Do moderators use their power to take down opinions they disagree with? With out the public being aware?

    We didn’t take this down…

    I’ve never abused my power.

    #1683893

If that were the case there would be few threads left

    #1683897

There have been many times over the years where a poster will make controversial comments in a post using l”h or inappropriate words and when we delete it they accuse us of doing so because of the controversial aspect.

Do moderators use their power to take down opinions they disagree with?

    Thanks for the idea!

Sometimes I delete posts because the delete key is easier to reach than the approve key

Do mods ever disagree with each other, or does that only happen to mere mortals?

@mods-to be perfectly honest i think there are many threads that should be taken down. Especially since they appear on google searches and especially the ones which are controversial topics. My ideology is like this, when people argue sometimes they say things for that moment. Most people arent wanting to have their comments archived for others to read later especially since opinions might change or as Ive stated before it was only meant for that moment. This is the problem also nowadays since people have conversations and arguments via text, whatsapp and may say things that dont hold for later on. Its like when people have a discussion would they want it to always be recorded and for others to listen and review? Obviously not thats why they dont treat what they say as if they are writing an essay and that it will be set in stone, they would calculate every word. Nowadays our conversations are literally set in stone or infinite stones since they can be circulated everywhere and anywhere in a split second and pretty much can never be taken back. Once its out there its out of anyones control. If you guys dont take down senseless threads and arguments at least block them from google searches. Ive seen ywn topics come up on google searches which are a huge chilul Hashem and also sinas chinam between Yidden. At least keep them hidden if not removed completely with a fresh start. Whats the use of collecting and keeping them forever? Just taking up space on your servers. The velt knows more about us nowadays than we share amongst ourselves. Anyone can literally know all thoughts and actions amongst Yidden which arent meant to be out in the open and are there forever. If you were in the dark about your fellow Yidden, open up a search. You’ll know everything.

Writer: Perhaps consider the virtues of brevity from a Mod’s perspective….as they say ” Long posts are difficult to moderate….. breaking up long posts into several shorter ones might help…..it is easier to delete a post than to edit it…”

    #1684059

I’m not quite sure why your message is directed to the mods and not to the posters who would seem to be either forgetting they are posting online or too impulsive to think before they type.

Mod 29- well it’s natural for people to be impulsive during a discussion/debate or argument especially on sensitive topics. True people should be careful but people tend to forget that all they say gets saved. As I’ve mentioned before when someone has a discussion they don’t mean for it all to be recorded for review later especially if they won’t mean it afterwards or it’s taken out of context. The reason I geared it towards mods is because these appear on Google searches which might be in your control.

And gadolhadorah if it’s too long for you to read then don’t. Mods have allowed much longer pieces when they make sense.

It’s not the length, it’s the lack of spacing.

Putting some space between paragraphs makes your writing easier to read.

Why would you assume that YWN mods control the Google?

Writer…..Mods sometimes allow an entire megillah to be posted when brevity might have made the same points more efficiently. Point was made that under the CR posting guidelines, SEVERAL of the factors I cited as to why a post might be deleted have to do with its length so hamayvin yavin.

I am not a moderator for YWN, but for another website. We have strict guidelines to follow. i have had some of my posts rejected for not following CR rules. MODS do their jobs even if I may disagree with their decision.

    Ooh, cool! Which site?

YWN is not a site like CNN pretending to be unbiased. We come here for Yeshivishly biased news. If the bias we come here for manifests itself in the moderation sometimes that would neither surprise nor bother me.

Well technically you can choose to block your content from appearing on google searches so ya there is some control over it.

And Neville what is the point of archiving so many senseless debates for all to read that are both a Chilul Hashem and promote Sinas Chinam by Yidden? And im sure there are many things you and many others contributed that youd be surprised you wrote at the time since maybe you dont feel the same way anymore and would be glad to see it removed.

I mean its nice to archive threads but if they are doing harm then in my opinion it is not a good thing. Aside for the fact that most of those threads are so old and will never be opened up again by anyone in the coffee room, but if a random person searches for something on google they will appear and it opens up a can of worms with opinions and thoughts from past years and past thoughts that arent so relevant except for fueling hatred.

Do you really think it’s wise for a website (or any other business) to prevent people from finding out it exists?

RebYidd23-“Do you really think it’s wise for a website (or any other business) to prevent people from finding out it exists?”

Noone ever mentioned preventing people from knowing the site exists. It has nothing to do with keeping the provocative Coffee Room threads from appearing in google searches. In fact it actually makes the website look bad if every time you google something you see negative sentences popping up with the website YWN linked to it.

Do you think the integrity of Yahoo News is damaged by weird stuff random people ask on Yahoo Answers? I think most people have the common sense to differentiate between various services offered by a site.

Well you guys seem like nice guys and I do want to trust u all, but how do I know what u r saying is true.

The only real way to prove u r not abusing your power is either to have an audit or to have a garbage dump thread where all the rejected post go.
I prefer the garbage dump thread as I think it might be more fun.
Not that I would want to make fun of some post but it probably would be a fun activity on chul hamoed😁
