Those two schools that accepted your daughter are great schools.

Its good that there are schools that accepted her. If the reason for not wanting those schools is for a reason such as quality of secular education, you can always supplement that (like having her read a book and write a report on it in spare time. I know ppl who do that).

I am also applying for my oldest daughter. We applied to 8 schools and have not been accepted to any, so count your blessings, and make your decision quickly so the school you are not sending to can give the slot to another family.

These schools, Hashem hand picked for your daughter. I don’t know why. Neither do you, but G-d knows that your daughter needs these schools.

It’s not just there, the Bet Shemesh stuation is crazy too! I have a cousin there who said that there is literally one choice if you want BY and doing the local goverment tests so she can actual do something with her life. She mentioned though that 2 new schools are opening up there, so this coming year the situation should be better at least by a little.

Shopping613 but in Beine Brak it might get easier to get accepted to the schools there

In eretz yisrael, if you work you are considered a goy. In lakewood, you’re not a goy, just a second class citizen. Both of them have forgotten that in krias shema it says “v’asafta deganecha”, the gemara’s source that people should work. In fact, the last mishnah in kiddushin is dedicated to choosing a proper profession. Kollel is a wonderful ideal, but that doesn’t mean working people shouldn’t be able to get their kids into school.

Part of the present schism between Degel and Eitz ,is that Degel has been bringing ‘working charedim’/Charda”k into their rank and file.

This has prompted the reaction .Interestingly,a disproportionate percentage of Eitz supporters are anglos and americans and anglos

About Time, I’m guessing you were quoting Gafne.

Part of what he’s saying I understand:

“The idea of “Working Chareidim” is fiction and a joke. A “Chareidi” is someone who is mechanech his children to obey the Gedolei Yisrael. Period. What’s the difference if he’s working or not?”

    Here’s the part I don’t understand:

“I’m totally not ignoring the fact that working people have problems getting their children accepted to Yeshivos. We must establish institutions that are suitable for all the different parts of the population. We just opened up this week a new school in Elad for this tzibbur…”

Note- he’s definitely not saying that we have to integrate children of working fathers into the Yeshivos that already exist. We must set up new, separate (!!!) institutions for them.

    Why?

Can you, About Time, or anybody else, explain why the children whose fathers learn full-time and those whose fathers work and are kovea ittim cannot sit next to each other in the same classrooms, learn from the same Rabbayim (or Mechanchot), and play together at recess?

I can agree with Gafne’s final point (perhaps with a bit of hesitation) that the learners are the elite. But why can’t they, like Shevet Levi, spread out among the people to be a positive influence? Why are their children not allowed to learn Torah in the same classrooms as the “less elite” members of society?

(My hesitation, in case your wondering, comes from the fact that to my understanding, the whole idea of “Elite” is anathema to us. We are all here to find our path to sincere Avodas HKB”H. The reward and award system is not designated by us mere mortals in this world; it’s for the Next World. Which is probably where “Olam Hafuch Ra’isi” came from.)

I think the elite ones here are those who are kovea ittim. They are the ones who are up before dawn learning, perhaps learning in the middle of the day, and again running out to learn at night. This is in addition to supporting their families.

    I hear you, takahm.

Certainly you’re entitled to that opinion.

And would you allow children of your elite, and of those less elite, to mingle in the same classrooms?

It’s not even that, it’s that the schools want a good reputation and good girls that are closed and BY. Unfortunately BS dosent have much of that type of that girl, and if they do they don’t want to do bagrut. So all the schools that are BY don’t accept anyone not in the mold…

    It’s sad.

    #1059685

I’m quoting my brother and friends who can’t get their kids into school because they work, (even the non American ones).

Absolutely. Maybe if more mingling was allowed between the “elites” and “less elites” there would be less problems between people later on in life.

If someone works for a living and can’t get their child into a school for that reason, I’d think they’d be thrilled. Why would they want their child to be the second class citizen of a backwards school? The problem in Lakewood seems to be that people who have their heads on straight buy into the backwards’ definition of elite. The schools that are “willing” to accept the elite children are the elite schools. Period.

In this context elite means the children of the more responsible people with the better hashkafos. Probably brighter genes too, on average. Not saying that there aren’t good kids who grow up in a kollel home, just on average. People should not let the backwards people determine eliteness.

Was everyone’s outrage over this so great that the mods couldn’t

Lol. Finally when the tables are turned it’s insulting. Otherwise its just ahavas chinam, right? Being that men are obligated to work to support their family, and being that it’s usually the smart thing to do, at least my insults come from a place of relative truth.

-See Gemorah Brachos “Bzman sheinam oisim rezoinoi shel makoim” regarding that posuk. Mishnah Berurah Paskens yechidim like Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (about that gemorah).

    – Did you also look at the Rabbi Nehoirai part of that mishnah in kiddushin?
