Mike Moskowitz is a typical haredi Orthodox rabbi.

He wears a black suit and black hat. He sports a thick, curly beard beneath a closely shaved head. He peppers his speech with liturgical Hebrew and Yiddish words. He quotes from Jewish legal texts.

Moskowitz sometimes closes his eyes when he talks, swaying back and forth and rubbing his fingers together as if he’s engaged in deep Talmud study. He spent years upon years studying at traditional haredi yeshivas. Today he lives in Lakewood, a New Jersey shore town of some 100,000 residents well known for its largely haredi population.

What is incumbent upon ourselves besides vocally denigrating and protesting, is to excommunicate anyone who is associated in any way with fellas like him

I’m not going to make a self-repressed and insulting comments like Joseph, but I don’t think that this Rabbi would qualify as Orthodox due to his positions.

While I don’t support or defend this lifestyle, why is this different than any other “kiruv” situation where many members of a shul are not religious? (This is assuming that the shul is run according to orthodox standards)

It’s, the Gemara there says that when it comes to murder there is no such thing for Jews either. In contrast, see Chullin 15b מנהג אבותיהן בידיהן. I also heard that there is a difference between mishpatim and chukkim regarding לא יאמר אדם אי איפשי ללבוש שעטנז, אי אפשי לאכול בשר חזיר, אי איפשי לבוא על הערוה, אבל (יאמר) איפשי ומה אעשה ואבי שבשמים גזר עלי כך.(Siifra Kedoshim 10).

It’s a problem. You can thank all the Jews who helped Obama and the demd gain a mandate which was set to destroy any good that was left In American culture which is based on Jewish ideas. In every generation there are going to be fake rabbis. You can’t worry about them.

For those of lakewood who ARE aware and don’t care or even smirk, not only is He rolling over in his grave, but so is every righteous man since Adam

I hadn’t heard of this before. He used to be an Aish campus Rabbi at Columbia, apparently. That’s scary for a couple of reasons:

    1. Either Aish is doing a terrible job of vetting for letting this guy in. He could have destroyed hundreds of kids, misleading them in what right and wrong are.
    2. Or, it could mean he was actually frum, and living around a liberal, college environment destroyed him. How often might this be happening?

he is a frum lakewood guy, it seems a close family member of his ‘Changed Identities” and that is what changed his views

Exactly why he took this position I do not know. I am only guessing here

Perhaps its better to keep a little contact with these people so they can do Tshuva than cut them off so they will never come back, Tough Love doesnt always work and many times its backfire.

May these people do Tshuva for their averiahs

Has anyone considered the possibility that he’ll try to get them to do tshuva?

Even if he’s successful with a small percentage, wouldn’t that be an accomplishment?

    #1548505

    adocs,
    No .
Firstly how come we giving him alibis? If so ,let him talk for himself
Need we state the obvious?By taking the title he is a choteh U’macht for the whole region , just for giving legitimacy,
Second,How abut taking a postion in a reconstructionist or reform temple to supposedly for tshuva ? In those cases at least no one is misled

The chofetz Chaim,as is well known, stated that Amalek includes those of jewish extraction

ITFT: He was replying to my comment.

I’m assuming Joseph is going with the bad vetting theory on my post. There might be practices they have that I’m not so OK with either, but I don’t know that I would infer that they’re so left wing that it could lead to this. They aren’t like OU/RCA left wing, much less Avi Weiss left-wing.

he openly states his position, there is no mitzvah to dan a rasha likav zchus. in fact the opposite is true.

he is there only to give them a haskama.

rav ahron soloveichik paskened that Orthodox Yeshivas could not march in the Israeli Day Parade as long as this temple marched under the banner of a Gay “synagogue”. I can imagine how much he would scream against this evil!

Moskowitz also says that normative Orthodoxy gets Jewish law wrong when it comes to transgender identity. He says, for example, that the biblical ban on cross-dressing is actually a prohibition on misrepresenting one’s gender identity — no matter what it is — through clothing.

“Transgender as an awareness is just a presence of understanding,” he says. “There’s no prohibition to acknowledge the reality of something when it comes to one’s identity. If a person says about themselves ‘this is who I am,’ it’s not a space of choice.”

    Whatever you say, Mike.

I have never heard that AISH was leftist, however if you are going to do Kiruv, you have to know how to talk to people. Giving them a schmooze by Rav Avigdor Miller is probably going to backfire for most people

Would a shul of thieves (or inside traders, or just plain old fashioned gonifs) be such a controversy? Just because a Yid is flunking at one mitsva does not exempt them from the rest. And frankly, would we want such persons, even if they are otherwise frum, in our shuls?

    #1549122

    Akuperma, Wrong.
IT would depend if it was L’taavon or l’hacha’as.And when a group of sinners joins flaunting grievous sins that is categorically L’haachas..It would be much better if they go flunk the rest cf.Isaiah chap.1

    Zdad,
