What are you going to do when we get up to Rosh Hashana, you’ll Chazzer it with Tosafos and Rishonim?

Wait, I thought (assumed for no reason whatsoever) that PBA at least does Tosfos with Daf Yomi.

Nope, actually I do just the gemara, not even with rashi unless I don’t understand any pashut pshat in the step. I know I’m missing out on plenty, but it’s still fun.

Do you have another Seder when you learn for real?

PBA: Doesn’t R’ Moshe say you can’t even make a Siyum for that?

Who said anything about making a siyum? (I takka made one on eruvin, but haven’t gotten around to it for pesachim or shekalim).

    Where does he say that?

    PBA: In a T’shuvah about Ta’anis Bechorim, I think.

Ok, we’re going to have to talk about Rashi a lot so that popa has to learn it to keep up with us. Then he can make a siyum. Maybe even Tosafos, so he’ll have to make a real seder.

    {ducks}

So just go upstairs and get it.

    I looked up the teshuvah.

As far as I can tell, it’s only a siyum on Chumash which requires that it was learned with Rashi.

DY: He doesn’t have a line in there that learning straight Gemara without any Peirush isn’t actually learning? I’ll try to find it when I have a chance, which might not be for a while.

Popa, the Yad Moshe has a blog (that I don’t read).

A Bochur once came to Reb Avraham Tropp (son of the Granatt) to be interviewed to join his Yeshiva. After saying a piece in the Gemara, Rav Tropp told the Bochur to say Rashi. The Bochur replied that he doesn’t do Rashi. In response, Rav Avraham chased him out of the Beis Medrash.

    Sam, DY,

I read the teshuva. It seems reasonable that the same standard should apply to gemara and torah–that is, I don’t see why you’d need a peirush to make a siyum on torah any more than on gemara.

But I don’t even think he is saying you need a peirush to make a siyum on torah. I read that he is saying that if you teaching according to a peirush, it has to be from a legitimate one and not from the ones that are ?????.

I think Torah shebichsav needs a pirush because without a pirush, it’s incomprehensible. With Torah sheba’al peh, if you understand pshat on a simple level, you do have something.

Daas, that reminds me of my Cheshbon during a lazy stint: You can’t learn Gemara without Rashi, so if I understood the Gemara I must have been Mechaven to Rashi.

i think they say torah shebiksav without havanah is torah but torah shebaal peh isnt. cud be r elchanan in maamarim

Sam and oyoyoy, yes, you get the mitzvah of Talmud Torah just by saying words of Torah shebichsav, mah she’ein kein TSB”P. I think that it does come out the opposite for a siyum, which, I see R’ Moshe holds, requires havana.

Without a legitimate pirush, there’s no legitimate havana in TSB”C. Try learning the parsha of tefillin or ayin tachas ayin without TSB”P. We need to learn it with a solid mesorah based pirush

In other words, Torah shebichsav needs Torah sheba’al peh. Gemara is already Torah sheba’al peh, and doesn’t inherently need a pirush.

I always took that to mean that if you read torah without having any idea what you are saying and what the words mean that it is learning, unlike gemara.

I don’t think that means havana besides what the words are saying though.

We need to understand the impact of a Kohen Gadol not being able to do the Avodah on Yom Kippur.

The similar situation nowadays (lehavdil, of course) is Peyton Manning coming down with a severe 24 hour “flu” this Sunday and his brother, Eli having to take over.

I don’t get mazel tov, because of you big fat jerks. You don’t get a mazel tov for finishing the first perek of rosh hashana plus the second through eighth of yoma.
