    Ltoeles harabim.

Many people assume that after drinking on either night of Purim they can sleep at night and they will be alcohol-free by the next morning, fit to drive etc.

You are wrong! For each unit of alcohol consumed you must allow an hour for it to leave your blood stream. So 10 units takes 10 hours to leave, 15 units takes 15 hours etc.

Units can be worked out as follows: alcohol % of drink multiplied by volume of drink divided by 1000. So a 12% alcohol 750ml bottle of wine is 9 units. Whiskey 1Lit bottle 40% is 40 units. The average 25ml spirits glass of vodka, brandy or whiskey is 1 unit.

A new report in the UK last week showed the majority of people prosecuted for drink-driving were stopped between 9am and 2pm, not during the night as was previously assumed!

So have a great and SAFE Purim and a great and SAFE Shushan Purim and get your wives to drive you on Shushan Purim also if you drink heavily during the seuda!

Remember the Police have never heard of ad d’lo yoda! And v’nishmartem is as much a chiyuv as chayav inish! A drunk or semi drunk driver has the din of a rodef according to many leading poskim.

A freilichen and safe purim to everyone! If drunk, dont drive but post HERE!

That is religious discrimination. We have a mitzva to get drunk, and also a mitzva to go to shachris.

That is just nonsense. No one “assumes” that they’re not drunk by morning time. Anyone who has actually put down a drink or two “knows” from “experience” that what you’re saying is a load of hogwash.

No scientific experiment can or will prove to me otherwise.

It is b’pheirush halacha that shikruso shel lot is pattur in mitzvos.

It’s also a b’feirushe Gemara in Nazir that Lot was responsible for what happened the second night, since after the first he should have known it could happen again.

uneeq so you are saying that no men you know drive on the morning of shushan purim? Many of them are still over the drink drive limit then (not actually drunk) but still drive. If you think it’s hogwash then test yourself

No, actually the opposite; everyone I know does drive on shushan purim and no one is drunk in the slightest. This may be because its at least 10 hours after their last drink and because they slept it off.

If you think it’s hogwash then test yourself

I have. I never felt drunk in the morning after drinking. In my life. And I used to drink plenty AND often.

Maybe he was responsible for being machshil his daughters.

I certainly hope you’ve never been like Lot when you’re drunk 🙂

and putting yourself into a matzav of onais is very not simple

DY: Mistama that is talking about if you won’t be shikruso shel lot.

In English purim means “lots”. Hence, some think they have to drink like him.

I really cannot believe there are any reliable sources for drinking like him, and at 12 units or more you have joined him.

I think you missed his point. His point is that it’s better not to get drunk at all, even if you are only gonna miss ma’ariv. Yes, once you are drunk, you can be pattur, but it will still be assur for getting drunk lekatchila.

I have heard that the zohar or some kabbalists hold that you should drink till you pass out.

Anyone have the source for this?

The Rema says that in siman 695. He says you should drink until you fall asleep. Apparently, he understands the mechaber to hold that you need to force yourself to stay conscious and keep drinking until you are lo yada.

Lulei d’mistafina, I would say they agree that you should just drink until you pass out.

Yes, that is what we were discussing. Meheicha teisi it is assur to become in the situation of shikroso shel lot and be pattur? DY brought a raiah from that Chayei adom, and I responded that perhaps the chayei adom is talking about that you won’t be shikroso shel lot so you will be chayav but won’t be able to daven.

There is no mitzvah to reach shichruso shel Lot. Chazal gave us a shiur of ad d’lo yada. That is ad d’lo yada between arur mordechai and baruch haman. Those are abstract concepts since none of us know the people in question personally. That level of shikrus comes a lot sooner than ?? ??? ????? ??????.

My son says this is why on Purim people have “lots” to drink ☺

Popa, the difference between them is if you are standing or dancing. According to the Rema as long as you had the Shiur that would put you to sleep you were Yotze. Also, until you fall asleep from it if you’d have to grab one more drink.

PBA: See the Beis Yosef in this Siman. It’s definitely Assur to reach Shichruso Shel Lot.

HaLeiVi: The Rama is only a misconception if you assume he’s actually learning from the Rambam. If he just says to drink a little and gives an Eitzah for when you will be Ad D’lo Yada then people read him correctly.

@ Halevi. According to the Ram”a there is no Shiur of alcohol- which should put you asleep- it’s the Etzem asleep that’s the Kiyum Hamitzvah.

PBA, it is a general shaylah in the poskim about putting yourself in a matzav of ptur. Seem to remember they quote a tshuvas Maharil Diskin that’s ma’arich about it…

If you drink alcohol and then need to take medication later (like a sleeping pill), you may not realize that you need to wait about 8 hours between the two. Although the enclosed pamphlet may say “do not mix with alcohol,” they do not indicate the length of time you need to wait between the two. This information I got from a pharmacist.

I heard once possibly from reb yisroel salanter that the mitzva is to drink and be happy the entire purim but once you are drunk just like a shikkur is patur from all mitzvos you are patur from ad dilo yada also. Does anyone know who says this and where or have the mikor for this?
