Ladies, please take a quick minute to read this and hopefully save yourself a bit of aggravation that can easily be avoided.

We had a beautiful family simcha yesterday which ended with a slight uproar when one of my sisters noticed toward the end of the meal that her coat pocket was empty. Money gone. She told  my siblings quietly who then went to check their pockets and to their surprise it was empty too. Not just theirs but every single guest that had $ in their pocket left the simcha with empty pockets.

Turns out that there’s a girl (sadly a yiddesha) with a sickness of stealing. She goes every single night to halls in Williamsburg and empties coat pockets in the coat room. Management in halls know about it and Many people know about her too. But none of my family members knew about it, and therefore they all lost a fair amount of $.

Please do not leave a single dollar bill in your coat pocket at ANY simcha hall in Williamsburg.

Also, please forward this to as many people as possible. If we had known about her, non of us would leave a bill in our coat pockets.

If she really needs the money, maybe you should leave a few dollars for her to take, with a note saying: nits gezunterheit oif gutte zachen

There are mental disorders that can cause this, regardless of the reason behind this alleged behavior its very sad.

Nice idea. However, the goniff that wants to steal but doesn’t actually take anything (because nothing was there to take) was not in violation of the issur to steal. By providing something, the generosity of the few dollars might be the issur of לפני עור לא תתן מכשול. I suspect a better option would be to have some means of surveillance, and to catch the thief. That way he/she could get the help they need, which is not the money (they might need that, too). but the therapy to learn to live a normal life.

Other than leaving one or two dollars in your coat pocket for convenience to tip the person in the coat room or the guy outside doing the valet parking (only at some of the Simcha halls I’ve been to), who in their right mind would leave money in their coat pockets?? Also sounds a bit weird that “everyone knows” who is the ganif (and her mental problems) but no one has taken any steps to intervene.

Several. One less expense for the already strapped baal simcha.

Even where there’s a coat room attendant, she usually leaves before the Mitzva tantz, so the room is unmanned from that point on.

(Mods: Please post as above – typo corrected.)

This story smells. They all leave money in coat pockets? Ever heard of a wallet? A purse? The hall knew but did nothing?

They’re at a wedding. Most will be dancing. They’re not carrying wallets or purses with them.

DY, with all due respect carrying a wallet in my pants pocket never interfered with dancing, no matter how energetic. And, what do they do when the temperature is in the 70s and 80s?

Even if your dancing, you don’t carry much cash beyond a few singles for tips. otherwise, keep a credit card in your pocket that you can have with you all the time.. Not rocket science.

Many ladies’ outfits don’t have pockets.

The clothing designers must be conspiring with the thieves.
