I have a question – Why are the democrats against it?

Is it because the country can’t afford it? Or is it – that they want an agreement on their radical agenda, eg. 70-80% tax hike on the richest people in the US? Or they think that Trump will be blamed for the Shutdown & Not them (this will have an effect on the next general election)?

    Since Trump wants it…

Votes. Power. Saw a report this week on one of the outlets that DACA people living across this land flipped some districts from red to blue giving Dems more Reps.

The human Democrats think it’s too expensive; the lizard Democrats only care about their political agenda. I personally think that Mexico should build a wall on their side of the border, and the U.S. should just leave it alone, because Mexico has a history of being invaded by the U.S.

    DACA people can’t legally vote.

    Because it’s stupid.

The cost / benefit ratio is off the charts astronomical cost for negligible to no gain. Use the money instead to fund measures that have a proven track record of efficacy. No reasonable person would suggest an open house, free for all style of border security and enforcement. Building a wall as a lasting monument and reminder to one man’s overweening ego and hubris is not the way one’s own legacy should go down in history.

Start with what works and use the five billion bucks for further future investment and improvement. Be someone who can feel true pride for real achievement when looking back at your legacy. Be someone who embodied true leadership. Be a person. A real person. And that goes for both sides of the aisle. #BeBest

Daca can’t vote but their relatives can, and they’ve impacted districts in CA, Fla, Tx. This info is out and you can find it easily.. In many cases they’ve voted illegally anyway . With a full pardon they’ll vote, and when hordes come in via Mexico, they too will eventually be pardoned by the ruling Dems who hope they’ll vote Dem.

In s speech given in 2009 (I believe), Senator Shumer boasted of a 360 mile barrier constructed as part of comprehensive border control to prevent illegal immigration.

He didn’t think it was money wasted then…

As lowertuition11210 says, it’s an anti Trump thing. That’s all. The Democrats have all flipflopped on this, and frankly, they look really silly.

See for example, John Binder’s comprehensive aricle on Breitbart, Jan. 4, titled ” Daca illegal aliens surged Hispanic vote, flipping GOP counties blue”.. For some reason I have trouble posting the link itself.

You can’t expect Democratic politicians to represent the people. Democrat voters are lesser-of-two-evils voters who believe that the Republican party is pure evil. You can see this in the way they attack Green Party voters, and also in the way the Democratic primaries never really have much variety in the candidates running.

Fortunately there were sufficient sane, reasonable minded Republicans around to slap stupid talk of a wall out of Senator Schumer’s vocabulary in 2009. Would that they demonstrate the same level of fiscal responsibility and common sense in 2019 with a sulking President not interested in the grown up business of running the country.

Regardless of the year or who’s spouting off about the necessity of ” a wall”, it’s a bad idea. There are better ways to spend five billion dollars that will achieve greater benefits for all Americans than to fling money around like it’s as easy as digging it out of the sofa cushions on a bottomless pit of a project with negligible to no benefit.

Re: project with negligible to no benefit.
Benefit would be saving billions of $$$ in hospital care, schools, taxing our finite resources, $$$$$ combatting crime, by illegal aliens. This is a nation of laws, we have borders. Come here LEGALLY..LEGALLY.. The Dems are deluxe hypocrites, they know the truth but don’t care because they’re in power, live in ivory towers , some physically, others intellectually, and have utter contempt for the American working people, considering them stupid, racist, peons .. Slobbering deplorables… Build the blasted wall…!!!

    Mariana,
Why are you convinced that a wall won’t work?
As trump mentioned, it seems to work in Israel, it works around people’s homes,
And you know where I think we all agree it works? Around prisons.
Why do most prisons, except perhaps those that are on islands, have walls around them? (some minimum security also don’t but that’s because the threat of being put into tougher security prisons is usually enough)
    Probably because they work.
You know what doesn’t work? Gun control. This country spends billions on gun control, while guns for criminals are easily available. Know how?
Cause they come in through the porous southern border.
So how’s about we just switch. Drop gun control (I don’t mean totally) and build the wall.
    Probably save money and lives.

I don’t support the wall, especially now since the presidents numbers on crimes by immigrants, illegal drug flow into the US ports conflicts with those of American agencies. If he has different sources than ICE, Customs, the FBI etc he should really state where he got those numbers. There has been no true analysis of why this money is best spent on a wall rather than tracking down the large numbers of people who have overstayed visas, or providing the USCG with more funds to combat smuggling of humans and narcotics. Frankly I find it absurd that the president now wants the US citizens to fund a campaign promise he failed at and is now denying he ever made. A comprehensive solution to illegal entry also needs to address the plight of the dreamers. I also think a wall doesn’t address solving labor issues on this side of the border. We need a new humane edition of the old bracero program to ensure there is labor sufficient to pick our crops, clean our swimming pools, hang our drywall and clean our houses. (Limited for the sake of brevity.)

Just a few reasons why I don’t support the wall. In no way is this post meant to be persuasive just MHO as to why I as an independent am against it.

Do we really need the wall? I don’t know, but something has to be done about illegal immigration, do you want to have to produce proof of citizenship whenever you are stopped. In most states you don’t even have to show photo id to vote. Or place armed soldiers at the border with orders to shoot to kill I don’t think otherwise you can stop it. The president wants the wall and in order for the federal government to operate he must sign the bill, so unless you want gridlock for the next two years some type of wall must be authorized. Remember comes October 2019 there is a new fiscal year with a new budget and a new fight for more funding for wall.

That’s Not why we need a wall! YWN brought the News video on Trump in Texas. It’s not just the wall, it’s better laws, equipment, etc. They have proven in areas where there is Now a wall, that Illegal activity has dropped 90-95%!
This country has to stop playing politics just to benefit one left-wing party.

If you want to require photo ID to vote, create a new program that gives a free ID to every citizen.

Reb Yod 23 you do realize that in order to get on a plane or even go through the Democratic convention you need photo ID. So how do you recommend that we get rid of illegal aliens if you don’t want to build a wall.

Abba_S, I don’t think I ever said anything in support of requiring photo ID for anything. And I don’t think “getting rid” of illegal aliens should be a priority, but the easiest way is to simplify the path toward legal immigration.

Perhaps its because of the FACTS that a physical barrier would take tens of billions of dollars and nearly a decade to build across those portions of the border where a wall is even feasible leaving hundreds of miles open to illegal crossings to those who wish to go around the barrier. It doesn’t even address the hundreds of thousands who fly into the U.S. and overstay their visas and simply blend into the population. Any serious terrorist will simply change flights at Heathrow and fly into Toronto and walk across 2300 miles of unfenced Canadian border. Other than that, its a great idea.i

    1. It is ridiculously expensive and that money can be put to far better use
    2. It is very unlikely to do anything to effectively stop the flow of illegal immigrants

Here is A Houston-based structural engineer’S assessment on the wisdom of erecting the 1,954 mile barrier proposed by Donald Trump .
    – the project would run up against a variety of problems, including landowner challenges, potential ecological damage, and higher flash-flooding risks.
    – constant maintenance requirements and unexpected glitches would obliterate original cost estimates
    – the effectiveness of the wall is in no way guaranteed. “I could, right now, purchase a 32 foot extension ladder and weld a cheap custom saddle for the top of the proposed wall so that I can get over it,” she writes.
And, she adds, the wall could be easily breached by next-generation drones that could pick up and lift people soon—let alone by the time the project is completed.
    – the prototypes they came up with either do not do the job ( how long does it take to drill a hole in these walls or dig a tunnel underneath ?) or are impossible to build.

How can Trump shut down the government over this ?
Open the government and have a discussion with congress on money for the wall.

    So what’s the Democrats’ solution?
No immigration laws? No Drug laws? No women & child abuse laws?
Man the border with Border Control agents every few feet; at a total cost of Billions of Dollars?
Keep your head in the Sand; like all Libs!

For those who liken Trump’s wall to Israel’s because Israel’s wall “works,” fuhgeddaboudit. First, Israel’s wall is not a wall for most of its length, and in some parts it hasn’t been built at all. Even along the Gaza Strip, it’s basically a fence. Second, Israel has extensive freedom of action on the other side of its wall, as America doesn’t. Third, Israel’s wall does not keep out tens of thousands (I’m being conservative) of Arabs who do DDD jobs in Israel. There are multiple ways of avoiding it.

Most undocumented aliens (and virtually all terrorist suspects) arrive by airplane and overstay their visas. I think every foreigner who flies into the U.S. should wear a GPS ankle bracelet so the gummint can find them and throw them out when they overstay their visa.

@Health Narischkeit. Planned Parenthood and other places of its ilk is an absolute necessity in America where poor people have limited access to pregnancy and birth control education and care. No federal funds go towards abortions by law. The wall costs 5 billion, the amount in the Planned Parenthood federal budget was 500 million, or about 10% of what the wall would cost.

And I have no doubt that the wall can be effective in small areas, but that’s only because they have less secure areas they can cross into. If the wall would cover the entire border, I highly doubt you would see much difference. Better funding of US border patrol agencies and local PD along with more incentives for private companies to hire citizens and legal workers costs a lot less than five billion dollars and will go much further than a wall.

I still haven’t heard a coherent reason why the Trumkpopf is asking for tax dollars to pay for the wall that he promised 233 times during the campaign would be paid for by Mexico. His nareshkeit about the new trade deal yielding benefits that might arguably “pay” for the wall has been ridiculed by leading members of his own party. The Trumkopf should impose a tax on all Mexican restaurants to create a fund to pay for border security as he promised. Such a “Burrito Tax” would pay for the wall within 2 or 3 years and get him off the hook and allow the government to reopen.
