Depends where “here” is. Israel – lots of Jews own guns, carry them openly, not much shooting going on. New York – I don’t know, but no one I know in New York owns a gun, except for one Jew I know whose wife is gentile. His guns are hunting rifles, are not used as defensive weapons.

Do not confuse the right to own a gun with having one. Unless you like to hunt (very hard for a Yid- we need to bring a goy to eat the treff animal since it otherwise it would be Tsar Baal Hayyim) or shoot targets, it isn’t worth owning a gun unless you have enemies you need to defend against.

In America, there aren’t many people we would want to shoot.

In Israel, the zionists have a lot of people they like to shoot. It isn’t that hareidim don’t have people they’ld love to shoot, but their rabbanim tell them no to.

Re akuperma’s first post: I have never heard a Jew – frum, Zionist or other – say he would like to shoot any human being. And just to be clear, when I say “human being,” I include Palestinians, even the murderous ones, and their parents. Yet you seem to think there are some gun-happy Jews out there. If you have some specific examples, please tell us. Otherwise, where is your ahavas yisrael?

Akuperma: Shooting and killing an animal on the spot is not Tza’ar Ba’alei Chayim but might be Bal Tashchis (see the Minchas Chinuch on P’sik Reisha).

Any real man would own at least a handgun and a rifle and shotgun. If you don’t, you’re probably really a woman. Just saying.

BTW, regarding hunting, I forgot who it was that said that it’s actually permitted, but it’s not “jewish” to do.

Akuperma, There are ‘enemies’ in America i.e. rioters, looters, robbers. I heard a story about a guy in Lakewood who stopped somone from coming into his house by pointing his gun at the intruder through the door.

R’ Meir Kahane, HY”D, ZT”L, was 100% correct on this matter- for every Jew, a .22. Jewish antipathy to guns is foolish and unfounded. Self-defense, including preemptive acts of defense, are not only moral, but also halakhically mandated.

The confiscation of guns undertaken by the Nazis, y”s, and the Bolsheviks, y”s, and every other authoritarian regime to plague the earth should be fair warning to all of us.

As has been stated here before, he was absolutely wrong. Rather:

“lots of Jews own guns, carry them openly, not much shooting going on”

I wish the US would adopt Israel’s gun policies. The National Rifle Association would probably turn anti-Semitic, though, as Israel has draconian restrictions on who is permitted to have a firearm.

“The confiscation of guns undertaken by the Nazis”

The Nazis didn’t confiscate any guns in Germany. The Weimar government had banned guns in 1919, before the Nazi party even existed. The Nazis actually relaxed Germany’s gun laws so that their thugs could terrorize people legally.

Not sure what that means. Everyone in Israel has a gun.

And what in the world do you mean that they would turn anti-semitic? Do you naturally assume that your political opponents are anti-semitic?

They will blast Israel for not allowing all of its citizens to have firearms and will criticize the US for adopting foreign (Israeli) ideas.

    Only the anti-Israel ones.

My dad’s friend has a gun in case of burglary- he was interviewed for that Mishpacha article.

It’s funny- I live in Monsey, and I don’t know if any of you guys looked at that Journal News map of gun-owners a couple months back, but I never realized how many people I knew had guns.

Most people I know of were livid about that map- like my dad was annoyed because now burglars know to just make their way to our hose.

I have had a direct Pesak from Mike Bloomberg, not to have a gun, therefore out of respect for Mike Bloomberg, I do not possess a gun.

I owned guns for protection, and for nuisance control while in NY and for fear of complications, when I left for EY, I disposed of them responsibly. From my present perspective in EY, that was irresponsible, although for my “nail em to the wall” gun, it was hard to get that caliber in NY, and probably impossible in EY.

    147,

Bloomberg is able to give a psak? Would he even know which way is up in a did due?

Another question, how did you even think he is appropriate to ask a Sheila to, a mechael Shabbos bfarhesya.

As long as you hold by his shitos, do you hold it’s assur to have a large sweet drink?

If the Jewish community actually followed that principle, you’d be shutting down 3/4 of the heimishe food establishments and every balabuste on the Orthodox street, whether it be 16th Avenue, Avenue M, or Park Heights Avenue, would be left with no recipes to prepare. Gehakhte leber, cheesecake, blintzes with sour cream, gribenes, chulent with kishke and kugel, fatty, juicy pastrami, salami, chopped egg, Motzei Shabbos Mendelsohn’s pizza, fries, and ice cream, and many other heimishe gustatory habits would fly right out the window, not that that’s a bad thing, per se.

Owning a gun can be a very practical measure towards promoting one’s wellbeing, on the other hand.

rebdoniel. The Noda B’yehuda disagrees with your assertion. According to his psak lehalacha it is only tzaar baalei chayim if you maim an animal with the intention to leave it alive. If you shoot to kill it is not TBC – independent of your reasons for shooting it. Furthermore, it is not called baal tashchis unless you have no reason to kill it. Possible reasons for killing an animal could be for population control, to harvest their skins/feathers/horns or to prevent them from damaging property such as in the case of wild boar or other mazikim. He doesn’t speak highly of recreational hunting for middos reasons, but you should have your facts straight.

It’s crazy how nowadays it’s more dangerous to own a gun then to not. If chas vasholam someone would need to use their gun in self defense they would face a long trial maybe ending in jail time. I still believe its beneficial to own a gun, but using it, even in self defense, has unfair consequences.

    #960803

I’m from Midwood and have recently got a permit and a tactical shotgun. Planning on buying more but limited by NYC’s 3 month waiting period between purchasing guns.

I know another frum shotgun/rifle owner in Midwood and a gun owner who moved to Lakewood. Also know several people who want but at this time can’t afford.

It’s very easy to get a rifle/shotgun permit if you were never arrested or committed. Harder to get a pistol permit and almost impossible to get a concealed carry.

If anyone is interested in getting a permit, friend me on facebook, ookami.bg, and I’ll help you get your permit and can help you get a scary looking tactical shotgun.

btw, as far as self defense, NY has a form of castle law and especially if you have little kids at home and only one door, killing someone inside your home is perfectly justified. And even better if your wife does it.

CharlieHall is correct, private gun ownership in Israel is illegal. You have to be in security etc to get a permit & you must renew it annually.

And like all well intentioned gun laws, it fails the individual. It only works where the law rules. In most arab villages, there is more metal than rock, and this posts a huge risk to anyone living in proximity to such a village (such as the entire perimeter of Jerusalem.)

There are quite a few Jewish communities who live in Open Carry states. In TX, you need a license I believe to carry, in CA you can get a license to carry but the ammo has to be separate. In PA you don’t need a license to open carry, except in Philadelphia.

ubiquitin: Exactly what Gamanit says. We don’t have a gun (though my dad says he’s tempted sometimes) which means that if someone notices that on the map they know we’re a safe target. (It’s actually more because I don’t think anyone on my block has one, so if you were to go on a spree my block would be a great place.

(If anyone is now looking up the map- if it’s still available- to plan his/her burglary of the night, get the idea out of your head. Yes, I’m talking to YOU over there.)

nishtayngesheft, I was responding to your question about whether or not it is assur to consume large soft drinks.
