    So I brought my car to the auto body shop yesterday and I mentioned to the Jamaican worker that I bring my car to that my shul is getting an armed guard for 4 hours (which I think is pointless but that’s for a different thread) and he said if it was up to him the guy should be killed eye for an eye style. He then said in Jamaica they had a rule that if someone kills then he gets hanged and murder was really low and once they took that rule away murder has shot up in Jamaica

    Which got me thinking, maybe the reason that murder is so high in America is not because of the guns but because we don’t do corporal punishment anymore to serve as a deterrent and instead of getting killed murderers stay in jail for 30 years (if they kill one person and they are out on parole)

    Yes, I know they are able to use the death penalty in Pennsylvania but I’m saying most of the US doesn’t have the death penalty and even then the cases are few and far between and if there was more case of the death penalty people would think twice before killing someone

    Coffee Addict……………..
    You mean CAPITAL punishment, NOT CORPORAL Punishment……………………..

    Corporal..refers to the body…hitting, slapping, beating
    Capital refers to the head…..they used to execute prisoners by chopping off their heads. Some societies mounted the heads on poles for the populace to see and be deterred from similar crimes.

    #2 Almost every modern study says capital punishment is not a deterrent. Most murders are crimes of passion or committed by the mentally deranged

    The death penalty only fully works if it is automatic. Not up to a jury or judge. Rather once he’s convicted of murder the sentence is automatically death. The court should only decide upon guilt or innocence, not upon the sentence.

    Even Texas only executes a tiny portion of their murderers. If all 50 states automatically executed every convicted murderer (upon the exhaustion of his appeals, which itself must be done swiftly) the murder rate in the United States would drop percipitously. This has never occurred yet since the death penalty has only been applied selectively.

    That said, the death penalty should be applied for reasons of justice, not merely determent.

    Rav Moshe zt’l petitioned New York State Governor Mario Cuomo to reinstate the death penalty in New York. It is in the Igros Moshe.

    The U.S. has executed many innocent people, so it can’t be trusted.

    The US has let out of jail many guilty people so it can’t be trusted either

    I personally believe that killing an innocent person is worse than not convicting a guilty one.

    Even if they in turn kill innocent people?

    @Coffee Addict

    The point is that I agree with Capital Punishment for those who commit Premeditated Murder (Murder in the First Degree),
    I am against beating, floggings and even teachers hitting pupils>>>>>corporal punishment.

    BTW>>>>I am a Democrat
