NYPD: Officers Shoot Knife-Wielding Man That Stabbed 2 Security Guards

New York City police officers have shot and killed a man at a Bronx home for the at-risk and homeless after authorities say he stabbed two female security guards who worked there.

Police say two officers were responding to a report of a stabbing at the home Monday night when they encountered the man in the lobby armed with a knife.

Police say both officers shot the suspect multiple times after he ignored repeated orders to drop the knife and stepped toward them. The unidentified man was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say video surveillance shows the suspect stabbing the two guards before the officers arrive on the scene. Both women were hospitalized in serious condition.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan gavw YWN the following statement:

Uniformed officers from the 48 Precinct responded to a radio-run of an assault-in-progress (person stabbed) at 1974 Hughes Avenue. Upon arrival, the officers encountered a man inside the lobby of the location armed with a knife. The officers proceeded to give verbal commands to drop the knife. The officers repeated these commands more than 20 times. The armed man did not comply, and instead stepped toward the officers with the knife displayed in his right hand. At that point, both officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect multiple times. The suspect was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he expired.

Upon reviewing the security camera footage from the lobby of 1974 Hughes Avenue, we determined the suspect our officers encountered had stabbed two female security guards at the location prior to the officers arrival. One female sustained a knife wound to her left arm, the other to her chest and arm. They were both transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital, where they are listed in serious condition.

Both officers involved in this incident were wearing body-worn cameras. This footage will be reviewed and included as part of the ongoing investigation.

  1. It is time for the government to ban dangerous assault knives. Noone needs a, what is in essense, a miniature sword in their home. The only people who should have knives are surgeons and licensed chefs. Other knives must be confiscated, before more people are murdered. When will our government leave the grasp of the knife lobby? Their failure to act makes them complicit in this murder!

  2. Grammar Alert: The knife did not stab two security guards. The knife-wielding man did. Therefore the headline should read:
“NYPD – Officers Shoot Knife-Wielding Man WHO (not that) Stabbed 2 Security Guards.” “That” would refer to the knife. “Who” refers to the knife-wielding man.

  3. @doom77- not debating that point, but as the picture above shows, the knife used in this attack is a kitchen knife, albeit a large one
