I recently noticed the prices of a few magazines that are often read by Chareidim:

$8 for one copy of Mishpacha magazine.
$8 for one copy of Ami magazine.
$7 for one copy of Binah magazine.
$7 for one copy of HaModia.

Because these prices are very high [in my opinion,
    compared to the 1980s & 1990s], I suggest that
instead of throwing them in the garbage when you are finished,
you should instead give them to a friend,
or to a neighbor, or even to a local minyan or Bikur Cholim.

In other words, I am suggesting that we avoid waste.

I am also suggesting a chesed that costs nothing.

Last but not least, I suggest that all newspapers and magazines
be recycled properly, along with other papers.

    Thank you.

I love chesed and sharing whatever I have with others. I want to present a theoretical point: Suppose in your city, only one person buys Mishpacha and manages to share it with all the yidden of your city. And suppose the same takes place everywhere, namely, due to the “high cost” of the Jewish magazine, only one appointed Yid buys one issue of the magazine, and it is shared by the entire kehillah. How do you think that will affect the business of the magazine? Either they will go out of business, or they will need to multiply the charge for the single issue that was bought! Magazines rely heavily on the income from subscribers and purchasers. If everyone is accessing the magazine from a “free edition” that is being generously passed around, the magazine goes bankrupt. The Jewish magazines are yiddishe businesses, run by fellow yidden trying to make a living while providing a wonderful service. They employ many yidden who rely on the magazine for their livelihood. To circumvent the income from the magazine by doing a wonderful chesed of sharing it with others may harm other yidden. If someone wants to share the magazine with others (say, hang up the magazine on the shul bulletin board so all can read it for free), maybe the magazine needs to be compensated for the lost revenue you cause by being a do-gooder.

The prices for “Chareidi” magazines are completely in line with the prices for secular magazines, such as Time magazine, Reader’s Digest, Sports Illustrated, etc. Did you check the prices for individual copies of popular secular magazines?! And the frum magazines have a much lower consumer/readership base, which automatically raises the price to cover expenses. Yes, 30 or 40 years ago, the prices for magazines were much lower than what they charge today, like everything else. The frum publications are not gouging the consumers (as insinuated).

Mishpacha and Ami should not be in any Jewish home. It is full of absolute goyish trash.

All printed products are becoming very expensive, probably since falling demand is resulting in higher costs per issue produced (e.g. if a printing press is only able to find less than full time work, and the shrinking number of printers means higher wages, there is no way to avoid inflation). For printed magazines to be read on Shabbos, but for non-Shabbos use, a switch to online forms (either via a website, or by downloading a pdf to be read offline) will result in a major decrease in costs.

Actually, magazines survive on ad sales, not subscriptions. The weekly free frum newspapers base their ad rates on the number of papers delivered.
Years ago I had a weekend subscription to Long Island Newsday. I suddenly started receiving Thursday’s edition.
When I called I was told that Thursday’s paper had tons of shopping circulars and so they were delivering Thursday’s paper for free to all weekend subscribers to boost their circulation and advertising rates

I would not mind paying a price for a magazine that has contents to offer. But Mishpacha? It is a piece of journalistic garbage with very little articles of interest to a frum shomer Shabbos reader. A very disappointing trashy periodical. An issue of Mishpacha should not exceed three dollars. With 38 pp of advertisements before you get to the meat of the magazine and additional advertisements throughout, the owners are enriching them selves on the backs of the subscribers. I have asked my wife to cancel however she refuses to.

Mishpacha is not worthwhile reading and is therefore overpriced.

I find that the 30 round magpul 5.56 go on sale at reasonable prices from time to time. For Glock I’d suggest buying quality off-brand.

laws of lashon hara include making someone lose income.

R Moshe was shown a sefer that was dedicated to dismantling psakim of R Moshe and it was suggested that R Moshe writes a rebuttal. He refused, saying that then the author of sefer will lose his income from selling it.

If you think $8 is high, try Canadian $11 – $12.
