How about Kol Nidrei Night and Motzei Yom Kippur

I suspect this may be a widely-known riddle, but you never know. I learned it in Hebrew School:

Who are the three cowboys whose names appear in Adon Olam?

Which one is better- a truck load full of nickels or a half a truck load full of dimes?

If a tree falls and there are no people around, is there a sound yes or no? Explain your reasoning

Any responses to the above 2 riddles? (i know the answer to both but i don’t want to spoil the fun…)

    #1069495

the dimes becaause they are smaller thus more of them

    whats the other riddle?

not the tree in the forest?

that has no answer, it depends on how you define “sound”

    #1069496

    ditto! (on the dimes one)

the second one is a little confusing but i think its no, maybe agent can explain it (but your on the right track)

    Thank you!

    #1069497

dont want to sound gayvadik but i am well aquainted with that “riddle” and it does not have a solution. the answer simply depends on how you define “sound”

either as a physical vibrational movement of air

or as a perception by a sentient being.

    #1069498

But how can you define sound as a physical vibration? That maybe can cause sound but its not “sound” exactly, no (in my humble opinon:)

    #1069499

define it any way you want, (although physics would define it as a vibration in a physical media, air in this case).

if you define it such then yes it makes a sound.

if you define it as perception then no it doesnt make a sound.

it is a riddle that is neither profound nor meaningful.

    it merely depends on definition

Ok ok ill just stick to dimes and nickels, i knew not to post the sound one- let agent take the heat for it! lol

    #1069501

In order for there to be a sound you have to have a person to hear it-because of sound waves….

    #1069502

so, agent, you are defining sound as the aural perception by a sentient creature of vibrating physical media, or something like that, correct?

    #1069503
    agent

    something like that I think!!

    mod 80:

although physics would define it as a vibration in a physical media firstly it’s a medium or physical media not a media (plural)

and secondly yep it’s a longitudinal wave vibrating at a certain frequency [physics GCSE]

    #1069505

    agent

if thats how you define sound then of course if no person is there (or other sentient being) then there is no sound, and there is no riddle!

    #1069506

thank you blueprints for the correction.

writing quickly causes many interesting phenomena 😉

    #1069507

and to correct you blueprints sound does not have to have a specific frequency, as opposed to specific subsets of sound such as a pure note

    heres a riddle,

when its a certain day of the week it’s a mitzvah to do this,

but when that certain day of the week falls out on a certain day of the month it becomes assur (or a chumra depends how you hold) but if that certain day of the week falls out on a certain day of the month in a certain time of the year it becomes muttar (according to R Moshe)

    good luck

nope, theres no mitzvah to say tachnun (some chassidim actually do not, and an amoras (or tanna cant remember) wife actually tried stopping him from it b/c it would kill another amora (or tanna) so wouldn’t happen if it was a mitzvah

    Awww cmon!

on erev shabbos its a mitzvah to get a haircut,

when erev shabbos falls out on rosh chodesh R yehuda Hachassid says shouldnt get a haircut (some hold of it some say its a chumra) and when Rosh Chodesh falls out on erev shabbos during sfira then r moshe says even those that hold like R yehuda hachassid say its muttar

In a village, the barber shaves everyone who does not shave himself, but no one else.

    Who shaves the barber?

    #1069521

The town has just one barber and he is male; and every man in the town keeps himself clean-shaven: some by shaving themselves, some by attending the barber.

Define “shave themselves” please. – The simple meaning.

    1. See above. Some shave themselves, some by attending the barber.

    2. No. There is only one barber in town, as mentioned above.
