What does your name mean? (Bartz I mean you!)

One thing you’ve told us very straight

You would like to name her Fraidel Knaidel

Should she turn out spinny and tzudrayt

She will have to change to Fraidel Draydl.

There was once a goyish birth announcement in the local paper that said they were happy to announce the birth of the “latest addition to daddy’s liquor cabinet – another girl, Tia Maria, a sister to Brandy and Sherry”. How strange can some people be?

    What’s really weird is “wierd”

Yes ‘wierd’ really is weird because my english teacher always taught us that the rule is: I before E except after C. That’s why I sometimes misspell weird.

    Binyamin Wolf, Zev Wolfson.

I know someone with a last name that includes the word “gold.” They didn’t want to name their baby Golda Gold****** (I didn’t count the asterisks), so they named her Zehava instead.

I don’t want to get specific, but I know someone with a last name that is comprised of a first name and “off” (like in Kaganoff). The peron’s first name is the same as in his last name.

Someone once pointed out to me that many people with the name Gross are short, and many people with the name Klein (or a similar name) are tall. It’s true!!!

    emlf;

So what your saying is that many people named Scharf are not so sharp, so then many people named Weiss are kinda dark.

This makes me kinda wonder if many people named Reich are not so wealthy? Those named Schwartz, I understand, as well as Feffer

    and Zaltz.

But what really makes me nervous is what are most people named Kugel, or even scarier Whiteman? Black Women? I don’t know anymore.

There was a yid in town when I was a kid with the name….June December.

    I kid you not.

We wondered if there would be a May or April putting an appearance into that family structure.

The goyish neighborhood where my folks grew up there was a non jewish family and they were WEIRD. Each child was named after a kitchen utensil like spoon, fork, cup.

And whats really weird is that this was a couple who were from the older conservative generation and raising their kids in the 1960’s and 70’s, right?, so like (before the scene turned liberal in naming babies). I wonder what their kids named the next generation of their grandchildren. Maybe they went on to the bathroom items. Toilet, faucet?

Well I have a personal confession, I once wanted to name one of my kids amyetheyst or cloud or rainbow or morning star. But I am thankful that I didn’t. …oh ..and so is she!

I know a girl named Tuna Malkah – she got married to someone with the last name of Fish. I think she goes by Malkie for obvious reasons.

Some communities that use Simantov as a male name also use Mazaltov but as a female name.

Sometimes, the clerks who gave the famous four surnames of Gross, Klein, Weiss and Schwartz to Jews throughout the historical Austro-Hungarian Empire davka assigned them to people in a way that was mocking. This was just as much a way to attempt to solicit a bribe as it was anti-Semitism.
