Is being quiet the same or different as being shy? I read all these social anxiety self-help thingamajigs and I have so many of the characteristics but I’m not shy (scared of people) at all: I’d just rather be alone.
Is shyness and quietness the same thing?
April 10, 2011 7:16 pm at 7:16 pm #768940StuffedCabbageParticipantmaybe your just introverted….like you would rather spend your time by yourself doing what you like than with other people….i know tonz of people like that and there all not shy at all…..

FWIW, IMHO, shy people tend to be quiet. However, not all quiet people are shy.

April 10, 2011 8:25 pm at 8:25 pm #768945chocandpatienceMemberI’m quiet and I don’t find it easy initiating conversations with people I don’t know. (One of the reasons I like the CR is that it isn’t face-to-face). I also prefer spending time alone, rather than in crowds. I wouldn’t call myself shy, though.
Wolf: I don’t think non-usage of hand sanitisers is any indication of shyness.
April 10, 2011 8:31 pm at 8:31 pm #768946HaLeiViParticipantI’m usually considered a quiet person. I am not afraid of people, but I still am shy.
April 10, 2011 8:43 pm at 8:43 pm #768947eclipseMemberI’m close with a lot of quiet people. They’re smart ’cause they listen more than talk!

A quiet person doesn’t make noise?

May 22, 2011 1:37 pm at 1:37 pm #768951wallflowerParticipantEclipse: What does that mean, “they’re smart because they listen more than they talk”?
May 22, 2011 10:54 pm at 10:54 pm #768952cucumberMemberit is better social skills to listen more than talk. If you would read Dale Carnegies book How To Make Friends and Influence People, you will see this is a very common thread in there. Like he says no one is really interested in what you have to say they are interested in what they have to say. So if you listen to others with real interest you will make them like you. And of course if you listen to other people you will learn alot more than if you spend all your time talking- in which case you will not learn anything at all. So quiet people can often seem alot smarter than other people because they know so much more.
