Where can one get a good deal for a shtreimel? And what kind of shtreimels are available?

What do you mean by a good deal?

    A good Shtreimel is expensive.

    Shtreimel’s, Spodik’s, Kolpik’s usually run between $1,000 and $5,000.

What are the hats Chasidim wear on weekdays called? Satmar’s are called Beaver Hats, but the others have something else I believe.

Beaver hats mean its from a beaver (used to be, now days its from a rabbit) A satmar hat is called a “flacha (flat) beaver hit” while the other ones (Bobov/viznits e.t.c.) is called a “hoiche (tall) beaver hit.

If your in israel you could go to someone called shemtov, he makes beautiful shtriemels for his top range ones he charges $3500 it’s made of canadian fur he makes a really nice crown going round the top and puts in streaks of white hair and makes it really light, my friends held mine and said it weighs lighter than their hats, in israel it might be expensive cos the average shtriemel macher charges about $1500 for their stuff, the end of the day you come out with a piece of a shtriemel, even my friends who hardly know the difference between shtriemel’s said to me ‘WOW i’ve never seen such a piece’.

    Just curious…

$2,000-$3,000 is a LOT of money. How long does a streimel last?

    #1045424

Should last about 8 – 10 yrs and requires no upkeep as in the wash n’ sets that the $2,000 wig costs each month.. U just have to take good care of it. My husband is easygoing with his hat, the kids play Totty with it etc. But with his streimel he is careful to put in the box as soon as he takes it off…

Yes Tuna Beigel- Shem Tov has the nicest ones.

AinOhd- most Chassanim is my circles buy one for $3500 and many also buy a second one for $1500 which they wear in bad weather!

The expensive ones should last at least 10 years. But they do get maintenance every so often. It needs to be rebrushed and glued down professionally.

    #1045426

I got a $1500 dollar one as well for the rain, he made it nearly as nice as my nice one, i could go to my chuppa with my rain one and people would think it’s my good one. (unless they already saw my nice one)

    Tunabeigel- that’s true.

My husbad has a $1500 one and it’s really gorgeous. I don’t see why he needed to spend $3500 on the other one, altough when comparing, it really does look so much richer.

smartcookie, ask teh men they will be able to explain it to you. To me most streimlech look the same, but just like there is a science behind a sheitel, there is one behind the streimel.

Often a chosson gets his first one paid for by the ‘shver’ and his mother pays for the sheitel for his wife!

I have been to a streimel fabrik in Jerusalm (in my professional capacity- being a very straight laced litvak) and I saw on the workbench the raw material ermine (sable?) tails pinned up on a rack. The were flat black with a bright white tail tip. I asked the operator about this and he said yes, they dye the white, and for brown tones, they bleach. I asked if they could do all white, and he said yes, they could, but there is no market. I asked even rebbishe for YT? Not even rebbishe. Some people just have no sense of style.

AinOhd- the $3500 aren’t too loud. They’re very fine but beautiful. In perfect accordance with Tznius.

A chusen shtriemel will be more exp. then a M’chuten shtriemel (not a big difrence in style but you know a chusen will come back many times for tuch ups while the shver is hopefully busy enough not to “drei a kup”.

Is it more of a mitzvah to wear a $3500 one?

No, the mitzvah is the same to wear any hat Bnei Torah wear, regardless of the price.

Can shtreimelach be cleaned or restored? Can the fabric in the middle be replaced? Where would you send it?

The kitzur says, ”one should not wear expensive clothing, nor cheap clothing, and one should sell the beams of his roof so that he has shoes to wear”.

He says nothing about exorbitantly expensive head-gear. in fact we could derive that a $3500 dollar head-piece should be against halacha.

If only people knew the hilig zachen a shtrimel has, they would invest 20000 dollars and more for one, a shietel is just a head covering

Synthetic shtreimels are available nowadays for much lower prices than those discussed above, and they are not opposed by gedolim (as far as I know).

    wehave…:

I don’t think halacha includes a maximum amount one

may spend on one’s wardrobe or any item in it. Generally,

fancy clothing is spoken about in the context of middos.

(Also, the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch is not the last word in halocho.)

    barlev:

Ah, yes, it’s a shame the heilige zachen had to wait

until so recently for us to take advantage of them.

You would think Moshe Rabbenu… oh, right! 🙂

Actually, does anyone know when Yerushalmim started wearing them?

forget the shtreimel, buy your wife a mink jacket instead

There’s no minhag of wearing a mink jacket.

“If only people knew the hilig zachen a shtrimel has, they would invest 20000 dollars and more for one”

    — In what mesechta is a shtrimel mentioned?

“a shietel is just a head covering”

    — a lady’s head covering is mandated by the Torah. Depending on your posek, a sheitel works for that covering.

As the Mesilat Yesharim explains, clothing is a function of Gaavah. A shtrimel is part of that. On the other hand, a lady’s hair cover is (or at least should be) tsniut. If you want to wear a shtrimel, that’s fine, but don’t confuse your gaavah with real ruchniut.

“There’s no minhag of wearing a mink jacket.”

True, but as the Gemara in Yevamot 62b (coming up soon in the Daf Yomi) says, a man is supposed to show love and respect to his wife. This could be one way of doing so.

MDG: For you to suggest that the Gedolei Yisroel, such as Rav Eliashev, Rav S.Z. Auerbach, the Gerrer Rebbe, etc. (as well as their adherents following their instructions and/or minhagim) who sported a shtreimel are doing so due to gaaiva, is egregious.

I’m sorry that my comment was not clear enough. I was really addressing barlev who mentioned shtrimels as “hilig zachen” worth $20,000+. To me, those words sound like an excuse to indulge. Gedolim know how to use the physical world for mitsvot. For some of us, it’s the opposite. Can you find me a quote like “hilig zachen” from any of the Gedolim talking about their shtrimels?

Shtreimels are an unnecessary expense and that animals used are sometimes skinned alive.

    #1045467

No animal is ever killed exclusively for shtreimels the shtreimel maker uses only the tails which have no use other then for shtreimels as for expense a shtreimel lasts about 12 years coming out to about 250$ for a $3000 shtreimel so not so bad

“No animal is ever killed exclusively for shtreimels…”

“The shtreimel is typically custom-made for the intended wearer, of genuine fur, from the tips of the tails typically of Canadian or Russian sable, stone marten, baum marten (Pine Marten), or American gray fox.” (from wikipedia)

No, I don’t think anyone is having sable, marten, or fox burgers. Those animals are killed exclusively for their fur.

monroeyidd, you can change your user name, but you’re still just as (un)educated.

On Shtreimels I am educated the fur yes there killed for there fur but the tails which are what shtreimels are made of have no use other then for shtreimels
