Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to stop nail-biting? I’m specifically looking for someone who was a hardcore biter and actually successfully quit. Does anyone here fit that description?

    Wear gloves?

I was successful at quitting but then I relapsed three years later as a result of stress, and I got an awful manicure that caused me to get a lot of hangnails, that is the reason that I don’t like professional manicures.

not yet, but i’ve come a very very long way. I only bite when stressed and distracted now, aka when doing hard hw. I had tried the traditional. Bandaids do work but only if u dont mind walking around with s/t on ur fingers. Even a piece of tape over your nails. For me, the big advance was buying clear polish. It made my nails stronger and if i began biting, i’d only be biting off the polish and it’d also remind me of what i was doing. For me, once my nails got longer, i found it easier to resist cuz they looked good and were also stronger. I still do polish a few days a week. I cant say it always helps, but often does. Also, if i started biting in stress, i’d stop myself after one finger. I find that i mostly only bite my ring finger nails now, which is still an improvement!I’ve heard others suggest once u get ur nails to a basic length, get a manicure, whic will make ur hands look nice n you’ll be less likely to ruin, and if you do, you’ll only ruin the polish. If you have any other ideas, please let me know!

Try having hypnotherapy by a qualified person who is registered. It does help. You will probably need a couple of sessions.

There was a boy in my classs that had a terrible habit of biting his nails/skin all the time. I asked him to sit on his hands, and he completely stopped biting his nails. His parents were very aware of what was happening. (His father was the headteacher in the school!) He stopped completely within a few weeks. His mom sent me in a very nice Thank You present for all the effort!

When I was a kid I bit my nails. I just prayed to stop, and somehow that was enough. Prayer works for everything — spend a minute or two praying a day to stop the habit, and perhaps it will work. We should pray for all our needs, even comparatively trivial things like minor bad habits.

yeah those things never worked for me. Not when i was a thumb sucker, and definitely not for nail-biting. I dont actually touch my nails with my tongue at all.

Actually i think i have a hard time breaking my habit because i pull at my nails stil, though i bite much much less now

Maybe first deal with the stress (biting nails can be a cause of stress.) and then you won’t bite your nails anymore. Just don’t stress over how to end it cuz you’ll just go in circles.

A few things to do. 1. (Without therapy)Be conscious of what you are doing and realize that what you doing is disgusting, would you want your kids to that and especially would you want your friends to see you nail biter.

    2. You have a mouth fetish and give in to stress so start chewing gum, suck on lollipops, drink water, heck even smoke cigarettes if you have to whenever you get the urge to bite. (I don’t condone smoking because of the first rule of how you are being viewed)

    3. Put a rubber band around your wrist and snap it whenever you get the urge to bite your nails.

    4. Keep a nail file and clippers with you so you can keep your nails short.

I stopped by focusing on how disgusting I look when thrusting my fingers into my mouth and contemplating over all of the germs I was ingesting when biting my nails (and causing me to catch virus’s more frequently). Also, there are halachic concerns – may need netilas yadayim afterwards (there is such a shita) and may cause someone’s miscarriage etc.

its a bad habit, but its just that- an ingrained habit. I dont consciously decide to bite my nails. I am very careful to dispose properly, and i wash my hands netilas yadayim after. For me it’s not a mouth fetish, cuz i pull at them more often than bite. Its a finger fetish?

Put a really bitter-tasting edible item on your nails (like lemon juice or hot pepper sauce – caution: do not rub your eyes). It will turn you off, every time you put your fingers to your mouth.

ok, so i bit my nails all my life, and you can only stop it if YOU really want to. also, 2 tips: if you notice for a second that your biting, cut all your nails short. this way, even if that one is gone, there arent any others to bite. then get manicures once a week. i promise it helps. ask them to clean it really well. then there are no sharp edges or anything to bite. i bit my nails for 13 years, and now i have not bitten them for at least 3 years, using this method. good luck!

    #944478

and also, bitter nailpolish doesnt really work, cuz the fact that you cant eat anything without making it taste terrible is a real put off

    #944479

and my nails were so bitten, there were no pinks even. now, you wouldnt even be able to tell

I bit my nails my whole life and stopped about 10 months ago and haven’t bit them since. It was easy for me once I got braces and it got hard to bite my nails and I just bought a nail clipper, and then I quit. Wear a mouth guard or something in your mouth.
