In the US, is OU a broadly acceptable hescher?
I thought it was the top but someone recently told me otherwise. I’m confused.
Well, considering the number of national hashgachos in the US, it stands to reason that some folks might prefer one over another.
But, more to your point, I’ve heard from certain Chareidi individuals that they are not happy with hashgachos that certify non-cholov Yisroel products. In other words, it’s not only of the OU they disapprove.
I don’t know whether the same people would eat parve products under such a supervision.
Personally, I – for whatever that’s worth – do consider the OU to be a top-notch kosher organization. It is my understanding that many other “heimeshe” hashgochos in turn depend on the OU, especially regarding their commercial ingredient lists.
LB: It is hard to say which hashgachoh is the “top”. It is a “poorly kept secret” that all hashgachos have rely on each other as key ingredients might be under the hashgachah of (Star-K, OK, Kof-K) and are used by a company under the hashgachoh of the OU.
To answer your question, yes, it is widely accepted but not unanimously.
The OU is the most recognizable hashghcha, They have a name that no other Hashghcha comes close to. If they would make a mistake everyone would find out fairly quickly and they would shut down.

Lightbrite, I’m going to go out on a limb here and tell you you can eat OU products, as well as OK and Star K, as they are all reliable hashgachos. Many people will not rely on them though, and might also take the time to post here and criticize me (or worse) for telling you it’s okay to eat foods with these kosher certifications.
It would be great if you could find a Rav to speak to, instead of relying on The (Un)Official CR Handbook of Halacha. I saw your thread about washing your hands on a plane. You can get some answers here, but there are different opinions. You’ll always do best asking a Rav- you’ll get answers that are appropriate for you in the circumstances you find yourself in.

Others are not happy with hashgachos that support “zionism” and others due to infighting among various communities and groups. Kashrus is a big business, or as some say, there is too much Kash in Kashrus.
One advantage of the OU, over many other certifying agencies is that they are an open book. Their policies and guidelines are not secrets and if you ask, they will be happy to answer.

To say they completely rely on the OU is an overstatement. They rely on the OU when a particular product meets their own standards as well.
If it doesn’t, they don’t.

in some circumstances they rely on the OU as far as the ingredients aree concerned, but supervise special runs to ensure other criteria such as bishul yisrael are met (where the OU doesnt require bishul yisroel).
Do Chadishe hashghcas ever rely on Triangle-K?
Theprof1: So if the OU relies on the Star-K for ingredient “A” and ingredient “A” is used in an OU product that the “so called hasidishe and very strict hashgochos” just put their sticker on, how can you say that they only use ingredients under the OU Hashgachah?
