If Hashem wants you to win, one should be enough.

Even one is a waste of money.

Joseph, one is hishtadlus. If you are not in it, you can’t win it.

Is it hishtadlus to only buy one?

Rav Shalom Arush says that it’s permitted to play the lottery but that one should buy just one ticket. That’s because if Hashem wants you to win, he can surely do so with just one ticket. Buying lots of tickets would seem to be an attempt to manipulate the odds in your favor, as if whether you win is really under your control.

    Laskern,

I wasn’t saying as opposed to two, I was saying as opposed to 2000

Joseph, one is hishtadlus. If you are not in it, you can’t win it.

You could find the winning ticket on the floor, or get a ticket as a gift.

DY, you might not have the zachusim to find it or given as gift, which you have no control over.

But I have control over picking the winning numbers??

It wouldn’t take zechusim to beat 300 million to 1 odds??

laskern: You also have no control over picking the correct numbers on the ticket you buy. So the point is the same buying or finding/gifting.

You have to do some kind of hishtadlus by buying one ticket as mentioned above in the name of the Lubavitcher Rebbe ztz”l, so even though you have no control whether you will win, but you did yours.

Perhaps it’s a Lubavitcher minhag to purchase a lottery ticket, but that doesn’t relate to other kehilos.

Why is that called doing yours since the odds are so ridiculously long? Yes, you’ve increased your odds by buying a ticket, but you also increase your odds by buying multiple tickets, but you’re against that.

    🤔

“DY, you might not have the zachusim to find it or given as gift, which you have no control over”

What if I don’t have the zechusim to win 1/300,000,000 odds (or whatever it is) but I do have the zechusim to win 1/150,000,000 odds

Just because this keeps coming up:
The Lubavitcher Rebbe told one person in a (semi) private audience that he should buy one ticket, after he asked whether he should. In no way does that show what the Rebbe’s general opinion was regarding buying lottery tickets, hishtadlus vs bitachon, etc etc. Until one knows the full back story of the individual, one can not properly gauge anything from the story

An interesting side point: In “Reshimas Hayoman” – The Lubavitcher Rebbe’s personal diary, it relates that the 3rd and 4th Chabad Rabbeim (The ‘Tzemach Tzedek’ – a famed posek – and the Rebbe Maharash) used to buy lottery tickets
