The uniform is pretty chill. You need to wear a button-down shirt with a collar, and color/pattern. Officially only solid dark color sweaters/shirts over that, but at a certain point in the year nobody cares any more. Dark pleated skirts, short or long (although if your skirt’s too short you will probably get “skirted”), any shoes. They don’t care about your makeup or jewelry.

Electronics: reaaalllly strict. Anybody found with a smartphone/iPod touch etc. is in major trouble.

Curfew: officially 10:15 but if you need late curfew you just call an aim habayit and ask. They’ll usually give you till 12 depending on your reputation/the reason/which aim habayit you’re talking to. In the beginning of the year they are really into curfew but at a certain point it’s pretty much a free-for-all.

Dorm: on a scale of 1-10 I’d put the conditions at a 6. You learn to live with it. 3 floors, not including the ground floor where the kitchen and lounge/library is. Always enough showers/bathrooms which is a big plus. 4-6 girls a room, each girl gets a filing cabinet and a big drawer for their stuff. Bunkbeds. There is a lounge/library downstairs where you can chill and there are hammocks on the roof, which is cool. The food is awesome and insanely fattening.

Any blouse and pleated black skirt. You can wear colored sweaters as far as I remember (I did)

Electronics: kosher phone only. And cameras… no internet devices if that’s what your asking. No internet ipods ok. No computers… if you follow the rules you’ll be ok:)

curfew is 10:15, but attempt to get extensions as often as possible 🙂 🙂

Dorm: everyone is in same sleeping dorm. Bottom floor is computers, dining room, living room? (couches and piano) and laundry room. Then three floors above that for sleeping.

    have a fun year!

hashtag every year is different re stringency in uniform rules – last year nobody cared what color/pattern sweater you were wearing and everybody showed up in slinky skirts. then at the end of the year they cracked down. it depends on the staffs’ individual and collective moods.

the dorms are really not that bad as dorms go, at first I was kinda scarred cuz the rooms are pretty cramped and i didn’t have space for my stuff, but you really can get used to anything. It’s very clean – they have an ozeret every day – which is a big plus. always enough showers/bathrooms. and regarding the clothes everyone’s different; personally i can’t stand blouses so i changed every day after class. there’s lots of free time (no night classes) so bring tons of ordinary clothes. and however many clothes you think you’re gonna need, pack double. you’re gonna be wearing the same stuff for a whole year and you’ll see how sick of them you get. Shabbos clothes also – people tell you you don’t need so many – THIS IS A LIE.

So not! Kayla1994, you talk like you were there in 1994,you’re not updated at all..I was just in Seminar and the dorm is gorgeous. They have a student lounge on each floor, so there’s always someplace to go, with couches and computer/printer . There’s a separate computer room on the main floor with email access, no internet access anywhere, and a gorgeous lounge and library on the dining room floor. A very nice piano, I play, so I ought to know.

Also they renovated the dorm and made new bathrooms and showers, gorgeous..there’s always hot water, most dorms have only a few hours a day.

My sister said they’re installing a/c in the dorms now.

The place is spotless, they clean it all the time.

And they have a lot of work so there’s not that much free time, but the pressure’s not bad, except of course, certain times of year.

They got pretty strict on the dress code and other stuff, not sure what you’re talking about that they forget, they really don’t.

The staff is always there for you, really amazing.

Our teachers are the Guest Speakers in other seminaries.

They’re having a great year, I visited recently, and it was so great to see Mrs. Flam and Mrs. Weichleder and all the others. I actually went twice so I could see everyone.

They really care and it’s the best place.

You’ll have a great year, and really take it with you. Good luck If you have any other questions, I’ll gladly answer.

Oh and I forgot about the Shabbatonim..They are beyond. They just went on a SHabbaton (my sisters there now) and they were there from Thursday, it was gorgeous and the girls had an amazing time.theyre very generous..with everything,

Cis – mm hm…it’s all a matter of opinion. I honestly did not mean to come off as negative; it is a great place. But those are my opinions on the dorm conditions 🙂

“They got pretty strict on the dress code and other stuff, not sure what you’re talking about that they forget, they really don’t.”

What I meant was that in the beginning of the year they are pretty strict about a lot of stuff and as the year goes on they let a lot of thing slide. At least in my year that’s what happened.

do they keep there dorms open for every Shabbos?

also is there a lot of work/pressure?

    #1049454

Yes, the dorm is open every Shabbos!! (in the weeks that people want to stay, which is usually)

They will also place you if you want to leave and don’t have where to go.

There is a nice amount of work, but not a lot of pressure, meaning, some times there could be more pressure, just because of deadlines but not because the school puts pressure.

Also the schedule is very worked out so they take into consideration when they make deadlines it shouldn’t be the day after a shabbaton etc…

I don’t know. There were a few girls who worked with a tutor because their skills were lacking. But it is academic and there is a lot of work. You’ll have to wait for your interview and hope for the best…

I have a few friends who went there. The school does not allow you to wear denim while you are there for seminary, but some girls when they come back start wearing denim skirts again. The hashkafa is similar to ateres but there are no hair rules from what I can recall. Some girls sneak in phones that are not kosher. Typically, these phones are text phones that slide as opposed to blackberrys/ iphones/ androids. They have an email service in the dorm that you have to pay $40 to use.

The most important thing in searching for a seminary/ being prepared for the interviews is to try to speak to girls who went there a few years ago (like your seniors when you were freshman in hs) and also speak to a girl who is there now. Yes, every year is different but when choosing a seminary, you are trying to grow in a way that the growth should stay with you for a long time. Also, try to come up with at least five questions to ask whoever is interviewing you. The way that they answer your questions will be a key factor in determining if you get accepted if you should go there. I asked the person who interviewed me for a seminary a question and his reaction was not so great. I got accepted so I went, but I ended up leaving because I did not notice any of the red flags until I got there (for me, the other girls had a blast there).
