Enough of the same old threads on YWN. Let’s discuss real current events here like mature adults.

What are your opinions about McCain vs Obama?

I personally feel that the self-proclaimed “messiah” also known as Barak Hussein ‘Milford’ NoBama is a total jerk, and if elected will self-destruct the United States.

I also think that McCain is a brainless airhead. Besides for being in a jail in Vietnam, he is a flip-flopper all over town.

BUT, I will vote for him anyways.

Since I live in a state where my vote don’t matter (being heavily Dem weighted), I vote just to show up. In this race, my vote will go to Mickey Mouse partly because of the reasons you mentioned. Both are idiots, and one will take over for an even bigger idiot. In my lifetime I can’t remember ever having a candidate that seemed good.

I think for this election in particular, it’s going to be the vice -presidential choice that’s going to determine my vote.

Basically, the President, whether Democrat or Republican, goes with the best advise given to him by the various government agencies. One very vital exception is Supreme Court appointments – while there isn’t anyone ready to retire, you can never be certain.

Ich bin goornisht mechadesh, but When given a choice between Dam (DUMb) or Ttzefardia one would choose the easier “makah”. (Plague)

Now since Obama is a simply a hot air balloon, he has nothing to offer, at least McCain has some experience. And his muslim background also makes me uneasy, so there goes McCain..

I don’t mind so much that Obama shtams from a Muslim father, but the jerk is a neophyte and inexperienced. He has nothing in his resume to position him as President and Commander-in-Chief.

He has no track record on major positions. And he keeps flip-flopping on the positions he has taken.

obama came from nowhere, with extremely little experience (always considered by americans to be a very important presidential requirement).

he is black, a VERY unpopular color in america (despite liberal mouthings).

whatever the actual case he is certainly tainted by islam (his middle name and school if nothing else)not so long after 9/11.

he ran against a VERY big name, their political positions not too disparate.

nevertheless, here he is poised to become the leader of the most powerful nation in the world.

    impossible!!

for anyone who wishes to see the Yad of Hashem, open your eyes and take a look.

    #621148

    willi,

because not everyone in america has a gemara kup.

many got caught up in with his inspiring speeches (which are all fluff and no substance). He knows how to rile up a crowd and make them think that if only he were elected all their problems would disappear. He doesn’t bother telling them how he would do that and they are apparently too stupid to ask.

McCain is not a great choice either but I wouldn’t agree that he is certainly “no better”. He has a track record at least, and is not known to be a flip-flopper. Also, when you read his account of his behavior while in captivity, you can’t help but feel the guy has some character.

Everybody has different criteria in how they choose whom to vote for.(Eg, policies, charisma, character, attitude towards Jews and israel, experience, party…) Mine is the character of the nominee. That’s why I voted for Bush, who, no matter what you say about him, is a true- blue honest and decent man. And no one will refute that he really loves America and led the Country in the best way he understood.

The “character” of Obama scares me, if we are to judge him by his friends and his former pastor of 20 years…

    Thing Big-

I must say that Rev. Wright’s rumblings, about white America, fail in comparison to some somewhat similar things that I heard in my yeshiva days from many Rosh Yeshivas and what I occasionally hear now in some shuls in Flatbush. Thus, I do not think Obama’s attending Wright’s church reflects badly on Obama. Contrary, I think that this association shows Obama’s empathy for his community. Although I do not agree or like Wright’s statements, I understand his frustrations that lead him to those statements. African Americans, as you may know, as a group are not doing to good in comparison to Whites. There is a lot of poverty in their community; many of their families are broken; and they have very few business opportunities.I think it is obvious to any reasonable observer that their current condition is not only African Americans’ fault as some would like you to believe, but in a large measure the result of 200 years of slavery,75 years of apartheid, and after Civil Rights Act of 1964 largely of indifference.Let us not deny their anguished history.

    #621153

    illini,

I agree with think big, but would add that mccain has said what he would do to fix things – he’ll lower taxes to stimualte the economy, he advocates drilling for oil now that the prices have become unbearably high, I think he has a track record of being pro-Israel. And he was not for cutting and running in Iraq even when the going was tough, making me feel that he’ll be a good leader in the fight against the terrorists. He has also been consistently against pork spending by congress.

What has obama accomplished to make you feel he’d be a great president other than giving speeches that are full of hot air? Is it just the fact that he’s a liberal that makes you want him to be pres?

Leib5, come on you want to compare the mussar shmoozen of some Roshei Yeshiva to Rev. Write? Firstly, I believe the goal of the RY is not to be political, but to exhort us to stay away from the evils of materialism that characterizes America (or whichever aspect of the American society that is antithisis to Torah.) I haven’t heard too much of Rev. write personally, but my understanding was that he had a personal grudge against America and Americans for the way they treat Blacks.

On the Contrary, Many Gedolim have called America the medinah shel chessed, and teach that we have to have tremendous hakaras hatov for America.

But all of this is besides the point. We are saying that being under the influence of an extreme Anti-American for 20 years–who happens to be your spiritual leader–reflects on his judgement. (Even if you want to compare it to Roshei Yeshiva, show me one Yeshivah graduate running for president!)The reverend certainly seems imbalanced and almost dangerous. And this is who Obama looked up to for years. Think about it.

I also don’t agree with your last comment that America has not treated The African Americans fairly so we can’t really blame them. Jesse Jackson and his ilk are always using that line of reasoning to excuse their laziness and lack of advancement. As Jews, all we need to do is compare them to our recent history. Its been just about 65 years after 6 million of our people were killed. Most of our ancestors came to these shores broken, without family or money. And look where we are now, b”h.

    Leib5,

I agree with your post. It reminds me of a commentary I learned from the Hagada on the words (in English): “If Hashem would not have taken us out of Egypt, we, our children, and our children’s children would still be enslaved there.” One explanation I learned (and I know this isn’t the only one) is that surely at some point we would have been freed by some “natural” means; however, had we been freed through the action of another Egyptian king, or through the king of another nation, we would have felt indebted to that individual & resented by the Egyptians. In that sense we would still be enslaved, since we would not be completely free from that experience. Instead we were freed through miracles, so that we owe nothing to a flawed person or nation, & immediately taken out of there. What a chessed this is!

Your understanding of black rage not withstanding, its comparison to what you heard and hear in Yeshiva and in Flatbush is not exactly honest. You shouldn’t hear such anger, blame-all-your-problems-on-others and the “smug they-deserve-it” attitudes from unserer rabbonim. Also Obama’s original denial of Rev Wrights radical sermons shows his understanding of mainstream America is not the one we are used to and comfortable with. Do you really want someone who is close to such a view of American culture to be president.

Also, the fact that you believe Rev Wright’s ramblings are similar to ‘things that (you) heard in … yeshiva days from many Rosh Yeshiva’ is no justification to vote for a disciple of his! Honestly would you want a very frum Yid (that believes in what you think he hears in Yeshiva) to be president. I, for one, believe that I fully understanding Yidishkeit and its attitude about the relationship between Yiddim and Goyim and therefor have no problem with a frum president. But I doubt that most Americans could possibly have such an understanding and they would not and should not elect one for president (just as you shouldn’t). I therefor can not consider voting for Obama and neither should you!

He has all the experience that the Constitution requires.

In fact, experience is a limitation (what with tenure and all). Most Presidents (and C-I-C’s) have never been one before.

And, explain to me what experience does for a president, based on past experience. Which President (past or present) do you consider to be experienced? In what way did this experience benefit his management of the country.

My point is, that the presidents whom we thought we the most experienced sometimes turned out to be the biggest disasters. And many of our most revered presidents were once thought of as grossly inexperienced. So I don’t see the point of your argument.

    Reagan

    LBJ

    Truman(?)

    Experienced but lousy:

    Bush

    Nixon

    Carter

And of course, the inverse of each type (experienced and good, inexperienced and lousy)exists too.

squeak, Constitutionally the only qualifications are being a natural-born citizen, 35 years of age and minimum 14-year resident of the US (aside from term limits.) So if any 35 year-old with no experience other than being a resident citizen is your cup of tea, Obama is your man. For the rest of us, we’ll look for something bit more substantial than an empty suit who is a freshman Senator with being a local State legislator his only previous on-the-job experience to purportedly qualify him to lead the U.S. of A.

squek, youre an idiot in the truest sense of the term.

Reagan was inexperienced? are you nuts? he was a two term governor of one of the largest states in america. 8 years as teh executive of a state is considered experience.

Lincoln was a 4 term congressman, at a time when many presidents came from congress, so again, he had experience.

JFK was a 3 term congressman, and a 1.5 term senator.

LBJ did 12 years in congress, and 11 in the senate. not to mention he was a vice president.

Truman did 2 terms in the senate, and was also a vp.

btw, nixon only had 3 years in the congress, and three in the senate, alot less experienced then the above. (still was a great president, irregardless of whitewater, as every president did and still does that stuff.)

wait here comes the good stuff:

Barack Hussein Obama II: community organizer, a law professor. when he announced his intentions to run, he had done barely 2 years in the senate. oh, and his community organizing, yeh, that was for a socialist organization, which has admitted and convicted radicals and terrorists as members. YAY OBAMA!!! you are a real talented guy, so deserving of peoples votes. unfortunately the people deserving to vote for you, under law may no longer vote, because they are convicted felons.

    Sarah Palin vs. Barack Obama

Democrats, between sniggers of derision and snorts of disgust, contend that Sarah Palin, John McCain’s vice-presidential pick is ridiculously unqualified to be president.

It’s a reasonable objection on its face except for this small objection: it surely needs to be weighed against the Democrats’ claim that their own candidate for president is self-evidently ready to assume the role of most powerful person on the planet.

At first blush, here’s what we know about the relative experience of the two candidates. Both are in their mid-forties and have held statewide elective office for less than four years. Both have admitted to taking illegal drugs in their youth.

So much for the similarities. How about the differences?

    Political experience

Obama: Worked his way to the top by cultivating, pandering to and stroking the most powerful interest groups in the all-pervasive Chicago political machine, ensuring his views were aligned with the power brokers there.

Palin: Worked her way to the top by challenging, attacking and actively undermining the Republican party establishment in her native Alaska. She ran against incumbent Republicans as a candidate willing and able to clean the Augean Stables of her state’s government.

    Political Biography

Obama: A classic, if unusually talented, greasy-pole climber. Held a succession of jobs that constitute the standard route to the top in his party’s internal politics: “community organizer”, law professor, state senator.

Palin:A woman with a wide range of interests in a well-variegated life. Held a succession of jobs – sports journalist, commercial fisherwoman, state oil and gas commissioner, before entering local politics. A resume that suggests something other than burning political ambition from the cradle but rather the sort of experience that enables her to understand the concerns of most Americans..

    Political history

Obama: Elected to statewide office only after a disastrous first run for a congressional seat and after his Republican opponent was exposed in a sexual scandal. Won seat eventually in contest against a candidate who didn’t even live in the state.

Palin: Elected to statewide office by challenging a long-serving Republican incumbent governor despite intense opposition from the party.

    Appeal

Obama: A very attractive speaker whose celebrity has been compared to that of Britney Spears and who sends thrills up Chris Matthews’ leg

Palin: A very attractive woman, much better-looking than Britney Spears who speaks rather well too. She sends thrills up the leg of Rush Limbaugh (and me).

    Executive experience

Obama: Makes executive decisions every day that affect the lives of his campaign staff and a vast crowd of traveling journalists

Palin:Makes executive decisions every day that affect the lives of 500,000 people in her state, and that impact crucial issues of national economic interest such as the supply and cost of energy to the United States.

    Religious influences

Obama: Regards people who “cling” to religion and guns as “bitter” . Spent 20 years being mentored and led spiritually by a man who proclaimed “God damn America” from his pulpit. Mysteriously, this mentor completely disappeared from public sight about four months ago.

Palin: Head of her high school Fellowship of Christian Athletes and for many years a member of the Assemblies of God congregation whose preachers have never been known to accuse the United States of deliberately spreading the AIDS virus. They remain in full public sight and can be seen every Sunday in churches across Alaska. A proud gun owner who has been known to cling only to the carcasses of dead caribou felled by her own aim.

    Record of bipartisan achievement

Obama: Speaks movingly of the bipartisanship needed to end the destructive politics of “Red America” and “Blue America”, but votes in the Senate as a down-the-line Democrat, with one of the most liberal voting records in congress.

Palin: Ridiculed by liberals such as John Kerry as a crazed, barely human, Dick Cheney-type conservative but worked wit Democrats in the state legislature to secure landmark anti-corruption legislation.

Former state Rep. Ethan Berkowitz – a Democrat – said. “Gov. Palin has made her name fighting corruption within her own party, and I was honored when she stepped across party lines and asked me to co-author her ethics white paper.”

    On Human Life

Obama: Devoutly pro-choice. Voted against a bill in the Illinois state senate that would have required doctors to save the lives of babies who survived abortion procedures. The implication of this position is that babies born prematurely during abortions would be left alone, unnourished and unmedicated, until they died.

Palin: Devoutly pro-life. Exercised the choice proclaimed by liberals to bring to full term a baby that had been diagnosed in utero with Down Syndrome.

Now it’s true there are other crucial differences. Sen Obama has appeared on Meet The Press every other week for the last four years. He has been the subject of hundreds of adoring articles in papers and newsweeklies and TV shows and has written two Emmy-award winning books.

Gov Palin has never appeared on Meet the Press, never been on the cover of Newsweek. She presumably feels that, as a mother of five children married to a snowmobile champion, who also happens to be the first woman and the youngest person ever to be elected governor of her state, she has not really done enough yet to merit an autobiography.

Then again, I’m willing to bet that if she had authored The Grapes of Wrath, sung like Edith Piaf and composed La Traviata , she still wouldn’t have won an Emmy.

Fortunately, it will be up to the American people and not their self-appointed leaders in Hollywood and New York to determine who really has the better experience to be president.
