I will be visiting Washington DC this week. Does anyone know if the Washington Metro system is safe for a solo female traveler? How does it compare with the NYC subway?

Generally yes, would be safe for solo women, but depends on the line and neighborhood. Blue, yellow, orange, and silver lines are mainly in safe areas, though it can get worse once you get to the east of US Capitol. Red & green are somewhat worse, so be more alert on those, especially in the northern parts of the city.
It’s smaller than the NYC subway since Washington is much smaller, and also goes outside the city to suburbs in MD & VA. Also much cleaner and likely safer than equivalent neighborhoods’ subways in NYC.

The Metro is safer and cleaner than New York’s subways. Their website has excellent maps of the system including the suburbs and bus routes. Note that most kosher restaurants are not especially close to the tourist areas. The local Vaad (Rabbinical Council of Greater Washington) has a good online list of restaurants with web links. Most Jewish life is in the adjacent suburban areas (especially Montgomery County which includes Silver Spring and Rockville).

Keep a mean expression on your face, and make erratic gestures as if you’re a little insane. Practice in front of a mirror. No one will bother you.

A female shouldn’t be going solo.
