Just posting to say please take care in the impending hurricane! I hope everyone has a safe place to wait it out.
Amein to that. I am nervous as we are in a coastal neighborhood. But I also really do not want to leave. last time, it waserev Shabbos, and we had no breirah to take a chance. But now we are watching and waiting to see how things develo

one of my kids schools dont want to tell us if thyere giving off- we have to call in the morning!!! all my others are dancing around and that one is left out!!! i hope alll schools come to their senses and give off!
but in queens its not even raining… so i dont know if theyr rlly guna giv off
EVERYONE PLEASE BE SAFE! Hashem should guard us all from harm.
The MTA shut down the trains as of 7 PM and buses will stop running at 9 PM. I don’t think anyone is going anywhere. Public schools are also closed, which means there is no public school busing tranportation. It’s a pretty safe bet to guess, there is no school tomorrow.
Last thing the city wants, is for people to be driving around.
aurora77, only tiny bits of Manhattan are supposed to evacuate. Nevertheless, I suspect that the evacuation centers aren’t spacious enough to accommodate those who are supposed to evacuate from other areas. I assume people only go to those centers if they don’t have friends or relatives on higher ground who can take them.
I’m in an evacuation zone, but I’m far enough from the water that I’m not terribly worried. I believe most of the people on my block are also staying put. A local shul sent out an email that they’ll have two minyanim tomorrow morning, and the mikvah sent an email saying they have a generator and will stay open as usual.
It’s still scary. Last time I remember a real hurricane it was erev succos time (might have been erev Shabbos, a couple fo days before Succos). I recall staying at my parents’ home after picking up the lulavim and esrogim for my husband and son, and then racing to get there during a horrific rain, which suddenly stopped, the sun came out, and we had an “eye” of sunshine and calm for about 20 minutes, during which time we ran back quickly to check on our apartment, and then get back to my folks.
yay! now all the kids are off!! I x know if the child is happier or I am now that hes included in the fun!

The issue is not necessarily the rain, it’s the sustained winds. It’s not a matter of hours, it’s a matter of DAYS. Even sturdy trees may not survive a day or two of 50+ MPH winds.
As of now our business is not closed, so its work as usual. Should there be any change in the weather we will all rush home!
This is the time that I am happy to drive this monster gas guzzling 4×4 SUV. Lets see if all the money spent on gas was worth it!
I am amazed that some live in a mandatory evacuation area and have not left.
Imagine if you are stuck and need to be resued. What a Chilul Hashem that would be and then some would claim Anti-Semitism when they werent rescued first.
You are potentially causing harm to others if they must rescue you

Aurora77 YOu are amazing!!! I’m from Deal,nj thank you!! your so nice…im not really worried…..I never usually get worried by these things and nothing ends up happening…its a BIG rain storm…lived through rain hopefully Hashem will take care of me through BIG rains…
And im in deal and did not evacuate…nor did anyone else around me… which makes me “not worry” even more
I’m in Far Rockaway. We had almost as many people as usual at our Daf Yomi shiur this morning even though we’re all supposed to be evacuated. Somebody in shul was talking about Hurricane Donna in 1960 when the entire peninsula was under water (check out “Hurricane Donna Hits the Rockaways” on Youtube). We’re going to keep an eye on the conditions and make a decision later today. Last night at around 7:00 I was heading home from Queens and there was very little traffic in either direction.
here in maryland it’s raining pretty hard and winds are not too bad (but not perfect either!:) we are supposed to have sustained winds later today @ 35 to 40 MPH with some gusts @ 70!!! But we have hashem and there is nothing to worry about!!!
2centd, shelters were set up. In some NJ towns, people refusing to evacuate are being asked to sign releases acknowledging that first-responders will not respond to a 911 call.
oomis, that was gloria in 86. It was a friday with succot on sunday night. We were in the beach area of Far Rock, and we the new car and new kids to higher ground on LI. The storms eye passed through LI, and there were some very tired tropical birds falling out of the sky. We headed home for shabbos, threading our way through a maze of downed maple trees in the Five towns. Many succot were trashed, including some of the big shul succot that were reduced to splinters. Back in my tv watching days, there was Camille. In New Orleans they were holding hurricane parties on the bay, and in the aftermath, they had to pick 200 or so bodies out of the trees that still stood. I was up in the Catskills at the time, and there was sideways sheets of rain like I never saw, and ancient huge pine trees bending like silly putty (remember silly putty?)
