Whats the truth about Touro? Do they have competent teachers and professors and are their degrees respected among employers? As a single frum girl who’s parents don’t want her to go to a coed college there are not many options but it really gets me nervous that I am really severely compromising on my education. So whats the real deal – Id like to hear from someone whos in it.

Part of this depends on what you are trying to do with your degree.

Whatever the drawbacks (if there are any), it is still significantly less than the drawback of putting your neshama at risk by going to a coed university.

It depends on your career track. Touro actually has a decent reputation among employers because a lot of very smart people go there. However, the school itself does not provide a real, high-quality, college education. If you’re going for a career which requires further studying/testing after graduation, be aware that Touro will no help you develop proper study habits, and there’s a good chance you will struggle down the road.

imho, some professors are competent while others are not. My economics class was a complete waste of time and money-prof. taught next to nothing, and some of what he did teach was factually inaccurate, like capital being money (it is not in economics). Many professors claim they are underpaid, which probably explains why the college does not attract many competent teachers. As stated previously, the level of education is not very high. I personally had a negative experience with the administration, and some of the staff members are very nasty and hard to deal with-some girls literally come out in tears.

some pros: frum environment, supportive student advisors, and good student body

as for the college’s reputation among employers, it depends what field you’re seeking to enter. I am an accounting major, and from what I understand, Touro has a solid reputation in that field.

My husband and his friends had a LOT of trouble finding good jobs after college. My husband had grey grades, is a very very hard worker but Touro for whatever reason does not have the best rep when trying to get certain jobs. I do not know about all fields but atleast when it comes to accou ring and finance we found this to be true.

A plus side however was that he was able to learn in yeshiva during the morning, work during the day and go to school at night.

musicaldignity – It definitely depends on which Touro school and on which career path. This is one issue.

There is also another issue of a Frum single girl going to coed

college. I can definitely see this as a problem.

IMHO, if it’s possible to get a career without going to coed college -then this is definitely preferable. I’m not a Poisek, but in this situation going to a coed college, even a different Touro one, you would possibly be Oiver two things – 1. mingling, 2. Not listening to your parents.

im a guy currently in Touro and regret it.

    1. 7,200 a semester isnt normal(compared to 2500 for brooklyn college)

    2. most professors arent competent and do not know how to teach

    3. the Deans do nothing to accommodate your sced and always brush you away by telling you to stay another semester.

it also depends what field you are looking into. i hear alot of good things about their accounting department(im a science major)

I graduated 15 years ago.. (additionally, I took classes at other non jewish-affiliated (gasp! co-ed) schools, so I can speak from both ends of the spectrum) Here’s my take:

You can get as much out of Touro as you are willing to put in. If you want to just slide through you can, whereas if you take it seriously one can get a quality education.

I myself was going in to a family business so job placement was not an issue. I do know from others that the school itself will not be very helpful in job placement. Touro has an excellent reputation for accounting and graduates often find jobs at top firms. Pre-law graduates also seem to place very well. I know that the programs for social work, PT, OT, etc. seem to be popular but I do not know much about them.

    Good luck.

chill with it -“im a guy currently in Touro and regret it.

If going to another college will affect your Ruchneyus -who cares how much they charge?

“it also depends what field you are looking into. i hear alot of good things about their accounting department(im a science major)”

As far as Science is concerned, if you go into one of their Health science programs -these are much better academically wise than just a plain AAS or BS in general science.

They have PA programs and a few Med schools. People go to the basic courses there so it should give them an “in” to their final degree programs.

The same idea that people go to YU in order to get into Albert Einstein grad school.

Due to the fact that someones future both ruchnius and gashmius is at stake over here, i need to clear a few things up.

First of all, what i am saying is regards to the boys program.i dont know how much applies to the girls but the professors are the same for both girls and boys.

Unfortunately, many of the students are coming from yeshivas who have not learned english subjects in many years and even what they learnt in yeshiva high school wasnt that great. The professors know this and it is very frustrating to try to teach at a college level for people so behind. Additionally, many studetns have the mentality, “give me my A so i can get my degree and get the heck out!” Many do not want to work for the grades.

That being said, as in every college some professors are better then others, however, and ive heard this over and over, many of the professors that are known as the hardest meanest professors are the ones i learnt the most by. I wont lie, their classes were murderously hard but i worked my tail off and learnt a lot from those professors.

As far as money is concerned, i work at an entry level position and barley get financial aid and i have a family and kids, I bh have ZERO college debt. I feel if your doing the right thing the money comes.

“3. the Deans do nothing to accommodate your sced and always brush you away by telling you to stay another semester.”

That is 100% lies. It may not be as easy sending an email to the dean and next thing you know there is a new class for you, BUT if you are persistent and you make a valid argument, they will bend for you. Trust me, ive done it. a few times.

I am also in the health sciences and will be more then happy to go into as much details as you need

One more point, if you believe all the things you wrote and I’m assuming you’re not lying when you say -“im a guy currently in Touro”, – why are you still there?

It’s not a prison, as soon as the semester is over -you should be going to another school. Touro will send the transcripts to them providing that you kept the terms of enrollment.

I’m not sure about touro’s PA or other med programs but I do know that touro’s nursing program is co-ed. I also know when I applied over 2 years go, the nursing program was 7500 per semester, no matter the credits and the program was 5 semesters long. even my private nursing school didn’t cost that much. i’m sure now their price went up from what it was

touro is definitely not the cheapest way to go but they do have separate campuses or separate times IIRC in manhatten

Thanks for the information. I am thinking towards a career as a graphic/web designer so I will probably do something along the lines of computer science for design or programming. I dont know anyone who has went to touro on that track so I have absolutely no clue if they are at all competent in that area.

Another thing, If I dont do Touro – for that profession choice – is there any other option? Accounting and special ed there are other non co ed options but for computer science etc I dont know of any.

    Thank you for your help

There are tons of Frum non-mixed schools who teach this, but you don’t get a degree usually, just a certificate.

musicaldignity, have you considered an online program? There are many online schooling options, especially in graphic/ web design, that offer degrees. Wishing you success in your choice.
