Buy sheet music for songs that you don’t know. BTW it’s ear, not air.

It’s easier to play by air than by ear. One could hook up a piano to a mouthpiece and blow, it’s quite hard to play with one’s ear. I did try though.

i play air piano ALL the time. drives ppl crazy!!! i do it basically any time i’m listening to music (alone)

i took piano lessons for about a year by someone who wanted me to play classical-ie strictly by notes and i had no interest so i left. my basis of music is notes-and all the fancy lingo it comes with. after i left i played by ear.

basically, i taught myself to play by ear. i do use a book i got when i had lessons that i use for finding the minor keys and for the cadences.

until i started nursing school, i practiced alot. i havent touched a keyboard other than for typing since winter break 🙁

when i did play by ear i either first figured out the melody, then figured out the cords to go along. when i knew the cord order cold, i wrote it down-baruch hagever looked like this “C Am F G …” after that i would experiment with arpeggios along with cords or arpeggios with melody, would it work with a rhythm and cords etc.

if i found sheet music online, most of the work was done. i would play around with the cords till i found the sound i liked more.

this is (was) my technique but i think there are others in the CR who are more musically inclined than i am

I can play pretty well by ear but I have no clue how to do chords. I play the flute, where there aren’t any chords, so I have no motivation to learn.

Well I play by ear a bit, I can play a few chords. I actually composed a few songs on the piano too. However, I must tell you that a family member of mine has taken lessons and boy can she play! Its so worth it! Its beautiful when u can play the way its meant to be played. Go for it.

Alto music on rt 59 in suffern gives lessons.

ik blalaba why should i have the patience for lessons? but really i have a wish one day to learn because what can u really do with music by ear? i wanted to play soooooo badly for my concert and after concert was over i was able to figure every single song, but inorder to know beats and everything u have to be able to read notes.

think first- alto music gives lesson? i never knew that what i really want though is a lady or girl who comes to your house or you go there. Do they have women teachers?

I play entirely by ear (oh, by the way, everyone who partook in the thread “Saxophone or Clarinet”, I chose saxophone!).

My brother plays at simchos, including weddings, and he can’t read notes either.

I play the flute, where there aren’t any chords

Dont tell me… you even play the flute by ‘air’…!!!! ☺

Shticky Guy: Yep… I’m just talented that way.

And DON’T do it by Alto Music! The teachers aren’t Jewish, which can be a problem for yamim tovim (though they’re great teachers) and the guy in charge REFUSES to reschedule lessons. It’s an enormous pain in the neck.

I speak from experience, though; I take flute lessons there and I have a great teacher, but the scheduling’s a mess.

Yes, I play flute by ear/air.

I can read notes, however I rarely do.

I play piano and guitar by ear, and there is nothing wrong with that. I took lessons since I was five, but found I was playing the pieces just by hearing the teacher play it first. I can still read music, and it is worth getting the lessons (and having a teacher who does not give you music tapes).

I play guitar by ear. Though I know that reading notes can help in terms of playing live and in coordination with a band, I really don’t need to for myself. If there’s a piece I really want to learn and not spend the time to figure it out by ear, I’ll look up the chords or tablature. Every musical composition I’ve came up with has been completely by just putting pieces together that sound good in my head. So if you are just playing for yourself, I don’t see a need a to learn notes, unless you really want to and have the time.

I can blow my own trumpet. By air of course. I can also play the piano by ear. I even enjoy fiddling with my peyos…
