    I can’t even begin to calculate how much money I’ve wasted on cholov yisroel milk that was spoiled as soon as the seal was opened, even weeks before the expiration date. This includes not just the milk but bowls of cereal, cups of coffee, etc. thrown out because the milk was bad. Isn’t there more we should be doing as a community to be “me’areir” against the companies making these sub-industry standard products? Thousands of people would observe cholov yisroel chumros if normal quality control procedures were adhered to!

    You need to move to New York. That should mostly eliminate this problem.

    Chevra. I live in NYC. I stopped buying chalav yisroel milk for the same reason. Yes, its a lot better than 10 years ago, but compared to the chalav stam companies. Its bad. It may not be the companies only though. It could be the handling all the way through. Did the store refrigerate it right away? Is the fridge at proper temperature. I have a bigger beef with the chalav yisrael companies. If ever there was a community that would buy gallon sized bottes of milk it is the chalav yisrael drinking community with the large, k’eh, families. Yet there is not a single C’Y company in the NYC area that offers it.

    The quality of the milk sometimes depends on the store. I buy the same brand all the time but from two different stores, one store is always good, the other store only sometimes.

    Just switch to Chalav Stam, it lasts in the fridge for weeks

    recently, i found the milk has gotten much better. lasts longer. but we always have a rule- smell before you pour!

    The cholov stam milks often are “Ultra Pasteurized”, which gives it a shelf life of 6 – 8 weeks, as opposed to regular pasteurized of about 10 days.

    Some stores leave the milk outside for a while before putting it into the fridge.

    I only get Pride of the Farm (Star K). I have never had a problem with it. Go figure – I am in the tri-state area and I would assume it’s coming from Baltimore.

    boysmom is absolutely correct. Anyone who doubts this should make a trip to 16th Avenue, especially in the summer. It is a disgrace to see cases of milk sitting in the sun outside heimishe stores.

    Many years ago when I was in yeshiva, and chalav Yisroel was relatively uncommon, we were told that you could drink plain old Grade A homogenized and pasteurized milk. Now, such milk is available with an OU or a Kaf-K. Nevertheless, if you are makpid on Chalav Yisroel that does not give anyone the right to take advantage of you. Buy it from Fairway or some other store where they understand the concept of refrigeration.

    Excuse me Kaveh but don’t you return rotten spoiled milk? Erev shabbos for example, I got my milk order and all 4 of the yogurt containers were SOUR. I just picked up the phone and told the driver to kindly pick them up and replace them with good yogurt. He said he’ll be back tommorrow.

    Not that I am annoyed. However, its written that if one was to put his hand into his pocket to fetch a particular item or coin and pulled out the wrong item, and has to retry to fetch from the pocket what he orginally wanted, its a kaparah. Any annoyance or seemingly trivial waste of time or money has a purpose. Its a message.

    But the point is not that I am annoyed, which I am. THe point is that they cannot sell you garbage. YOu have to do your hishtaldus to correct the situation and call them on it, return THAT MILK! GEt your money back.

    Since I don’t drink milk at all, I guess the lack of schar that I get for buying milk which spoils early will forever elude me. Another indication that I am going to hell in the proverbial handbasket. 🙁

    I find Golden Flow milk to be great. Hardly have a problem with them.

    And Wolf, I’m starting to suspect that you’re playing Mosherose’s other side….

    The homogenized milk is garbage anyway and has no benefits at all. It is probably harmful if anything. There is Cholov Yisrael milk that is straight from the cow (not pasteurized or homogenized) that comes from Monsey straight to your house or apartment door. It costs $5 for 1/2 gallon but is definitely worth it. You can also get a few half gallons and freeze the milk. My son has been drinking it since he was a year old. It tastes delicious and has many health benefits. the number to call is 845-425-4559 (Mr, Frankel? I think)

    In Eretz Yisroel i don’t think I ever opened a spoiled milk. Not just that, the milk lasts.

    I also never had a problem with pride of the farm (STAR-K) milk however 1 day after I open golden flow milk it is spoiled.

    yiddishemishpacha – perhaps you should check your facts before posting. There can be great danger in drinking unpasteurized milk – which is why all commercially available milk must go through this process. The cows’ udders are not sanitized before milking and the machines are used from cow to cow without cleaning in between – so bacteria is spread. Also, where are your facts from concerning processed milk being harmful? Post your sources.

    Kosher milk from a kosher animal is kosher. Period. You want to think your neshama is better than someone else’s because a Jew owned the cow? Fine. There is far greater spiritual benefit to not robbing someone of his hard-earned money by selling him spoiled milk.

    Helpful: R Moshe Feinstein said that all cow’s milk in the US is considered Cholov Yisrael, so there’s no extra benefit to drinking the one that says it on the bottle.

    pride of the farm is the only way to go- it never goes bad, i have been buying it for a few years now and i have never had a problem with it. i dont like the taste of any other milk anymore.

    Yes, it is true that one reason for spoiled milk is poor or lack of refrigeration. Just to be fair and not name names,one major Cholov Yisroel milk company,the longest one around, recently invested in improving their product which will help keep fresher longer. In interviewing the people they explained the process used by their company which is done in Canada the past ten years. Try it and you’ll see for yourself. The other companies which may be a bit cheaper are of a poorer quality of processing and being they are smaller they do their production by a different company. When using a different company, production has to be of a certain amount so they may just be processing once a week as opposed to the other company that processes on an almost daily basis. What is important is to check the dates. Yes, dates because today the milk companies must show two dates.

    Just curious, i see Pride of The Farm being mentioned a few times in this blog. Are they trying to get into N.Y. to join the others here?

    We just stick to the oldest company around and in all my 40+ years of B”H running the household i think the most we had a container of spoiled milk was twice.

    Exactly the opposite! You will get infinite Schar for being Machmir like Rav Schacter who holds all cows are Safek Traifos currently and does not drink milk.

    We usually try to get pride of the farm, but living in an out of town place there’s not always pride of the farm milk available! we found that it lasts the longest.

    I guess they are doing everyone a favor by not packaging CY milk in gallon sized bottles. You wont be as frustrated if only half a gallon at a time spoils 🙂

    I keep cholov yisrael in a situation that is not always easy. I freeze quarts of milk (they don’t explode becasue they’re made of plastic) and defrost them in the refrigerator. It has lasted as long as I needed it to, although I ahven’t tried it for more than 2 weeks.

    Never had a problem with Golden Flow. Also, the groceries usually put the older milk in the front, so I always check if there is milk with a later date, in the back. Most of the times I find.

    On the contrary… because I’m not doing it lishmah. I’m not staying away from milk because I’m concerned about terifos… I’m doing it for my own selfish, petty reasons.

    In fact, one can argue that I’m insulting HKBH (so to speak) by saying (metaphorically) that His milk isn’t good enough for me. For that, certainly, I’m not earning any points in Heaven.

    Recently, Golden Flow has improved on the milk spoiling. They have been advertising and guaranteeing that the milk will not spoil so quickly as it use too. Since, the improvement, I have noticed it is better and now buy only Golden Flow.

    Pride of the Farm doesn’t seem to be sold in Brooklyn. I have only seen it in New Jersey. Can anyone answer why that is so or at least let me know where in Brooklyn can I find Pride of the Farm??

    he said cholov stam in the us was mutar, not that milk in the us is cholov yisroel (and many Poskim hold his Psak was limited only to certain circumstances existing at the time he made the Psak, many hold it still applies))

    As has been mentioned POF is a Maryland company they probably dont come down to NY.

    Golden Flow is the best of the cholov Yisroel companies.

    Just because R’ Moshe was matir all milk doesnt mean you dont get more schar.

    oilom k’mihogo noheig. Ah the memories. I worked a lifetime ago as a teen as the shclepper in a Chassidic grocery in the Catskills. Skin and bones as I was, I hauled 40 cases a day of milk (yes that brand) from the sidewalk to the walk in refrige, and then out to the customers. It was trucked from Mountaindale (far away) and left on the sidewalk at some time before I got there at 7:00, and the only place in the store not 90 degrees was the walk in. The distributor guaranteed the milk, but he wanted the spoiled stuff back. So people brought back marginally spoiled milk, and we stored it OUTSIDE THE COOLER for the return trip to the distributer. I could have had a masters in cheesemaking had I been paying closer attention, but I was working too hard, including defending my self esteem. I was called Yankel by the boss though I had a real name, and when his daughter at the register had to address me, it was “you”. Language and cultural barriers of great height. Seriously, milk at 60F begins to degrade, and the damage is cumulative (mitztaref) So if it sits a bit on the way into the truck, and them some on the way out, and then some on the was to the cold case, its freshness time is shortened. And you need 90f to make cheese.

    there is no difference in how long they last

    both last for weeks

    i think the c’y brand is usually lamners farm

    but it is the same with all brands weve tried

    And, there is growing acknowledgement the MILK and COOKIES are BAD for you. Milk, because metabolizes to an acid, because there more than recognized allergy to some of the proteins, and because the calcium in milk is way less body accessible than calcium in say, yum yum spinach. Cookies are getting bad press because of the sugar and trans fats. So enjoy your spinach and fat free low cal cookies.

    To ease Wolfs angst, regarding metaphorically, so to speakingly insult Hashem by abstaining from milk, perhaps we are not meant to drink bovine milk, and the eretz zavat chalov udvash refers to goat milk, which incidentally metabolizes alkaline.

    Perceptions and shalom bais aside, milk with any hashgacha is the same in kashrus; be it Yankel, or the OU, or the ChafK, or the StarK, or the USDA.
