Do you have this chumra on Pesach?
    What do you eat?

I ate by a family that has this chumra and they served (in addition to matzah and wine, which are the only processed foods that are allowed) meat, salads, fish, and watermelon.

What is the reason behind the chumra?

I happen to know that one of the biggest Litvishe gedolim in America had this chumra (whoever knows who it was, knows).

But what is the point of it?

Ask any Mashgiach – foods that are processed have so many more avenues to go wrong.

If the food has a reliable kosher certification for Pesach, for example OU, then certainly it is kosher bli safek.

The reason….this was how it was done in “der heim” and they do not want to change. That is why some families still make their own mayonnaise, applesauce, grape juice etc.

Why are you questioning someone else’s chumros? It doesn’t bother me that someone else else doesn’t eat processed food. It is their business, not yours.

Meats, salads and fish need to be processed.

    mik5- According to who??
Do you know there are certain “reliable kosher certifications for example OU” that people do not eat all year round?

bmyer- mik5 is referring to people who do eat processed foods year-round but not on Pesach. So it seems that there are hashgachos that they do rely on year-round but not on Pesach. Which hashgachos those are is not relevant to the discussion, and OU was apparently just brought in as an example.

(and let’s try to be careful that this discussion doesn’t c”v end up leading to motzi shem ra about specific hashgachos!)

RY23: How can “raw” items be processed?

When you put something through the food processor, it’s processed.

Everything is processed unless you somehow grow your own food.

If you grow your own food without pesticides you will notice the fruits and vegitables look a bit different than when you buy them in the store

ZD: I believe that packaging of raw items is not considered “processed” for this chumra. Processed foods for this chumra is something that is “processed” (e.g. gefilta fish, mayonnaise, potato chips, etc) are not used on pesach.

Processed salads would be store bought salads that went through commercial machines to chop the vegetables up, add flavors, and them package.

Even buying a homemade salad from a local chef may depend and may or may not be considered processed.

Though… a salad made from vegetables processed in a food processor may be an issue. It may need to be a processor reserved for Pesach food and use only.

Maybe not having a Jewish Torahdik person overseeing the processed Pesach food preparation is like the Cholov Yisroel chumra?

Once again, those with the chunra of not eating “processed” foods will not eat the commercially made salad bags. They may buy bags of baby carrots or heads of lettuce. In this case processed means anything that is as close to its “raw”stAte as possible. That means that while they would buy slices of raw salmon they would not buy smoked salmon (aka lox). Processing the raw ingredients in your own kitchen is not considered processed foods for this chumra.

I hope they shecht and kasher their own meat. How many stories have you heard about non-kosher meat being subsituted , you can never be sure
