The website was recommended to me by many of my friends, however I don’t understand why. The websites support has been extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. As a free user they don’t allow me to remove my current shadchan to switch to another.

Has anyone else had similar issues? Does anyone have any contacts who can help me?

It’s a very good site, with many single of all areas and across the Jewish spectrum. Yes, those who pay do get better service and better benefits. If that weren’t the case, than why charge membership at all?

Please realize that although it does a “Chesed”, it still has costs to maintain the site and the like.

I would recommend paying on a trial basis for 1-3 months and then see how your feel about these issues.

Worse comes to worse view your trial payment as Tzedaka (someone does benefit) and in the zchus you pay and help someone else, you should find your bashert iyH.

    Hope this helped!

Jdeals.com has an offer for a three month membership to Saw you at Sinai for $22.42 (half price).

It makes no sense. A few years ago, someone asked me to sign up, because they were going to accelerate his shadchan membership if he got guys to sign up, because they have not enough guys.

So I said, if you don’t have enough guys, you should be giving the guys incentives–not the idiot who signs them up. The site should be free for guys.

Of course (pardon the pun). I was poking fun at the notion that the shidduch crisis (the gender disparity part) is a product of the old fashioned shidduch process, when it’s in fact a product of demographics.

    Don’t you understand anything….

It’s because all the young women on SYAS are looking for long term kollel guys and there just aren’t enough kollel guys around for all the young women on SYAS.

If only the Bais Yackov’s would teach the girls that it’s okay to marry a guy who aren’t sitting in kollel forever then SYAS would have plenty of guys…

But everyone knows that SYAS is for girls looking for long term learners, so there’s just not enough guys to go around….

If only the yeshivos would do a better job of producing more quaility bnei torah, then SYAS would have more guys.

But everyone knows that only real serious long term learners sign up for SYAS, hence there’s a shortage of guys.

AZ, ehrre did you get that from? I was under the impression that long term learners stay away from SYAS because it is “the Internet”.

I think the problem is that people consider SYAS a sort of last resort and won’t even sign up for it until they’ve been in shidduchim for awhile (I assume this is the Internet stigma or just the stigma of not dating in the “classic” fashion). Girls feel “old” sooner than boys so therefore the group of boys on the SYAS island is much smaller in number and older in age so the shidduchim being made have the same age gap problem as classic shidduchim.

Older (in age) [as opposed to older in shoe size?] makes sense, but I would think that the numbers should still be the same unless there was a an overall numbers disparity.

what? no way… no money… if someone signs up with a shadchan for the Israel scene because that’s where he is… and then later moves to the US … I think its pretty fair that he should be able to switch shadchanim… and if the shidduch works then then shadchan gets a nice chunk of reward money…. i don’t see any chesed from SYAS because all the real work is done by the shadchanim….

So, don’t sign up. Look for a new shadchan elsewhere. Plenty of them not affiliated with SYAS. Issue solved.

    #934467

OOOOOOH! Thanks for this thread! An opportunity to sing the praises of SYAS! 🙂 One of the blessings that the internet brought about, B”H, when used properly, together with other sites like Torahanytime.

I will preface this by saying that I made a number of Shidduchim on SYAS, with my Shadchanus fees ranging from a Silverplate gift that costed about $100, that I got from a BT couple, to $2,000 total, from Heimish people. I was equally thrilled with all the Shidduchim I’ve made, whether I got Silverplate or Dollar$. I would imagine that my reward from upstairs was the same.

Non paying members get matched once a week, at most, and, true, they dont have the option of choosing a Matchmaker. Singles must become members if they want to accept a match.

The cost of membership is so ridiculously low, that its a non-issue.

I dont know what AZ was trying to say with his nonsense about BY girls and Kollel guys, but SYAS has a very wide range of members of varying frumkeit levels, as is the case with Shadchanim in general, throughout the world.

So don’t call it a chessed on behalf of SYAS, call it a service on behalf of SYAS, and a chessed on behalf of SYAS shadchannim. What’s the difference? Also, shadchanim don’t usually charge on a per month basis anyway, and are traditionally much more expensive than SYAS costs. It’s your choice, I don’t see what the issue is.

I was a member on SYAS for while, but they had weird rules.

But I also was on Frumster now known as JWed, as well as Orthodate, where I ended up being Zoche to have met & married my spouse.

Chessed or service. Call it what you want. Whatever it is, it cost them money to run. The shadchanim work there for free and should be paid by the couple upon a successful shiduch just like any other shadchan.

The mitzius is that people won’t pay for something if they can get it for free, hence the restrictions on free accounts, it is just a trial, if you like it, sign up for the paid version.

Think of it as a singles weekend where you have to pay, you are paying to cover the cost of the event, not the shadchanim.

It happens to be a great service and I think it would be great for the “shidduch crisis” if ALL singles signed up so that the shadchanim on the site can have more of a choice to choose from. (We’ll leave it to AZ to tell us at what age each gender should join).

    Hello AZ!

Nice to hear from you, cuz i was trying to contact you on a “NASI” CR thread, at the same time you were posting here, and couldn’t find a response! So I”ll try posting my question here; hope it’s not too “off topic” to find a place in this thread-

    How are things with NASI?

Has the number of shidduchim accomplished in the new program gone above zero?

I have to admit I found your post about SYAS a bit confusing, but a simple yes or no in response would suffice.

With NASI- B”H very well. Much much progress has been made in many areads and a real implementable solution is in sight and in reach.

    New Program-No

I apologize if you and MSS didn’t understand what I wrote about SYAS. Clearly one needs to understand the AGE GAP concept in order to understand that line.

It might help SYAS numbers. as for whether it will help overall….

The available men have plenty of dating opportunites and by getting more of them on SYAS that will accomplish that they will have more opportunites.

if you think that the opportunities via SYAS are more likely to result in a shidduch then their other opportunites then it would be helpful if you would have more men on the site.

If the opportunities via SYAS are no more likely to result in a shidduch then the many other opportunites they have then it’s not really helpfull in the big picture.

I personally have no data and thus no opinion as to whether it will or won’t be helpful.

    Pictures? You like pictures?

Please forward your email address, so I can happily send you lots of pictures of the L’Chayims from Shidduchim Ive made on SYAS (having never had a discussion about dowry btw!). They might not all admit to friends and relatives that thats how the Shidduch happened though.

Pictures you want? Not a problem.

Hee hee. Oy, Im laughing like a hyena again.

    Sponsoring the dowry would help.

If the girls dowry is sponsored it would help the individual girl. But it wouldn’t enable a larger number of girls to get married.

SYAS looks to be a very good site but on the other hand out of 265 “matchmakers” you can only choose 26 of them!

The reason for that is all the others are not accepting new members!!

Looks like a scam to me!

Ps. I am talking about paying members not free accounts.

Just because they are “not accepting new members” doesn’t mean they won’t search for you. It just means that they are full and aren’t obligating themselves to you.

You choose 2 matchmakers, those matchmakers are obligated to search for you once a week or something (otherwise they get kicked off the site, I’m not sure the rules exactly).

But any matchmaker can do a search and suggest shidduchim for you if they want.

And you will come up in their searches when they are working on others (if a matchmaker does a search for a boy, your profile might come up as a possible match based on the database’s algorithm and then the shadchan can suggest the match whether you are “in their network” or not).

Bottom line, sign up and see what happens. It’s not a scam.
