I was advised by counsel to initiate this thread. All weather related. Let’s start.

Meteorologists predict there will be lots of weather for the remainder of today. People who suffer from the weather are advised to use caution.

Whether or not I will be able to weather the weather depends on whether or not the weather is weatherable.

They are also predicting that tonight will be dark but will light up around early morning.

    #778805

well they are saying that based only on previous trends, i dont know if they have any advance data on that

    #778806

they are also predicting, based on previous trends, a wide variation in weather around the globe tomorrow

They predict that the darkness will come from the east to the west, and in some eastern parts of the globe its already getting dark.

The National Weather Service is advising people who suffer from DAS (Darkness Anexity Syndrom) should remain in lighted rooms during the night or be in a state of consiousness otherwise known as sleeping.

they say over the next two and a half/three months will be very warm (northern hemisphere). Anyone who doesn’t like the heat should head down south for the summer.

I have just noticed that as it is becoming darkish here, the sky is a little bit red. I believe that is a “sailor’s delight”.

I heard that there are supposed to be many strong, violent thunderstorms thoughout the night and into tomorrow. I think anyone who doesn’t ‘have’ to go out, shouldn’t.

    “Will school be cancelled tomorrow?”

They were about to cancel school, but by the time morning came around there was no sign of darkness anymore (I guess the mayor did a great job this time) so all the kids arived in school realy disapointed.

tomorrow’s weather: possibly sunny, perhaps a bit cloudy, a chance of thunderstorms, and for all we know, it may just snow tomorrow! we have as good a guess as the weathermen because only Ha-Shem knows for sure what tomorrow may bring!

A team of scientists sat all night in an emergency meeting trying to work out where the sun had disappeared to. Eventually it dawned on them.

Well, I just checked the Weather Channel. There is a picture of the sun with raindrops beside it. So………..it will be sunny with a chance of rain OR rainy with a chance of sun. Now, I feel that I know as much as I did prior to checking the TV. Do I wear shorts and carry a large umbrella or do I wear a rain slicker and carry a parasol? As if there weren’t enough decisions to make every day without having the National Meteorology Service interfering. Zees: I am not so sure this was a good idea – just gives me more to consider before leaving the house. Of course, I could just stay in bed all day and not have to worry about what to wear. Now, that is a plan.

I just plan for weather. Whatever it may be, I’m ready. I turn on the news and hear there’s going to be weather, so I prepare for it.

    minyan gal,

Well, I just checked the Weather Channel. There is a picture of the sun with raindrops beside it. So………..it will be sunny with a chance of rain OR rainy with a chance of sun.

Precipitation forecasts are probabilistic due to uncertainty. Behind that sun with raindrops (understandably confusing – not the National Weather Service’s fault, though, rather the Weather Channel’s) is a forecast that might read something like:

Today: Partly cloudy with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. High in the upper 80s.

What this forecast means is that at any given location in the forecast area, there is a 4 in 10 chance of getting rain, and the possibility of this rain will start around 3pm. It’s not as satisfying as a simple yes or no to the “will it rain” question, but when dealing with summer time convective patterns, some areas will get rained on while others do not, so this is the best forecast possible.

These forecasts can still be used for decision making. For example, I usually carry a small umbrella in my bag on weekdays. If the rain chances are 50% or more, I might consider bringing a larger umbrella that I have to carry by hand, or a poncho that takes up space in my bag. If the rain chances are 80% or above, perhaps I’d drive instead of walking, or reschedule outdoor plans, etc.

I definitely recommend reading the text portion of the forecasts… you get much more information than from the cartoon sun and clouds.

nope! just that you can’t really plan! one day they predict rain and it’s sunny. the next day they say we’ll see sunshine and it’s storming! so good luck with your planning!

Actually, I have been thinking that being a meteorologist would be a great profession. One of the few jobs you could have that being wrong won’t cause you to lose your job. I wonder if managers even have to do annual performance appraisals (or whatever they call them nowadays). What can they say to their employees – “you were right too often so we will have to let you go.” Hmmm, perhaps I should consider returning to school. I would only be about 70 when I graduate.

Actually, any forecast can be quantitatively verified, so managers can indeed see who is skillful and who is not.

The problem is, meteorologists issue probabilistic forecasts (50% chance of rain) that the public interprets as deterministic (it WILL rain), so when it doesn’t rain, the meteorologist is “wrong.” Better communication of forecast data to the public is a big concern of meteorologists.

Given the Alabama tornadoes a while back as an example, meteorologists in Norman, OK, indicated a risk for a severe weather/tornado outbreak 5 days in advance. The day of the outbreak, they issued a “high risk” outlook for violent tornadoes, and issued “Particularly Dangerous Situation” tornado watches. When the tornadoes developed, I think there was an average of more than 20 minutes of warning before the storms arrived. I’d say that was a pretty good forecasting job.

I’ll admit though, I am biased.

Most time the meteorologist just passes the info he gets, kind like your local reporter will pass on to you an AP report.

    Just curious.

Where do meteorologists go when there’s no weather? They can’t go to the beach, it needs calm WEATHER.
