For some it may be muttar. CYLOR
For some, they may not have started observing the mourning portion of the Omer until today (Rosh Chodesh).

Where does it say in the entire Shulchan Aruch that you cannot shave?
It says you cannot take Haircuts!
In fact The Mekubal Harav Moshe Dovid Valla, a Talmud of the Ramchal claims that not shaving or trimming the beard during Aveilus, and Sefirah is a “goyishe minhag.”
See Shu”t Chasam Sofer (YD 348) who says that the Poiskem’s intention was only for the hair of the head and not the beard….

Whatever you can do on Chol Hamoad you can do during Safiras HoOmer BH O’CH 493

There are valid and acceptee heterim for different circumstances. Most importantly, it’s yimay sefirah. Don’t rush to judge another Jew.

It’s not a one to one relationship. If it’s mutar to shave during Chol Hamoed, then the same circumstance would be mutar to shave during sefira. However, there’s a lot more room to be meikel with sefira than with Chol Hamoed. People get heterim to shave for work during sefirah, which they would not get during chol hamoed.

I thought Sphardim shaved during sefira? I know Rav Ovadia was matir shaving during the 3 weeks, so I might be confusing the two.

NC actually the heter for shaving for work during sefira is the same heter as shaving for work during ch”m. Sefardim hold the aveilus starts on ch”m.

Shaving for a man is prohibited by the majority of poskim. The only absolute hetter to shave is for women!

RG, don’t make a general statement. If you off the OP, the Mishna says that these can shave Chol Hamoad, so we see that normally we can shave. The Chasam Sofer O’CH 159, whom I follow, says that there is nothing wrong normally to shave.

Absolutely not. Shaving during CH”M is much more machmir. Mainstream opinion is that work appearance is not actually enough to justify it for chol hamoed. People just seem to confuse it with sefira unfortunately. It has nothing to do with aveilus during chol hamoed. Those who keep second sefira also can’t shave then.

Also, sphardim aren’t the only ones who keep first sefira. Nearly every normal person in America does. And, yes, I know you can find Ashkenazi sources that say second is better, but it just hasn’t caught on in reality.

laskern – do you follow ALL the psokim of Chasam Sofer, or only the ones that help your lifestyle? One can always find a shitah that allows something or a shitah that prohibits something. Do you pick and choose whom to follow?

Very general statement. The heter to shave for work places in either case is specifically to ones particular circumstance. There are those who need to be clean shaven, at work.
