I always enjoyed the sefira tapes as I need it calm my nerves. Lately I’ve been by a shiur where the rov said that it is not permitted.

My question is does anyone know of a Rav that is matir?

Instead of looking for a Rav who will be lenient upon whom to hang your hat, why not look for a Rav whom you respect and to whom you can ask various sha’ailos that come up?

You should ask a personal shaila, since the fact that you need it to calm your nerves may be a reason to be matir certain types of music for you.

“sefira tapes… the rov said that it is not permitted”

Some rabbonim hold that while the recording may not include actual music, the tape/cd player is a cli zemer when playing simulated music.

I heard its technically ok but its not in the spirit of the law. The whole pt of no music is to feel the loss of R’Akivas students so if the sefira music makes you upbeat then it doesnt seem right to listen to it.

    “Rav Moshe”

Interesting, Rav Moshe wants to know who permitted listening to music any time during the year. See Orach Chaim, Siman Tav Kuf Samech, Sif Gimmel.

The chiluk is that singing w/o musical instruments is different than with musical instruments, it’s the same as singing shabbos zmiros

I believe mbachur is referring to the teshuva which was quoted in this related thread:

I found a year-old thread on this. I had seen this p’sak from R’ Belsky, which Feif Un quotes here, but didn’t know where to find it; I’ll post the link.

    Thanks Daas,

I’m starting to have my hunches that you’re a mod if not going to be in the near future

    mbachur,

No, and no. I’m curious what led you to that idea, though.

“The chiluk is that singing w/o musical instruments is different than with musical instruments, it’s the same as singing shabbos zmiros”

So, again, R’ Moshe asks, who permitted music (as we know it – not acapella) the entire year. Perhaps we should be listening to acapella the entire year. To imply that the music we listen to all year is not problematic and the only thing under discussion is acapella during sefira and then imply R’ moshe agrees with this as well, doesnt seem correct from what I know of the teshuva. R’ Moshe still asks who permitted listening to music the entire year.

The Mishne Brura in sif kattan yud gimmel quoting the Bach is pretty clear about this too, unless you have a different understanding of this mishna berura/bach.

See the mishna berura in sif kattan yud daled and tes vav. I’m not so sure. Certainly a lot of the music that is sold does not fit this.

Just adding on to this topic, This year I bought a sefira tape that was recommended to me, as i usually don’t buy for sefira cuz if its imitating music then whats the point?

Anyway this one (called kumzits in the rain) is very nice. Its just singing and harmony, no beats or any imitation of music whatsoever, and they are all slow songs that just get you in the sefira mood.

the ones with voices acting as musical instruments, if you read my post carefully you would see I’m referring to just singing

Mbachur. I wouldn’t want to incur your wrath seeing that you killed a mountain lion with your bare hands 🙂

Nevertheless, I think the MB/Bach take issue with “just singing” if just for enjoyment (see what they say about those singing while going about their work).

I suppose it also depends on your definition of “shiros visishbachos”. If you are “just singing” and waving your hands wildly in the air, is that the shiros visishbachos the Bach/MB had in mind?
