So at mincha on erev Rosh Chodesh right at the end of chazaras hashas, I sit down and put my head down on my left arm, then jump up when kaddish starts. This is my helige minhag, and I will look down on anyone who doesn’t do this.

    #1620365

I believe that I would call this a minhag shtus……BTW do you do th same thing during chodesh nissan or on chol hamoed…..

You must be one of those unfortunate people who lacks the zechus of repeating shemoneh esrei because you forgot yaalei v’yavo.

“BTW do you do th same thing during chodesh nissan or on chol hamoed…..”

I’m not a fanatic, if that’s what you’re asking. But sometimes I do it before a bris.

Not even Chanukah yet so your Purim spiel is a bit early….even calling it a “minhag shtus: is a bit too heilege since my golden retriever has a similiar minhag. However, since he came from a Sephardeshe breeder, he carefully waits until the shaliach tzibur has already started the kaddish after the chazaras hashatz gets to to the “V’yatzmach purkanei v’korev moishichei…” At that point he barks twice and starts chasing his tail..

I can defend his minhag. Maybe he wants to show with physical action that he is not saying tachnun erev rosh chodash by making like saying it but not saying it. See the RMA 690:17 about making noise by Haman, not to mock any minhogim because they were not for nothing established.

To show you a strange minhag where I came from a town on the
Hungarian and Austrian border called Sopron, where the town dates back to the Romans. They would bring on Simchas Torah to the baal tefila for halel in place of lulav and esrog a potato and a corn stalk. I saw this with my own eyes.

My erev R”C minhag is that I send a message to our family WhatsApp group reminding everyone that R”C begins that evening. I also include when R”C ends.

The minhag for erev Rosh Chodesh, MB 417 s”k 4, is for some to fast and to say Yom Kippur Katan found in the siddurim, being a time of repentence asking for forgiveness for the month.

Laskern: Great idea….do tshuvah and beg for mechilla from the Ebeshter on erev Rosh Chodesh for all your aveiros during mar Cheshvan so you can begin with a clean slate for Kislev and Chanukah. Yasher koach for such a brilliant lifestyle strategy

The Dubner Magid says that sins are like a debt that can be paid up as you incur it, daily every night or weely at the end of the week or erev Rosh Chodesh being meharher btshuva or once a year on Yom Kippur which makes it harder to pay it up.

The Chasam Sofer gives us a strategy to improve oneself. There is always a conflict between the body and soul. We want to make peace between them as it says בקש שלום through ורדפהו meaning to create a small conflict. Let the soul do something small that the body does not like and allow the body to get used to it and then continue the cycle.

Just seems like the imagery of paying off the “debt collector” at very short-term intervals is like something out of the GodFather where he offers “a deal you cannot refuse” along with a Tony Soprano chassid showing up at your doorstep to demand payment. The implication is more goiyeshe where the assumption is you will be a regular sinner and have a regularly scheduled “confession” except is comes on erur rosh chodesh rather than Sunday AM

I’m not insulting your minhag to capitalize in weird places, so don’t insult my minhag to forget that it’s erev Rosh Chodesh and sit for tachanun until the shaliach tzibbur starts kaddish and I stand back up.

“They would bring on Simchas Torah to the baal tefila for halel in place of lulav and esrog a potato and a corn stalk”

By “corn” do you mean maize? Or just a stalk of a general cereal grass like wheat, barley, or rye?

Uhh no. Paying off debt in small intervals is the normal and preferred way to do things. It’s best to tackle things head on as soon as possible rather than waiting for them to become a bigger deal, or worse, you forget entirely about them.

“The implication is more goiyeshe where the assumption is you will be a regular sinner and have a regularly scheduled “confession” except is comes on erur rosh chodesh rather than Sunday AM”

Your problem is with Chazal, who told us to say “s’lach lanu Avinu ki chatanu” three times a day.

avram in MD. are you a shochet?
a rav once saw a shochet on shabbos during davening when saying POSE’ACH ES YADECHA…he moved his right hand towards his left arm out of habit to touch the tefilin shel yad, and the rav fired the shochet. because it showed a lack of concentration. a shochet needs to be highly concentrating on his job.

Many sentences including “Simchas Torah” and “baal tefila”(/synonym) are about strange minhagim.

    knaidlach,

A rav once saw a shochet on Shabbos during davening, and when saying POSE’ACH ES YADECHA…he didn’t move his right hand towards his left arm out of habit to touch the tefilin shel yad. The rav fired the shochet. because he only wanted shochtim in his community who wore tefillin during the week.

Avram. You should make a new rosh chodesh minhag and travel around the country in a chabad-style mitzvah tank and every rosh chodesh visit a new shlachthois to be certain that all the shochtim have the opportunity to wear teffilin….this would be a considerably more heilege minhag than your current peekaboo/jump minhag

I tried it, but every time I encountered a shochet they were davening mussaf and refused the tefillin. Imagine that!
