called leaf litter.

I’ve tried 2 different homemade hummus recipes, and for the cost of the ingredients, you can buy the factory made for a lot cheaper. And it tastes better. Chummus and challah are two things I leave to the professionals.

    1/4 clove of peeled garlic

    half a lemon; squeezed

    tablespoon of salt

1 standard size pack of dry chickpeas

    black pepper- a couple pinches

    couple pinches of cumin

olive oil- (add based on desired thickness)

    mix

    #1056150

Hummus and challah actually are better and cheaper homemade IMO. Soak the chickpeas overnight with two tablespoons of baking soda and water three inches over the to of the dry chickpeas. In the morning change the water, add salt and pepper to the water, and cook about an hour until soft. Grind with lemon juice, tahini, olive oil, garlic powder, water, some cumin (i like it), parsley flakes, and whatever other spices, until its a bit of a watery consistency. (It will thicken). Adjust the spices as you see fit. If you must buy, (in a way i like commercial better also) sabra is the way to go! Good luck.

Two cans of ready-to-eat chickpeas, two to four tablespoons of tahini (or even more if you like tahini), some salt, a little water, two or three lemons worth of lemon juice, some extra virgin olive oil. Blend and taste. If it needs more lemon or salt, add it and blend again. If it’s too thick, add more water, and if it’s not creamy enough, add more tahini or olive oil. Add any spices that you like, if desired. Cumin and paprika are good choices. You could also add some red bell pepper if you want some extra vitamins, color, and flavor.

Home made chumus is 100% chumus, store made is 16-25% chumus.

goofus, I don’t know about hummus because I’ve only had homemade once, but for sure homemade challah is a lot better than bakery challah. I can’t believe what they charge for a challah! My wife makes a dozen challahs at a cost less than two bakery challahs.

    #1056157

Barlev: what is defined as hummus?

Yehudayona: I’m with you on that one. I’ll do the math:

1 five lb bag flour =$2.89

    3/4 cup sugar =15 cents?

Two tablespoons yeast = 25 cents?

    1 cup oil =65 cents

    6 eggs =85 cents

    Toppings =10 cents

    Aluminum foil = 20 cents

    Gas for oven =$1?

    Yield=6 challos for $6

In the store six challos will cost you twenty dollars.

Yayin, the bought stuff has lots techina in, has preservatives in, and generally isn’t like “the real thing”

    #1056162

If cholent is a mixture of beans potatoes barley and meat, and has to much potatoes and too little meat; you wouldn’t say there’s only 25% cholent, you would day there’s cholent with to little meat. I don’t think its loses the name hummus if there’s too much tahina.

yehudayona and yayin yashan bkli chadash,

When I said cheaper, I was referring to the hummus.

    #1056165

I do apologize. I realized that after rereading your post, right after i posted. I’m sorry. I think homemade hummus is cheaper also, but the cost difference is much less significant, and is arguably not kedai.

<on soapbox> One does not adulterate hummus with avocado any more than one would put broccoli into dough and call it a knish. Hummus does not have avocado, and knishes do not contain anything other than potato or kasha. <off soapbox>

    #1056170

If it has avocado its no longer hummus. I don’t care how great it is. Now that we got the definition clear, it actually sounds pretty good. We’re gonna have to come up with a new name for it, though. Any suggestions?

    guacammus?

    #1056172

I was once in New Hampshire, land of the moose. I didn’t see a single moose, but I did go to an arcade where they had a Whack-a-Moose. That’s what your guacummus reminded me of.

I was not aware New Hampshire was known for it’s moose, btw what is the plural of moose?

    #1056175

Moose, I think. Same thing as deer. And I can tell you why New Hampshire isn’t well known for its moose; cause there are none! I was there. I looked. I can tell you.

    #1056176

I know, if the plural of goose is geese; the plural of moose should be meese. Ah, the secrets of the English language.

The plural of deer isn’t moose.

    #1056178

Correct. The plural of moose is fish. (That was very deep.)

yayin yashan bkli chadash the reason there is no more mooses in New Hampshire is cause the republican got to them first, need I say more…

    #1056180

Rema: i completely missed that. (Aren’t democrats donkeys, if that’s what you’re referring?)

“I was once in New Hampshire, land of the moose.”

That may mean only one moose. Even in a smaller state, that’s a lot of land to find one moose.

yayin yashan bkli chadash no, it’s cause repubs just love Guns and more Guns!!!

    #1056183

It looked like there were more moose on the wack-a-moose than in the state. But everywhere i looked there were moose t shirts, moose memorabilia, and stuffed moose. Maybe they takeh were all shot. An ode to the enduring spirit of the NH moose population, I present you with….. Guacamoose! 🙂

yayin yashan bkli chadash Better yet just kick out all the repubs from New Hampshire, the rule of thumb is for every repub out replace them with 5 mooses, that will show those repubs who they are dealing with!!!

    . . . replace them with 5 mooses . . .

I thought the plural of moose was meese.

Maybe they takeh were all shot.

I didn’t shoot anyone. I don’t even own a gun, much to my chagrin.
