A moderator mentioned there are 9 year old children in the Coffee Room. (I’m not sure if he meant readers or posters.) Poster “always here” expressed shock at this revelation and indicated she doesn’t want to be having conversations here with children that are her grand-children’s age.

Is it appropriate for young children to be reading YWN or the Coffee Room? Is it appropriate that they post?

Must adult posters and moderators insure all posts are children-appropriate?

What age requirements, if any, should exist for reading or posting?

    #774681

there are thousands of people who read the posts here every day. we have no control whatsoever as to who can access this site. we have no way to enforce age requirements for posting either.

we try to make sure that all posts are appropriate for all teenagers and adults. as for children it has to be left up to their parents to monitor what they read.

i am not stating any kind of official policy, only YW Editor can do that. i am just stating what i as a moderator try to accomplish, among other things.

Moderator meant posters. Hi everyone, Mommy lets me roam here freely!

    Did I post anything inappropriate?

Do you actually get multiple thousands of hits from unique IP addresses in the Coffee Room each day?

There’s no way of knowing the age of CR readers, but kind of like the “grandma rule” if its fit to be read in the CR (or using terms that are pareve enough to satisfy the mods) then I think if a child has internet access, they will be safe here.

No guarantees about what happens in other sites, but the CR is a safe haven.

My personal hunch? That other poster was just trolling or campaigning. That’s why he was sent packing.

since I can’t post in this in the thread which we are talking about (the one with the troll)

I wanted to tell the Editor,

From the original post it sounded like a “Joseph”

    #774686

no he was neither a joseph, nor the joseph

people are starting to see joseph everywhere

he is becoming a legend, or like elvis

    #774687

pretty soon we will return to the days of Mcarthyism.

there will be accusations and denunciations of being joseph

    the trials will begin

    blackballing will ensue

mod 80- can you talk to mod 42 so that you both make up stories that make sense and not ones that contradict each other.

    #774689

    what is the contradiction?

adorable: How old are you? I was wondering if you’re the 9 year old poster the mod referred to. (I hope you don’t mind my asking.)

I am so funcused by the last few posts!

But anyway, back to the topic at hand, if any of my kids were 9, i would not allow them to roam freely on the internet – not even on ywn. my youngest is 16 and they know how i feel about the internet in general – B”H they feel the same way. only appropriate websites are visited by our family.

but it is a good point that if whatever goes up on the cr is appropriate for teens and adults, it should be ok for younger ones too. after all, this is a frum website. there should be no allowances for anything inappropriate here.

then again, i feel like always, i wouldn’t want to be talking to a 9 yr. old here. however i do understand that there’s no way to control that.

BTW – WHAT IN THE WORLD IS “TROLLING”? i’m sure after being on the cr for this long, i should know that by now and this prob sounds like a dumb question.

I think that pacman/canine/joseph styles are quite easy to discern, IMO.

as far as young ones participating in the CR: yes, I was pretty shocked. (actually, my oldest grandchildren are 6 3/4 y.o., but 9 y.o. technically could be).

do you really think that YWN parents allow their young (under bas/bar mitzvah age) children to read, & possibly post, here in the CR?!

& no, I don’t think it’s appropriate for them to be here.

BTW – WHAT IN THE WORLD IS “TROLLING”?

It may have other meanings as well, but I use it to describe the action of posting with the sole intent of stirring up controversy. That, and posting topics that are sure to bring on loshon horah, nivul peh, ect.

I think it’s sad that theyre 9 year olds roaming this place. What has this world come to? That such young kids can freely roam the internet…how sad…

comes from a fishing term, trolling for fish

you put the bait in the water, lean back and wait for the fish to bite

ah, Mod 80, I wish I was trolling (for fish) right now!! *sigh*

    Moderator-80:

More specifically, you slowly drag the bait, as if it was a living thing (something sincere in the case of a forum) to fool the fish (posters).

The origin of the term, from “trolling” is why I, in my overly precise way, insist on calling such people “trollers” rather than “trolls” since the former is “one who trolls” and the latter is a mythical Norse beast who lives under a bridge.

But usage demands that “troll” is correct so I recognize the quixotic nature of my complaint.

YbAM~ yes, you are technically correct. (thanks for your post).

    #774705

    if precision is your forte

the norse mythical trolls were said to live in mountains and caves

the grimm brothers started the under the bridge thing

Goq: how do you know a post is immature until you’ve read it? See–this looked ok until now. Nyah, nyah! 🙂

Well, people are always talking about getting children to read and improving their writing skills, so really how can we complain when posting involves both?

Truthfully, though, we don’t let our kids use the computer, even though they would probably understand it much better than I do and they would write more coherently, too.

The Internet is open to the public, If the 9 year old kids are on the net without parents knowledge then they can be going anywhere, and this place would be safer then many many others. And if it is with parents knowledge, then obviously the parents let them read the posts.

So. You don’t want to talk to me? (Well at least Mommy taught me to capitalize the “i”, unless you’re doing it out of modesty.)

How did the mods know my age? I just turned 9 this week.

Mother in Israel: I think it says somewhere that you can’t become a mother under a certain age. My Mommy told me that. Thats how I knew she was older than twelve when I was born. (Besides, I know all the kids in my class, you don’t fit in)

So, some of you are 9? Ok, lets take a quick test:

Who is more popular, Hello Kitty or Hannah Bananna?

Who is Joseph? What has he done to become a legend in his own time? Is he a missionary, a political operative, malicious, or just a plain head case? What are the main characteristics of a “Joseph” post? Is he a relative of “Rufruf,” the only “canine” poster I can think of?

Please solve this mystery for me 🙂

He is no relative of RuffRuff. He’s somebody that made himself many usernames and aroused the editor’s ire.

I think it did lead to McCarthyism, quadragintinity, blockings, deletions, editings, and folklore.

I had commented in the past, when I felt a strong young-ish teen presence on board, that perhaps there should be a ‘cocoa room’ section of the CR.

Mod~ altho’ you said that anyone can read the posts, is there at least a minimum age for actually signing up/registering as a CR member? … TIA

    #774729

always here: “Mod~ altho’ you said that anyone can read the posts, is there at least a minimum age for actually signing up/registering as a CR member? … TIA”

    How could that be enforced?
