Someone I know is looking for a strong, long-lasting, well-priced vacuum cleaner. What do you use and what do you recommend?

I honestly think you’re best off buying a cheaper vacuum cleaner and replacing it every few years. I think companies like Dyson and Kirby are huge rip offs. Good Luck.

Buy a Riccar. It may cost you a bit but it pulls dirt like you’ve never seen. It’s guaranteed from bumper to bumper for 5 years and it runs great. I have it for 10 years and it’s running strong.

not cheap but worth it: Dyson. the one with the ball base is excellent. First one lasted 8 or so years. replaced it with a lighter model which is now 2 years old. newer models are so much easier to use than the old model. Definitely worth the 500$

Eclipse: Did you use it? How long did it last? Which kind do you have?

Outsider: Thanks. Do you have experience with the different brands? Replacing them every 2-3 years sounds like a real headache.

Yatzmich: Thanks for the recommendation. How often do you use it?

Yentingyenta: Thank you! How often do you use it?

approx 4-6 rooms plus stairs at least once per week. depends on the week really. sometimes we use it once that week, sometimes its out 6 times. It also works on wood floors so we use it all over the house when its out of the closet.

oh and it def has the best wand and hose attachments

I bought a refurbished Electrolux (from before the name was bought by a different company) and it’s been very reliable.

I’m from Ohio, so I feel a sort of special allegiance to Hoover!

While I can’t say that I use them vigorously, I’ve never had to replace a vacuum more often than once every 6-8 years.

I did have a bad experience with a black and decker handheld vacuum though. It never worked very well.

This was the best vacuum I ever bought:

Hoover Platinum Lightweight Upright Vacuum with Canister, Bagged, UH30010COM

I got it before Pesach and it has been wonderful. It was $246 from Amazon.com. It is an upright, but also comes with a shoulder-held mini-vacuum which is perfect for stairs & cars. Both the upright and the mini-vac have long cords, so you don’t have to unplug going from room to room.

This was my 4th vacuum after 25+ years of marriage. The first was a Kenmore canister – worked great for 15 years, so when it died I got a new Kenmore canister for $350. It broke twice in three years, costing $75 to fix it each time. Then I got a cheap one at Target. It lasted 2 yers but wasn;t the best.

    I hope this is helpful!

I’ve had kenmore cannisters for over 20 years and I’ve been very happy with them. I am on my third. The second was working fine but i had to get rid of it because of something that got in it. The one I have now is 11+ yrs old and still works fine ba”h.
