Has anyone heard of the Roman Artichokes

Basically the Roman jewish community is one of the oldest in the world and they have a fried artichoke dish that is world famous (Even the goyim are told to go to the kosher restaurants and eat them)

The Chief Rabbinate of Israel has declared them non-kosher because of the bugs and the Chief Rabbi of Rome has stated this is an old dish and they have a mesorah about the Kashruth of the Artichokes (meaning about the bugs). The Main kosher restaurant(s) in Milan have pulled the dish, but not the ones in Rome

Im not sure who the Kashruth in MIlan is but I dont think its under the Roman Jewish authority

We ate the artichokes at a restaurant in the old ghetto area of Rome that has a good hashgacha. They are delicious (lightly fried in olive oil).

What a shame that aside from the strict kashrus we keep we can’t even eat vegetables anymore. Especially the best tasting ones.

Not sure how, if in fact bugs are present, one could have amesorah on eating bugs. We’re not talking chagavim here. The mesorah is on the dish/recipe, not on a bug-eating heter.

The Roman Rabbinate has said that the artichokes grown in Italy have a different stem size than the ones grown in Israel and therefore do not get the same bug infestation

I asked a rav and he said that checking artichokes is so difficult that he does without. Ask your LOR. The OU does not allow artichoke hearts in restaurants it certifies due to this. Apparently the leaves are less difficult although they must be checked.

The Chief Rabbi of Rome has said they have always checked for the bugs

Hey Joe…..they actually had some choclate covered bugs on the desert menu but we took a raincheck…..the cesar salad special (with imported Romaine from Yuma, AZ) was delicious .

On a serious note, go on to google and pull up photos of regular artichokes and Roman artichokes and you will readily see the physical difference that makes the latter more easily cleaned and checked by the mashgichim for the little buggers..

from all this we see why it is important to have a LOCAL competent rav- since the conditions may be very different from place to place, especially when it comes to environment-dependent things like bug infestations. I can’t resist but to say…when in Rome, do like the Romans.

Agree with Winnie…it takes a Roman Mashgiach to Neutralize A Roman Bug on a Roman Artichoke

If Roman lettuce has bugs, why wouldn’t Roman artichokes?

Winnie; “When in Rome…” is a quintessential goyishe hashkafa. A Yid is a Yid wherever he/she may be.

    “What about minhag hamokom”?

There are yidden in places whose minhagim are quite different and questionable then those of our parent and grandparents in the Alte heim….we don’t always adopt minhag hamoakom on certain matters where the local minhagim would have us doing really wierd stuff.

This is all a silly misunderstanding, because of a spelling error. The correct spelling is “Roamin’ Artichokes,” which is the name of a band that spun off from Travelling Wilburys.

You won’t find a Yid in Italy, or the Sfard lands.
That’s your Eastern European bias showing through.
A Jew born, raised and living in Rome is a Jew and a Roman, despite your opinion.
The reason why so many Italian Jews survived WW2 is because Italian Catholics considered Italian Jews to be fellow Italians who happened to be Jewish. That’s why Italians went out their way to protect them. Out of a prewar population of 46,000 only 10000 were deported, and thst happened after 1943 when the Germans took over.

Lesschumras; A Yehudi is a Yehudi! There, are you happy now? Or will you say I’m biased against the Aseres Hashvatim and should say Israelites?! By the way I bet my Edot Hamizrah havarah impersonation could pass for the real thing! 😏
Those Romans, are they the same ones who destroyed the Bais Hamikdash? Nice of them to save the Jews or as you would say the Romans who “happened” to be Jews!
