Does a person who ate/ drink on YK for medical reasons need to do teshuva, or does it not count as a sin since he was permitted to do this?

It is brought down in Hilchos Teshuva that a person who thinks to himself, “I will sin and then do teshuva,” his teshuva is not readily accepted by Hashem. What does this mean for a person who went into YK knowing that he would have to eat/ drink for medical reasons?

What about a person who went into YK intending to keep the fast in its entirety, but was forced to break it because he became ill during the day?

Properly eating on Yom Kippur for medical reasons is a mitzva, not a sin. It needs the guidance of a Rav, but if done properly its as important as fasting would have been.

Mik5: Such a person should be happy that he was given the opportunity to fulfill the rare Mitzvah of V’chai Bahem. Chas Veshalom that he should have to do T’shuvah for doing what the Torah wants from him.

If you have to eat/break the fast for medical reasons, it actually becomes a mitzvah to do so. Now, obviously it’s not something that’s taken lightly- that’s why most people who are unable to fast are told to do “shiurim” and even that is only allowed under the most pressing of circumstances, but because the halacha is that one who is ill enough must eat, doing so is actually following halacha. A person who goes in knowing they won’t be fasting from the get-go is not sinning (assuming they have consulted with a competent halachik authority), so there is no issue of “sin and then do teshuva”.

If eating on YK is a mitzvah for someone, if he only eats less than the shiurim every 9 minutes is he not fulfilling the mitzvah of eating (since he really isn’t breaking his fast by eating less than the shiur)?

shlishi -He isn’t Mekayem Vchai Bohem because then he would be able to eat regularly. But he is Mekayem V’nsheshmartem Moed Es Nafshosaichem. And eating less than the Shiur is also Ossur because of Chatzi Shiur Ossur Min Hatorah!

Shlishi: V’chai Bahem isn’t a Mitzvas Achila so there is no Chiyuv to eat a Shiur.

Shlishi: Why is Chatzi Shiur being Assur relevant? It’s still less of an Issur so it goes under the category of Ma’achilin Oso Hakal Hakal Techila.
