What if you install K-9 and give someone else the password?

Its a partial solution although I prefer something that will totally block the wifi. However Im not so sure something like that has been created yet.

Some things I found on a Droid Help Site (but you probably looked there):

-Yeah, there’s really no way to do this. Smartphones are meant to access the internet, that’s what they do. You’d have to completely disable the phone to prevent internet access.

-In theory if you had root access, you could rename the tiwlan_drv.ko to say tiwlan_drv.ko.bak and wifi wouldn’t work at all.

Why do people pay all that money for android and iPhones if they don’t want the ability to use the Internet. I understand why the need for filters but by dont you just get a much cheaper flip phone. The whole point of these smart phones is the apps and Internet.

MorahRach and havarka, maybe they bought them cause they need it for buissness but after the Asifas and some soul-searching, they realized that they can do without it. Now, they have the phone with all their contacts, appointments, programs and are familiar with this phone. So you think they should throw out the phone and spend money to buy a new one which tey probably will have to block the internet from anyways (unless they get some old phone that holds 100 contacts and 10 appointments in the whole calender!)

Putting your phone in airplane mode disables wireless connections

NOt necessarily! My mother just got a new phone a few months ago, Verizon flip phone it is not ancient. It is quite nice looking. It does now have browsing capability, she does have email but I know you can disable that!

Certain apps use the internet but don’t use a browser.

Android phones are available for as little as $85, so it shouldn’t be in the same sentence as iphones.

    I don’t have either, BTW.

Why wouldn’t you put iPhones in the same category as an Android?

if an APP uses the internet you need the Wifi or 3G for them to work

An Iphone or Android is useless without Wifi or 3G

the internet is not just about a browser

Hi, of course you can. You have to change the settings of the wifi antenna – just make sure you have a copy of the settings in case you need in the future. If it’s a recent smartphone you have do it for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands. Please go to system/etc/wifi and have a look what’s there, such as nvram_mfg.txt and nvram_net.txt (the exact details depend on what device you have and what android version) That’s where the parameters are, rx and tx power, frequency etc. You can change them or as someone else suggested, rename the files or the whole folder.

I advise after doing that, you manually disable wifi in the phone preferences, because some terminals might attempt anyway to find a lock to the signal and waste battery power.

How do you change the settings of the wifi antenna? Also how would you manually disable wifi in the phone preferences? If you manually disable it, why do you need to change the settings of the wifi antenna? I’ve been trying to block wifi for a while. I downloaded K9 to “blacklist” everything, but apparently you can’t do that on the android. Now I tried another similar site, but I’m having the same problem. If you can help me, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks so much!

COTW, are you unaware of the fact that Chaza”l mandate certain gedarim, do you think for some reason it doesn’t apply to a phone, or do you just think you know better?

Hi, in some phones you can disable wifi in the preferences, but in others, this is not possible. I assume the OP was not able to disable wifi in preferences (or perhaps only had “airplane mode”, which also disables cellphone reception).

I personally don’t particularly like K9. In addition, Android, but also Chrome for Windows and other platforms, will connect directly to the google websites, such as gmail. I once posted a detailed discussion, but moderators deleted it. I don’t mind rewriting what I can remember, but if it’s not suitable for the website, no problem. However it is unadvisable to rely too much on K9. Actually at this point it is unreliable to rely upon any single filter.

A smartphone is, unfortunately, a platform where the user is the product. They need to grab our personal info (you realize our phones knows which time we wake up and which time we fall asleep, whom we call and for how long, the websites we visit, even what we are thinking – we usually write that into google) and they need to push advertising and other unwanted garbage; the aim is to keep our attention focused on the device for most of our waking hours. Of course connectivity is crucial to that “business” model.

The Android (a unix-family operating system) has a filesystem which is hierarchical. The top directory is / (it is also called the root directory) and contains both files and subdirectories. For example typical subdirectories of the directory / are /etc /bin /usr and so on. In turn those contain files and sub-subdirectories. However, in many cellular phones, one can not even see the directory structure, or in other cases, the important files are read-only and can not be modified by the user.

Please be careful with modifications because it’s very possible that the phone will decide to access the internet anyway, except will do that on the cellular network (at your expense).

Please let me know more precisely what you are trying to do, and if I know how, I will tell you. Are you trying to block the web browser? Are you trying to block all connectivity via wifi? Are you wishing to keep some apps connected (such as email) and block others?

If I’m not mistaken, in addition to the initial inflated cost of the smartphone itself, you will get charged a “data” fee every month even if you don’t actually use the Internet. Your contacts can easily be transferred and it’s a minor inconvenience to get used to a new phone in comparison to the money you will save.

I was just trying to make it impossible to connect to wifi. I know one way is to block access to settings. I don’t think there’s another way. Do you know of another way that doesn’t entail blocking access to all of the settings?

Is the wifi AP yours? You can filter out the smartphone MAC address from there, and then you will be able to connect with your laptop but not with your smartphone. I understand that might not be a good solution if you move a lot and often use the wifi in shops, cafes and the like. But it would work if you use the laptop for work and don’t want to use the smartphone on the same wireless network, that you have the password for.

Editing the antenna parameters, or renaming the antenna configuration files, would make the wifi completely nonfunctional (unless/until they are edited again). While everything would remain completely open, most of us do not stand a chance to reverse that from memory.

You probably should also consider how to avoid accessing the internet from the cellular network. Cost is a good deterrent but not a perfect filter 🙂

There are wifi toggle switch apps.

I wonder whether you can download that, turn wifi off, then lock that app with an app lock.

Smart app protector has a feature to block wifi access and you can password protect it.
