And what percentage became Marranos?

July 10, 2011 9:17 pm at 9:17 pm #784147metrodriverMemberPac / Man; Don’t throw that word “Marranos” around lightly, thinking it’s some kind of status symbol. It means nothing less than “Chazeirim”. The Spanish
s of the inquisition era heaped insult on top of injury. Not only did they torture and burn the Jews on the stake (Not to be mistaken with a similarly spelled word.) But they dehumanized them, to boot. Just like the nazis did. Except they weren’t as sophisticated.July 10, 2011 9:43 pm at 9:43 pm #784148msseekerMember50%, IIRC.
July 10, 2011 10:05 pm at 10:05 pm #784149Pac / ManMemberMS: 50% includes the richtiga converted as well as what I called marranos earlier (what is a better term for those that bowed to the cross and attended church without believing it in their heart?)

IIRC they were called Conversos. Or are they the people that converted back to Judaism?

Many such Jews got out of Spain and Portugal as soon as they could and in fact the Jewish community in America was founded by their descendents.
July 10, 2011 11:06 pm at 11:06 pm #784155Pac / ManMemberIt should be noted that one is obligated to give their life rather than bow to the cross (even without believing it.) And in the Spanish case, the choice was expulsion, not execution.

Of course thats the halachah, but who are we to judge?
Are you so sure that you would pass that nisoiyon?
July 10, 2011 11:29 pm at 11:29 pm #784158bombmaniacParticipantconversos were the ones who actually DID convert…not those who practiced judaism in secret
