    what about port?

    Port casks are rarely used for scotch, they provide too much flavor.

    I don’t remember any scotch that said port pipes, but Bushmills 16 Irish whiskey is aged in Port pipes.

    R’Moshe was Matir it. Although it could be he said its better to be Machmir, check with your L.O.R.

    Rabbi Rosen at the star-k is an expert on all things alcoholic- Contact the star-k or whatever hashgacha you normally rely on for the answer

    Ha, I just learned this 🙂

    So basically it’s completely muttar (I don’t know which Rishonim say this). It might be because wine can be 1/6 (that’s why blended scotch is ok) and also something about the flavor, I think.

    If so,why all the commotion concerning the sherry casks? Also, this could be why the London Bais Din is matir all Scotches.

    Ya Rav Moshe says blended scotch is okay because of 1/6 (like batal beshishim just batel beshes)but not everyone agrees with him so ask your LOR.

    Even though R’ Moshe is mattir, he writes that he only drank it not to be “mechzi k’yuharo”. In other words, even according to R’ Moshe, it’s preferable to stay away from it. He encourages schnapps with a hechsher.

    Thanks Hello99 for the backup. Yes, it was a large back and forth with R’ Teitz. R’ Teitz didn’t allow it and therefore R’ Moshe said that the community in which he is the Rov should not drink it. The whole back and forth was in a magazine some time back.

    If you are really interested in all the details, you can try to track down some of R’ Teitz’s children or Talmidim and they will prob help you to find where it is.

    Or simply look up the Teshuva.

    I don’t really know what the sheilah is and I haven’t seen the teshuvos, but according to the gemara in A.Z. (33b) it comes out that one may leave beer (and ?????? whiskey would be the same according to all the rishonim and perhaps even better ?”?) in a cask that previously held wine of a goy, and the mechaber (Y.D. 137:4) is mattir with all drinks.
