Oriental Jews (Eidot haMizrach) are from countries like Iraq and Iran. Sepharadim/Sephardim (they are alternate spellings) are descendants of Jews who were expelled from Spain (Sepharad). Unlike the former, who spoke Judeo-Arabic, Judeo-Persian, etc. the latter spoke Ladino, which was alternately called Sephardit (my grandmother who was from Turkey called it Spanish and could converse with Hispanics in it).

Avi K, although that might be true in the most general sense, there are Jews whose ancestors come from Spain but who also spoke Arabic. Can you time of who this may be?

“Oriental Jews (Eidot haMizrach) are from countries like Iraq and Iran. Sepharadim/Sephardim (they are alternate spellings) are descendants of Jews who were expelled from Spain (Sepharad).”

I hate to make any part of this thread serious, but this differentiation is mostly mythical. Even you count your Turkish grandmother as Sphardi, not Mizrachi. You’re just picking an choosing. A lot of the Persian community were also previously Spanish.

And, by the way, surf boards are definitely frummer than ironing boards. All true frum yiddin only own no-iron shirts and refuse to iron them even though they get wrinkly.
