n order to log in one must go into a news article. Why is this?

There was an option to post anonymously without logging in for a brief period lasting a few weeks about two or three years ago.

You don’t keep secrets very well.
I suspect there are still some bugs being worked out on the new CR platform since I don’t see a link for new threads and the old threads aren’t being updated (unless everyone is still stuck in the Met Life parking lot getting home from the siyum).
