for those of you who know history south Korea was originally under martial law when separated from north Korea and it seems to constantly want to return to that state. every year the movement to more authoritarian government has grown, even though currently the govt. is “left wing”, that is in name only.

case and point they don’t have any free speech protections and are constantly adding new restrictions to speech. today (July/7/2026) the fake news act takes effect which will criminalize news proven to be fake or damaging (already before, speaking against the state in south Korea is an offence punishable by jail time) and award up to 5 times the damage done to the affected party.

and the united states says south Korea is democratic. not only is this not true at present, but the south korean nation dosent seem to want this for itself in the future either. and if you research the topic of south Korean laws and some of its recent history its clear without a doubt.

    And?

    Who didn’t know this?

Who ever thought South Korea is a democratic country? Literally every leader of theirs has been impeached and imprisoned by the next….

Yeah, but it’s a benevolent dictatorship.

Actually, it’s more of a corrupt democracy.

Many countries don’t have freedom of speech, and nearly no country has the level of freedom of speech as the USA.

I’m not sure what the point of this discussion is.

Democracy Index 2024: south korea is 22 out of 170 countries. Still beats the alternative (North korea).

People in Seoul wake up in the morning, turn to look a North Korean border and say: she lo asani Tzafoni
