Hey everyone! I havent been on in a while…I am in Brookdale College… I am a social work major but now i am haveing second thoughts that maybe i shoud switch to nursing I am male 21 yrs old. I was first going for Paralegal bc it was only 2 yrs but then decided to do my dream social work bc once I am going i might as well go and do what i really want but now im thinking nursing bc its like social work in many ways and ppl say that field has a lot more money where social work practicaly has none…is it wrong to switch majors for money if i have to believe that every parnassah comes from hashem so there is no difference what i do? Please let me know what u all think

When the Jews approached David Hemelech and asked him to provide them with parnassa, he didn’t lecture them about Hashem as the source of parnassa. He told them to make a living from each other, i.e., to establish a labor market. Male nursing is much in demand in the labor market and pays well for that reason — as opposed, sorry to say, for social work. (I’m allowed to say that because my wife is a social worker.) As for switching majors for money, assuming you put your money to positive uses, more money means more positive uses….

It is not wrong. There are no jobs in social work whereas nurses can generally get jobs anywhere. You wouldn’t train to build horse drawn trolleys expecting Hashem to provide a parnassah

Whichever field you choose you must A) Have Mazel and Bracha from Hashem B)Be happy C)Do your hishtadlus by picking something that is viable

I assume as a guy you might like cars and driving cars. However you would never consider being a full time parking lot attendant just so you get to drive different cars every day.

You might however take those interests and become a car salesman or invest in a dealership turning your likes into a possibly viable career.

There is nothing wrong about being realistic about needing to make money.True Hashem can bring a windfall but Ain Somchin Al Hanes, you cannot rely on miracles.

To answer your other query strictly differences in salary Biderech Hateva you will make more money as a nurse for at least the first five years after obtaining a masters, and in most cases will not have the same amount in student loan debt.

In order to exceed a nurses salary as a social worker(including getting your masters) after approximately five years in the field you will top out unless you are able to get further certifications (you will work on these things after your masters and it can be done within 3-5 years after graduation)

Additionally, you most probably will work in private practice and be willing (given the current economic times )to take insurance.

After you establish yourself as a private practitioner working full time including evening and some sunday hours, salary for a social worker will be at a range anywhere between 65K-low 6 figure. Otherwise your top off point will be bet. 55-60K

Re Nurse: You will not have to run for clients or worry about salary as your achrayis There are even agencies that will help you find homecare clients. Your top off point if you can get certain certifications and supervisory positions will theoretically be that of an extremely successful social worker. The mid-range nurse without all the above and working full time will be in the 55-75k range still more then a full time social worker that is not in some sort of private practice.( I assume you realize that as a very successful nurse you might also have to work some evening hours)

Take your strengths and interests and sort them out.The career counselor on campus night be able to be of help.Speak to people in the fields that might interest you and then realize what might be realistic for you. You might even pick a profession that currently is not on your radar

    Hatzlacha in whatever you choose:)

    Do accounting.

Nursing has a surplus; there aren’t enough jobs.

Social work, even with a MSW/LCSW, you won’t make all that much money ever.

With accounting, get an MST/CPA. You can make a ton.

dhl144 – If you like medicine why not become a PA or a Doc? Nurses can’t practice medicine – unless they go back to school and become a nurse practioner.

I know quite a few nursing students who graduated last year that can’t find decent jobs. Social work doesn’t pay all that well at the beginning, but once you go private and build up a clientele, you can make at least 100-150 an hour. I don’t know many nurses who make that much. Granted, you will be required to attend trainings to maintain your license (I don’t know if that’s require of nurses), and it’s recommended to keep up to date in the newest research and therapies. Nurses also can have grueling hours, while social workers can generally make their own hours. At the beginning, a nurse might make more, but in the long run, if you are an ambitious person, you can do well for yourself as a social worker.
