What are the pros and cons of seatbelts? I know the general consensus is that they save lives but I heard of a lot of people who got injured by them. Does anyone have any real data that isn’t manufacturer sponsored that shows that seatbelts really help anyone? What was your experience?

the biggest con is the discomfort. Also that some idiots in government made it required.

Invaluable for tying up annoying younger brothers on road trips. Trust me.

Someone died because of seatbelts. He fell asleep in the back seat wearing seatbelts in the winter, the car skidded when hit by another car, made a short stop, and the seatbelts choked him.

Seatbelts save lives but they make your driving trip uncomfortable and the need to tie yourself and your family up each time you get in the car

One con by not wearing it is that you can become a projectile during a bad short stop or accident and in the process hurting others and yourself in the process.this of course only one scanerio of 100’s.

From the US DOT -“In 2015, the use of seat belts in passenger vehicles saved
an estimated 13,941 lives of occupants 5 and older, etc.”

I’m a statistic. I was riding in the passenger front seat when a car came out from behind a parked truck and hit us square on the side midway between the front and back doors. If I hadn’t been wearing a seatbelt I would have been thrown straight through the windshield.

The very few times that seatbelts contribute to a death are reported because they’re wild exceptions to the rule. Who would clock on a link saying, “Seatbelts saved 26 lives in the US last week?”

A big con to seatbelts is they increase the wait for those waiting for an organ.
Car accidents are a great source of organs from otherwise healthy individuals who now no longer need them. But due to seat belts and laws requiring there use more people survive car accidents thus decreasing the availability of heLrhy organs.
The same is sadly true f motorcycle helmets
