Will the third Beis Hamikdash utilize modern-day technology, such as lighting, or will we revert back to the past? I would appreciate your thoughts and sources on this subject. Thank you.

    Why shouldn’t we?

I’m sure that as metal working technology improved, better knives and implements were used in the BHMK. I don’t think there was any requirement to go back to pre-Davidic metalsmithing to produce implements for the 2nd BHMK.

I think our biggest worry should be getting it built, everything else, I am sure will fall quickly into place with no problems.

Well, I think as far as lighting goes, the Bais Hamikdash won’t need lighting because it will have the intrinsic light of the shechina, which will light it up from within.

But in terms of general technology, I very much believe that it will all be used. I actually think that the primary purpose of all advancements in technology are for the times of Mashiach, and we will be able to use everything we have properly.

If the internet still exists, then there might be. We aren’t gonna go back to horse and chariots

In Maseches Tamid it says that a mechanism was built in the later years of the Beis Hamikdash in order to help with either draining or bringing in water (sorry its been a while since I last did chazara.) Chazal learn from there (again do not clearly remember) that technology that can assist Avodas Hashem is permissible if it really helps.

Hmmm. It will obviously still have all the keilim. But I imagine it will have modern lighting and heating. I think G-d knows how to make it.

Mammele: Why do you say that? According to the Rambam we certainly will. We don’t seem to hold like the Rambam in Inyanei Mashiach, but it’s still important to recognize his opinion. Also, I haven’t looked, but I do know that the concept of everyone being physically perfect after the Keitz is a Christian idea. I don’t know if it has a basis in Judaism.

We won’t need surveilance because it is always guarded. There might be a problem with having wiring in the walls being that they were so careful with the stones not being cut with metal.

As far as using inventions, even Hakadosh Baruch Hu uses inventions. The Merkava that yecheskel Hanavi saw used wheels which were invented by the Egyptions.

R’ Matisyahu said in a shmooze today in BMG that he thinks when mashiach will come the internet will be a heilige thing where all it is used for is accessing Torah and keeping in touch with rabbanim.

There will be a database for yuchasin.Assignments (terumat hadeshin, etc.) will be computerized so as to avoid machloket.Hakravot hakorbanot will be broadcast world-wide on the Internet. There will be shiurim by Mashiach and the Levi’im, also on the Net.

Perhaps because by then the advance of medical knowledge will have made such a thing possible.

Sam2, according to the Rambam it will still be a natural world, but not like today. He does describe it as everything being Mutzlach. Nevua will be back. When a person is sick he will be able to ask a Navi what brought it on and how to get rid of the sickness. A Navi performs miracles, too. The Shechina will rest among Klal Yisroel more than it ever did. All the Brachos of Kol Hamachla Asher Samti Bimitzraim Lo Asim Alecha and many others will be fulfilled. That doesn’t mean the undoing of the natural world.

The split second that Kiddush haChodesh is declared by the Av Bes Din {Mekudosh} it will instantly be flashed on every website accross the world, & there will be absolutely no more Yom Tov Sheni anywhere in the world, with exception of Rosh haShono, when internet cannot be used to announce Chdesh Tishri.

Baissusim & hackers will both be out of business.

Sam – There are a few Midrashim to that effect. For example, Bereishis Rabbah 20:5: “????? ???? ??? ???????”, and ibid 95:1: “?? ?? ????? ???”? ????? ??? ???? ????? ????”. If you want to fit this in with the Rambam I think that Wolf’s approach is the best way to go. (One could also split hairs and say that these Midrashim are referring to the time of techiyas hameisim, and the Rambam l’sihtaso holds that techiyas hameisim is not necessarily going to be at the same time as the coming of mashiach.)

HaLeiVi: Not quite. It seems fairly clear from the Moreh that the Rambam thought that Nevua was possible even in his time. He Paskens like Shmuel. The only difference between this world and then will be Shib’ud Malchiyos Bilvad.

yitayningwut: ???”? would classify all of those midrashim as either mashal or as post-resurrection, which he holds is an event completely independent of Mashiach.

voldemort: Some people think that he implied it by certain statements in the Moreh but I am far from convinced.

Sam2, in his Iggeres Teiman he says that there is a Remez that Nevua will return at a date close to his time. It might be referring to the Baalei Ruach Hakodesh like the Ri Sagi Nahar.

Anyhow, Shibud Malchus is the main change. However, we know that Nevua will return and we know that the Shechina will return. Those come with many by-products. During the time of Eliyahu Hanavi and Elisha the Teva wasn’t different but there were Nisim. When someone lost a donkey he would ask a Navi, like Shaul did, where it went. Whatever I mentioned is normal and expected when the world is Kitikuno.

The rain being on time and the extra Hatzlacha are just like it was in the Midbar or under any Melech Yarei Shamayim. That is Shmuel’s Shita.

will there be trains, cars and airoplanes after mashiach comes? probably. Why should the Internet be any different? Like someoen mentioned on another post, without the Internet most of the world would stop working nowadays. It’s not what you it does, it’s what you do with it, like Reb Matisyahu said

    ItcheSrulik –

I know, and I agree. But the fact that the Rambam would explain it away to fit in with his understanding does not mean that that is the only “Jewish” explanation. So in response to Sam, there is indeed a source for the concept.

Voldemort – It’s an unfounded conspiracy theory. Rambam writes in his introduction to the third part of the Guide:

“To give a full explanation of the mystic passages of the Bible is contrary to the Law and to reason; besides, my knowledge of them is based on reasoning, not on divine inspiration [and is therefore not infallible]. I have not received my belief in this respect from any teacher, but it has been formed by what I learnt from Scripture and the utterances of our Sages, and by the philosophical principles which I have adopted.”

    Emphasis mine.

Doesn’t it say that the Yetzer Hora will be abolished when Moshiach comes? Internet can therefore stay without a need for anything.

And i don’t actually understand the Rambam – doesn’t the Midrash say that pig is called Chazir because ‘Sheosid Lehachziro’ – it is destined to be returned? There are dozens of midrashim that tell of the time when Moshiach comes, and none of them sound like our world! Like the Goyim will be serving us, Snakes will get feet back and be our business managers, that Lions and lambs will live together in peace and harmony… no lack of prophecies!

Besides for that, there are many Rishonim who argue with the Rambam.

yitayningwut: Gotcha. I was responding to you as if you asked on the Rambam, which you didn’t

yekke2: If you rephrase your question and separate the gemaras from the pesukim it will be easier to answer.

Please note that that I was asking specifically about the Beis Hamikdash. For example, we do see that they made an improvement to the Kiyor so that it doesn’t get posul B’Linah, using an advanced contraption to lower the Kiyor overnight into a pool of water. So, I imagine that available technology will be utilized within the Beis Hamikdush, but was looking for views and sources on this subject. Thanks.

Leider: I would say you have historical precedent. Bayit sheni had the muchni. It also had mikvaos with pumps, which were not yet invented in Bayis Rishon. They also used iron knives which were not common in Mishkan Shilo. Both archeology and the gemara showed they used arches, which were not used in Sh’lomo’s time. I would guess that we — by which I mean all of us here with our own hands — will use whatever we can to build it l’kavod ul’tifares.

    yekke2 –

There are two things to consider.

    1) The Rambam’s shita isn’t uniquely his – it is simply a machlokes in the Gemara and he is “paskening” like Shmuel. So no Midrash can really be a kashya, because Shmuel can disagree with it (????? ??”? that the Rambam himself cannot, which is not entirely a valid argument itself).

    2) All of the things you cited can easily be interpreted allegorically, or in ways similar to Wolf’s mehalech above. For example:

Yetzer hara being abolished: Since knowledge of the truth will be so clear, people pashut won’t have any yetzer hara to do what’s wrong.

Pig being kosher: Scientists will figure out how to genetically alter the pig so that it chews its cud. (See Ohr Hachayim in Shemini by the four animals, where he brings down this Midrash.)

Lions and lambs living together: An allegory to the lions and lambs of the world. Meaning that people will stop fighting with each other.

Why would we need lighting if there was a big beautiful stone window that sent light outside from within? Wouldn’t we just use that stone again? I learned (if I’m not mistaken) that the curve of the window brought the Shechina’s light outside the Bais HaMikdash to the rest of the world. There was so much light inside the Bais HaMikdash already!

If a kohain has a shayla about the avoda, will he post it in the CR?

Will there be no need for mods?

I assume that a lot of technology will be used. The accounting system for the minchas, etc will all be computerized. The Beis Din HaGadol will use the Internet and Bar Ilan-type software on their ipads for quick reference.

Not to mention you’ll be able to watch the birkas kohanim over the internet. Oh wait… you already can. Free flights for olah regel.

Cholov Yisroel/ kosher cruises will bring the first fruits to Eretz Yisroel. Straight from the airport will be a train to the beis hamikdash. You can pre-order your karbon pesach online, via Facebook and other groups. Yeshiva World will take pictures of the menorah lighting from their helicopter view which would be broadcast live all over the world. You can skype with your rabbonim- which many do already. They will implant a chip inside of you to count you. No more half a shekels.

There will probably be central heating instead of a large fire for kohanim to warm themselves.

Webcams to watch the avoda sounds nice too. Though it won’t replace actually being there in person.

Webcam shall be used in conjunction with Kiddush haChodesh, and as soon as the Av Beis Din declares “Mekudosh” & the assembled respond “Mekudosh Mekudosh”, within a second the entire world will know which day is Rosh Chodesh, and the entire need for Yom Tov Sheni shall be obsolete, except for Rosh haShono.

Depending on whether one lays Tefillin on Chol haMoed or not, this shall give 3 or 5 extra opportunities each year, to fulfill the huge Mitzwo of laying Tefillin. …….. Then again, Eliyohu haNovi may clear up this issue once & for all, as to whether Tefillin should be worn on Chol haMoed, or not.

M42: Because he wore the B’gadim the whole time he was in the Mikdash, not just when he was doing the Avodah (this is only the Kohen Gadol). While doing the Avodah he (or any Kohen) wouldn’t wear T’fillin because it would be a Chatzitza, if I recall correctly.

    #1015985

you recall incorrectly. tefillin was worn all day. it was not merube begadim because tefillin is not a beged.
