My 27 year old daughter just came back from a date tonight with a very top bochur. I was told by the rosh yeshiva that he was by far the biggest masmid. Which explains my shock when after the fifth date he felt comfortable to show up the way he did. I feel bad that I had to, but I sent him home. He walked in wearing very nice clothes, but that I could handle, his mother probably bought it for him, it’s not his fault. I can excuse the fancy cashmere scarf and wool coat for the same reason. But not the laces. No one who calls himself a masmid and pretends to be in front of his rebbe should be walking around in tie shoes! The bitul torah that it takes every time You put them on is inexcusable! Even if it was his mother, I don’t care! Walk barefoot! But don’t you dare come to my house on a date in laces. And worst of all, now my daughter thinks that I ruined her life when I was doing it for her good. She was ready to get married to this guy. Shame on him!

THIS WAS A PURIM SHPIEL, folks. Even I could see that. But the not so funny joke, is that there was a letter to a shadchan about a very nice boy who walked in wearing (GASP!) colorful socks, and the mother nixed the shidduch (if memory serves). When such external NAARISHKEIT (YES, I SAID NAARISHKEIT!) determines a person’s worthiness as a shidduch, or without even knowing him defines that person’s character, I say the boy dodged the shivigger bullet. And I feel sorry for the daughter. Hope she is not still sitting home, waiting for the perfect shidduch for her mother.

Any time I hear of a mother of a 27 year old boy turning down a shidduch, what comes to mind is what a lucky girl! Any 27 year old that allows his mommy to run his life truly is a boy and the mother would be a source of aggravation for any future wife
