i heard a rumor that mendy’s is closing and essex on coney is coming back. can anyone confirm?

    What is mendy’s?

I remember when I lived in Flatbush, Essex would give you these 6 inch tall sandwiches with about an inch of bread and the rest all meat. I think it was called the Einstein or something where you can choose any two meats. They knew how a deli sandwich was supposed to be.

    Did it close down???

    Kosherman…

Did not hear either of your rumors.

I liked Essex too (and the ORIGINAL – Bernstein’s On Essex, was the best!).

I was at a sheva brachos at Mendy’s a couple of weeks ago, and the food was excellent.

I’ve been to Mendys on 34th several times always good food and service

Now I’m confused. If Mendy’s is on 34th what does this have to do with Essex? That’s on Coney Island.

I can’t believe essex closed down, they had the best stuff. I will always remember you my sandwich. Yes, you will always have a special place near my heart…about 6 inches below it.

Many have tried, but I don’t think anyone will ever top the food quality of the original Bernstein’s on Essex Street in the Lower East Side.

As far as Essex on Coney goes… haven’t heard anything in that regard personally.

For all you young ones who “remember” Essex on Coney, do you have any idea where the name Essex on Coney comes from?

    Let me enlighten you.

In the good old days there was a really good restaurant called Bernstein’s on Essex Street. For those who were zoche to have a Bernstein’s Romanian Pastrami Sandwich with a really, really good pickle on the side, there is NOTHING around today that comes even close.

Hence the name, “Essex On Coney.”

The posters have made me grow very nostalgic for the old “shmulke bernstein”. By the way- not all chareidim ate there as his hechsher was from the O-u (or was it Kof-k?). he had marvelous cold cuts and fantastic chinese food…there were lines on motzei shabbos thill 2 and 3 in the morning…Yup- chaval al de’avdim….and the waiters with their funny chinese hats….they sold out to a chinese group that ran it into the ground…and, to be honest, the lower east side changed dramatically these past years…even orchard sreet is not what it used to be….oh…well….

fyi, even the furnishings essex on coney had were bought from shmulks.

yes, I saw an ad: ‘Steve from Essex – Grand Opening – “Essen New York Deli”‘ .. @ the location of the former Essex, now former Mendy’s. My husband saw the new sign @ their location.
