I actually have cut white flour bread from my diet for now, (I do have a small piece on Shabbos, but we also like to eat whole wheat challah, so it is less of a problem). I eat no refined or simple carbs. And I mostly am staying away from fruit, though I like to have purple grapes on Shabbos. Colorful vegetables are the key, for the most part in having healthy complex carbs. And anything cruciferous like broccoli or cauliflower, is low in carbs and high in fiber and really good for the cholesterol, too.

just noticed ur post now. thanx for ur advice! so are u saying that excercise that results in muscle buildup is NOT good? im on a number of meds…mainly metformin then tiny doses of other stuff just to help everything work together. i really hope these wont be for life…it would be great to get off of them. any other advice you could offer about the way you eat and how u changed ur eating habits and how you really STUCK to them. (even wehn it was really tough) would be greatly appreciated. also ideas for foods would be welcome.

    thanx!

ilovetheholyland, just checking up on you… how are you doing? How is it all going?

“just curious, did you/do you have the same thing or are you just nice like that?” Look at the diabetes thread for the answer 😉 i struggle with weight too and i know how difficult it is to be fussy (sigh). And yes, i do care in my own little way.

    hey princess,

ur really nice. i dont usually look at the diabetes thread for fear of what may happen c”v, but i guess i should check it out. (even if not for me, i can sympathize with others!) basically, i went to my dr. last week and he was really pleased with the way things are going. i lost some more weight since the last time i was there, and he’s happy with my progress b”h. so yay! no liquid diet thing! (as of now…) thanx for caring!

Aries, I have been drinking Glucerna, but I would be interested in the Slim Fast low carb shake you mentioned. Could you find out a) calorie count and b) how many grams of sugar and carbs (before the fiber is deducted)?

I have lost about the same amount as you, and I know how hard that was, so yasher koach.

    #881696

ilovetheholyland, thanks! (I think!) i understand why you don’t want to look on the diabetes thread. If you do you’ll meet others who really do care! and yes, some of us really do understand weight too .

WELL DONE!!!!!! for losing, i’m sooo happy to hear!!!!! KEEP GOING STRONG!

    hey princess,

i skimmed through the diabetes thread and to be honest with you, it made me feel kinda stupid that i ever put up a thread called “prediabetics.” i mean, here you all are, dealing with so much more and all i can find to complain about is my stupid borderline bloodtest results!!!! but it made me appreciate all your kind words and encouragement so much more! thanx for everything and good luck with it all! you are in my prayers!

    #881698

    hey ilovetheholyland,

There’s really no need AT ALL to feel stupid, after all diabetes is exactly what you were afraid of! About the “dealing with more” i think that no matter what a person is given to “deal” with in life, he is also given the EXACT amount of tools he needs to be able to (or not to!) deal with it, and therefore there can be no such thing as “more” or “less” … that’s just my take!

For me, i have to watch my food / weight for the diabetes control and it really is tough, esp. so being fussy! So yes, i do understand, in my own little way, where you’re coming from in this matter .. I really appreciate your kind words and keeping me in prayers, it does go both ways!

Keep going strong, you are really amazing 😉 May hashem bless us with the RIGHT one in the RIGHT time and may that be soon enough!

just a p.s. – finally took everything to my pcp today and he had his own take on the whole thing….he referred me to some other dr. way out in who knows where that my mom is interested in taking me to….well, we shall see.

oomis1105 – CONGRATS on losing weight too! ‘

Thanks, Princess. I just read this now. I am working really hard at it (though I fell off the wagon a bit on Chanukah). I need to watch the weight because of the sugar.

Prediabetics – you CAN reverse the course of the disease, it is NOT inevitable if you take steps now to rpevent it. PLEASE do whatever you have to do. You will thank yourself later.

I take medication, but my doc was so happy with my Hemoglobin

A1c, that he cut me down to half a dose, B”H. The weight loss, of course is the first line of defense. As soon as I got serious about lowering my carb intake to only complex carbs, there was an immediate change. Everyone keep up the good work, and keep the numbers down.

ilovetheholyland, i’m soo glad you’re away from that catergy now!! Oomis – WELL DONE!!!!!! How did you manage to get the weight off/ to keep up with low carbs? It’s esp. difficult when you’re a fussy eater!

Thanks for the chizuk. It is not easy for me, as even when I was watching my weight NOT for diabetic reasons, by eating low-calorie and low-fat healthy foods, I was still eating a lot of fruit, controlled portions of pasta, etc. and I cannot eat much of that now because I have to watch my sugar count. SOOOOOO, I am primarily eating controlled amounts of low glycemic index complex carbs,i.e., sweet potato rather than white potato, brown rice, not white, whole wheat bread (I save my whole wheat consumption for challah on Shabbos, and get 100% whole wheat). These little changes have added up to a BIG change for me. I look better, feel better, the sugar is stablizing, and I can walk much better as well.

I am also drinking plenty of water, eating a lot of salads or steamed green vegetables and low-fat proteins, including plain fat-free Greek yogurt with some fresh blueberries or a little Splenda, chicken, and fish. When you cut down your food intake, after a few weeks, you really cannot eat the way you used to. The body doesn’t want as much food as it used to take in. I am satisfied with much less, and I no longer crave certain food items that were bad for me, like fried chicken or pizza. I really did not believe that would ever happen, but it did. B”H for that.

What helps the most is the support I get from my family and friends who constantly remind me how great I am doing. It gives me tremendous chizuk. I had to do something to prevent myself from succumbing to the various conditions that diabetes can cause. If anyone here is pre-diabetic, please take my words to heart, get checked out by your doctor, and proactively take steps to try to reverse the condition through diet changes and exercise (even just walking every day). Very often it can be done. I am hoping to reverse my actual Type 2 diabetes.

    hey!

ltns! so theres been a major weight improvement bh. i also finally got my foods down pat and i hardly EVER eat starches anymore. (its really much easier then i thought it would be…) but there are some other medical issues that have cropped up. had a procedure done and pcp sent me to a specialist, going at the end of this week ih. (hope and pray that i dont need surgery!!!) thanx for askin! whats doin with you?

    #881718

Hey ilovetheholyland, right about the ltns!! I’m so glad to hear about the weight improvement!! It’s just so tough to lose it!!!!! WELL DONE!!!!!! how did you manage it!?

Seeing that it’s the end of the week now – how was the procedure? i hope you don’t need surgery!!!! Btw how long have you been struggling with pre diabetes?! Hope you’re okay!!!!

    hey princess,

so i gotta thank my mom BIG TIME for the weight loss. i know im spoiled, but she does ALL my food prep for me and without her help, it would NOT be possible. i also started excercising much more then i used to. the procedure was b”h okay and i dont need surgery as of now. the specialist put me on ANOTHER medication, and were hoping that will do the trick and there wont be any need for surgery. i’ve been struggling with pre-diabetes for over a year, but hopefully now with the weight loss, my #’s will be better! 🙂 what about u? how u doin?

    #881720

Hey ilovetheholyland! So glad to hear about the lack of surgery – how’s the new medication working? Isn’t it difficult for you to take it?!!!!!! That’s really amazing about the weight loss, yup, my mum is also amazing like that! But somehow i cant seem to keep it off!! Being fussy and having a sweet tooth 😉 so my weight goes up and down, and it’s dreadful!!

    Hope you’re okay!!!!!!!!!

Please people!! get off the drugs!!! if its Pre Type 2 and controllable. diet and excercise work ten times better than the drugs. and when you say you made changes those are great, but NO flour at all, and that means shabbos, (until your sugar is really stabalized) take a bite of matza. and no sweet potatoes either. when you get ALL sugar out of your system (even fruit) you can begin to rebound. You can have berries and NO SPLENDA not ever. not today, not a bit, not a taste, it is terrible for you. (get stevia or raw honey. Raw Honey should be your sweetener of choice. and yes you dont wnat to starve so you have to FEED your body with fats, yes you heard me right, fats. Meat and chicken and fish, cooked in good old fashioned shmaltz (made yoruself not with BHT) and olive oil. the fats keep you satieated. dairy fats such as whole milk, cheese and cream, and the biggest fix for prediabetics is to BUILD MUSCLE> you might be wroking out and doing all the wrong things. you need to specifically BUILD MUSCLE> thats your best defense in my opinion. and brisk walking can bring your sugar down faster and better than any drug. (im speaking about metabolic related pre diabetic type 2) now if you have a heridetary predispositon to type 2 you may have more of a battle ahead of you. this advice is if you got your own self into this mess by your food choices. (yes I am one of you!! not judging)

    hey princess!

how ya doin? b”h no surgery needed now, and it is difficult to be on meds, but BARUCH HASHEM they are doing the job!!!! it should be my worst problem, amen! good luck with the sweet tooth on purim! thinkin of you!

rc, your ideas are really good, especially the one about building muscle. my dr. told me that to. but just keep in mind that everyones body makeup is different. what works for you wouldnt necessarily work for someone else….but thanks for all your advice!

    #881723

ilovetheholyland! Hey right back!!! how are you doing?? I’m sooo glad you don’t need the surgery!!! And i def. empathize with taking meds, i know how difficult that can be. Do you get side effects from it? What’s the meds for – ? Hope you’re doing okay!!!! Thinking of ya too!

Rc – it must have been very difficult to make all those changes – congrats to you!

princess! how ya doin? so i didnt get any side effects b”h till recently…. i get very bloated from one of my meds and i gotta talk to my dr. about it cuz its really uncomfortable 🙁 but otherwise, b”h everythings good! and my dr. said that maybe soon i’ll be able to get off most of my meds! yay! 🙂 meds are for sugars, and certain high levels of something that i have….hard to explain….thanx also for your post on my other thread. you really have a way with words, its great!

    #881725

ilovetheholyland! How ya doing?!! i’m soo sorry about the side effects, that’s dreadful! Did you manage to talk to your doctor? I know how difficult it can be to have to take a medication and KNOW that you’re going to have side effect ;( 🙁 . Okay, sounds interesting what you don’t want to explain, i hope it gets ALL better REAL quickly.

Thanks!!! I love to write…that’s my way of expression 😉 i hope all goes well, shidduchim and otherwise!

    1) MAZAL TOV ilovetheholyland!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have been taken to the mazal tov thread (courtesy of kapusta)

    2) Looks to be I might be “joining the club” /:

Question for y’all: would any of you know whether sugars affect acid in the body? If yes how?

    thanks yossi!

sorry, dont know the answer to your question but i do know that prediabeties is NOT necessarily a club you have to join… and if you’ve already joined, it DOES NOT need to be long term!!!! if you do what your supposed to (ie, diet and excersize…) you can drastically change ur levels….i do know also that its REALLY REALLY tough and easier said than done and all that, but b”h i’ve been there and done that and now off ALL my meds b”h! good luck with everything… and any questions, you know where to go!

p.s. princess, where you hiding out???
